If you are struggling, frustrated, about to give up, and need a PLAN, please read this

I've been around the IM scene for a while now (about 3 years), and I know what it feels like to be frustrated.

You're confused, unsure of which business model you're supposed to use, your brain is flooded with information overload, and you've got 10 WSO's on your computer that are gathering dust because you've (a) never followed through, or (b) felt like you were still missing vital info / instructions.

I'm willing to bet that you have gathered enough info to be making money ages ago, but you have failed to knuckle down, ORGANISE your info, generate a business plan of your own, and STICK TO IT.

Sorry, but you have only yourself to blame for that.

You have to come to the realization that in all likelihood, the main obstacle in your path is NOT information overload, or some missing information, or being sold short in all the products and magic buttons you bought. Most likely, the main obstacle between you and success, is you.

If nothing is happening for you, then you've got to change something. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results - or perhaps in your case, not doing something.

Don't feel threatened, nervous, intimidated or anxious about jumping in at the deep end, no matter how much you think you don't know. Start doing something, anything. You will learn along the way. Get a product to promote and start promoting it!

Try doing the following in order, and see how things change for you:

1. GET ORGANIZED

One of the biggest hindrances to productivity and success is a lack of organization. Chances are, if you've been trying this for a awhile, you have a ton of reports and ebooks sitting on your hard drive. Create folders on your desktop and organize and categorize every piece of information you have on your hard drive.

You can have a folder for all your traffic reports, a folder for all your niche research reports, a folder for your SEO reports etc. Have all of the reports and ebooks you've ever downloaded categorized and organized into relevant folders.

Now you can write your own report on the best tips you can find in each folder. For example, in your traffic folder, write a short report for yourself on the best traffic tips and strategies you got out of your traffic reports.

You will end up with a good report on each aspect of internet marketing by the time you're done. Now you have something which you will use for your own benefit, AND you have something you can sell!

2. SETTLE ON AN ACTION PLAN

There are plenty of different methods and action plans you can use. Just choose one, and make a DECISION right now to stick with that one until you make money.

An example of a basic outline of an action plan for affiliate marketing may look like this:

a) niche research and product selection
b) keyword research and competition analysis
c) create a blog / website
d) add content
e) drive traffic
f) test and improve conversions

3. COMPILE YOUR OWN BUSINESS / ACTION PLAN

Now you're going to use the action plan you've chosen in step 2 as your template, and around that core you're going to develop a business plan combining each of the reports you wrote in step 1.

Open up your favourite word processor and start writing down your action plan for each step of the process. Go into detail. The aim is not to write a NY Times best seller though - just use bullet points and do what works for you.

You're going to break each step down into smaller action plans. For example:

(a) niche research and product selection
Your Niche Research Report
- check Ebay Pulse for trends
- check Google trends
- check Clickbank and run through categories
- is it a problem / need? Is there a product to solve it?
- choose a product that is converting well

(b) keyword research and competition analysis
Your Keyword Research Report
- step 1
- step 2 etc

By the time you're done, you should have a complete and thorough, step by step plan to follow.

If you get stuck here or there, or find yourself short of information, don't forget the search function here on the WARRIOR FORUM. Pick any subject, I can almost guarantee a Warrior has posted about it on the forum.

Do yourself a favour and get into the WAR ROOM if you aren't already in there. That place is a goldmine.

4. PLAN YOUR TASKS

Again, organizing yourself will keep you focused and keep you taking action. I find it helps me to plan my days ahead. So, for example, take the business plan you've developed in step 3, and break it down into daily to-do lists.

For example, you could set aside an hour a day to do backlinking, 30 min every 2nd day to post on forums, an hour every 3rd day to write 3 articles, or whatever works for you and your time constraints. If you only have an hour a day, then plan your tasks in hourly sections.

Stick to your to-do lists and make sure you complete them.

5. FOLLOW THROUGH AND REPEAT

Now all that's left to do is to take action and do the work. You now know what you have to do, so what is your excuse?

Yes, you will make mistakes. But you can't learn from mistakes until you've made them. Don't let fear of failure hold you back from success.

Once you've got the ball rolling and you get into a habit of doing your daily tasks and build momentum, you will start to gain experience and begin learning what works and what doesn't work. You can always tweak your plan here and there as you move along.

Now as you read through this, I hope that a few light bulbs switched on and that you have the confidence to go out and start doing something. The most important ingredient to success is perseverance, so go for it and don't quit!

I like that you put a lot of emphasis on planning.

This is my secret weapon too and now I plan everything... I am convinced it is one of the main things that seperates me from failure... or at least when I started making plans, and action lists thats when I started getting a LOT more done and becoming successful. I have a master plan for months / a complete project, and then break this down into different areas - like a mini project within the project ticklist... and then I have a daily todo list which is made up from this too

    Planning, LOVE IT!

