Setup hosting and new domain at hostgator, installed wp through fantastico. Inputed the two new name servers for the domain but kept getting that error msg saying opps google can't find my link... went back to hostgator and they said it can take 48 hours for the domain to propagate and can't build a site until then????

Yes it's normal for a domain to take up to 48 hours to propagate to new name servers. Usually it's faster though.

I've had some domains change over immediately while others have taken over 24 hours. Just keep checking it until it comes live again and then you'll be good to go.

    But yes, it is normal!

And it has nothing to do with WordPress! It is about domains, registrar, hosting and propagation of your name servers' info...

That's what they say but I've never had to weight more than 1 hour, ever, in over 30 hostgator domains.

Thats what I thought, I don't remember waiting that long in the past, it was usually almost immediate. Just sucked that I wanted to start working on this site quickly but have to wait....

The info has to propagate out to all of the other Domain Name Servers. Sometimes the delay has nothing to do w/ hostgator, but your local DNS. My local DNS provided by Charter Communications sucks. So I've changed my router's DNS to Google's public DNS. It picks up the changes much faster.

    Google Public DNS

You can also try a proxy site like Proxy Service - WebProxy to see if your site comes up there. If it does, then you know that your local DNS is just slow.

You can also add an entry for your domain in your computer's hosts file to point directly to your server ip. Computer's DNS supercedes all other dns and is immediate. Only works from the one computer. Useful trick for development work and for fooling your friends into thinking you hijacked twitter this is "true" local DNS, requires little more Work though. Maybe just wait hehe

Yeah, very normal. I have registered domains with different places and have found some to be almost immediate and others to take up to 24 hours.

I found that if I purchase a domain from my normal domain service, it's often 4-6 hours before my hosting package will 'see' it, and allow me to put up a site, but if I purchase from Namecheap (which I did for some of the recent coupons), I can put up a site instantly.

My hosting apparently sees DNS changes from Namecheap far quicker than from another domain service...