Very good post and should be a sticky. It is very hard to give this kind of info to people starting out. I read the same kind of advice years ago but still managed to spend a few years jumping from one idea to another. Maybe it is a process that you HAVE to go through, but I just wish I had taken note of advice like yours 4 years ago!!!

Great advice, Nick. The truth of the matter is that no matter how comprehensive the IM course or system is, there'll always be details that you feel are missing or incomplete.

The only way to truly learn is by doing it, because that is when you pick up the details and nuances that cannot be learned any other way except by implementing it.

Let's take a real-world example if this just sounds too much like "theory" to you. Do you think you could ever learn to truly ride a bicycle by reading about it? You could read a dozen books about the topic and watch countless videos, but you'll still never truly learn how to do it unless you get on the bicycle yourself.

You won't really know what the sensations of riding and balancing a bicycle are just from reading about it, and you won't know how to correct your balance and posture in order to keep it upright. Chances are very high you'll fall the first few times before you get the hang of riding a bicycle and get comfortable with it.

The bicycle riding analogy is so similar to what you'll experience in IM. You can only truly learn by doing things in IM, and you have to be prepared for failure the first few times you try something. If you learn from your mistakes and quickly apply what you've learned, you'll do well in IM and become very comfortable implementing things successfully.

That's actually a pretty good analogy Paul, thanks. Also, a lot of people can only learn things and understand things through practical application. Even in high schools, practical projects are used to teach things that might not be understood through in theory alone. IM is no different.

    Hey Nick

    Great post.

Don't let fear of failure hold you back from success.
I've often said on here that it's the people who can do this that are successful.

    Why?

Because there are no guarantees of success and many people can't get started because of that doubt and fear of failure. They're waiting for rock-solid confirmation that what they're about to embark on will be a success.

Sorry boys and girls, but it ain't like that.

Learn to live with the voice of little Doubting Thomas that's always at the back of your mind. When you can do that, the rest is just the practical steps.

Is it easy? No. Doable? Absolutely - look around you here.

    Cheers,

You're welcome guys. Now that you know what to do, all that's left is to go and do it. Make a conscious decision to stick exclusively to one plan until you're making money with it.

Good advice, and I can say from personal experience it works. When I finally started to make money I created a folder called "JUST DO IT" In that folder I put a few ebooks which put together made quite a nice little plan for me to start generating some income online.

        Hey Kevin,

Don't even stress too much about whether you have the right action plan. To get started, the only wrong action plan is no action plan.

Taking action (even if it is imperfect) is so critical in IM where information overload is the order of the day. The worst thing that could possibly happen is being paralyzed with indecision and fear (therefore doing nothing), and I still remember that feeling which came upon me in the beginning when I was just starting out in IM.

It was terrifying and frightening, and you really have to work hard to banish that fear, and of course one of the best ways of doing it is by taking action!

Kenny5's and Paul's advice to "just do it" is good advice.

Try to push forward every day, even if it's just a little bit so that you finish every day knowing that your project is further forward than it was at the start of the day.

    - when you're about to treat yourself to a coffee, do one more thing first.

    - when you're about to break for lunch, do a little more first.

    - when you're about to end for the day, do that one (easy) thing you put off earlier in the day.

These baby steps quickly add up.

This technique is something I use as well to "trick" myself into doing just a little more everyday. I set up little rewards/treats for myself throughout the day, contingent of course on completing a certain designated task/activity.

This treat/reward system works really well, because using the "carrot" approach (vs. the stick!) tends to easily motivate people - I'm far more energized and happy with what I'm doing when using this approach. I'm pretty sure that using positive conditioning such as I've described is far more effective in most cases than negative conditioning.

The problem for newbies is that the information overload, number of available paths, and the lure of buying "systems" (read: repackaged crap about wordpress and keyword research), means that a lot of new talent drowns as soon as it jumps in the pool.

So learn to swim before you jump in or invest in some water wings.

To clarify, I think that by "drowning" you mean giving up under the weight of information overload. And by "learning to swim before jumping in", I believe you mean overcoming the information overload by forming a plan.

Good advice. Jumping in and taking action without a plan, will in most instances lead to frustration, because one will tend to be drawn onto too many paths.

So the point is, take action - but set yourself a plan of action first so that you have something to keep you focussed. Something you can stick on the wall and make sure you follow it every day.

If it's easy, fast and cheap it probably doesn't work.

Thanks for sharing this, Nick. It must have escaped me earlier on, but I love how he's broken it down to where it can be easily outsourced, or done ourselves if we have the time to do so.

Hopefully it's clear to the newer people in here that there is really no great, big secret to driving masses of traffic to your site. All you really need is a relatively simple plan that is executed consistently over a period of a few weeks to get the ball rolling.

You should end up with a good report on each aspect of internet marketing by the time you're done.

Thank you very much, This will really help me get organized.
