What do you guys think...........?

Guys I trust your judgement in all things making money online! Now I have 2 Passions.....
1. is Internet Marketing and 2. is Birds and Birdwatching

I have recently set up a blog over at phillipsbirdbrain.com and am thinking about writing a ebook on the subject as have got some experience in writing eBooks (am currently writing my 3rd one on making money online).

Do you lot think its worth my time writing one and selling it on clickbank or would it just be a waste of my precious time?

Just interested in what your thoughts are!

I'm new to this IM thing, so may opinion may not count for much. But here is what I think. Obviously there is a niche out there for birdwatching, people do it and I don't see why people would not be interested in your book. Th eonly problem you may have is that since it is an eBook a majority of the information in your product may be available online for free. Do some research.

DO some keyword searches, see how popular this subject is.

Is there already a FREE content rich website people can access? How much traffic does this site get if there is one?

Would your book offer a value this website doesn't?

How do you plan on marketing your product to get it in front of bird watchers who go online? Banner space an sites such as Animal Planet, HGTV, your own sites, clickbank?

I think this would be a product for timing. I would think Spring and Sumemr are the most popular times for bird watching so starting now is giving you plenty of time to have your product up and running before the "rush".

Well bird watching is not a strong niche but it is highly targeted so you would have good conversions if you were to go for a bird related product.

Ok, take bird watching and tell me how you are going to solve their problems. What kind of problems they might have? Not able to see birds? You need to think how your ebook is going to help them.
True, some say that you should do something what you are passionate about, but if research shows me, that niche isn't profitable, then i'm not going to do it.

I did a quick research, very little adwords, forums dead, low members count. Can't see any common problems, mostly just pictures. And for that reason..it's 'no' for me.

Hmm yea I see your point! it would have to offer value and have a USP that most other bird related sites have not got!

The only reason I thought of it is that there are no Bird or nature inspired products on clickbank as yet so I think I may be in quite a strong position if I start the first one on the subject!

I am just worried though as am currently writing my 3rd eBook and am giving it away for FREE. I just think that with my style of writing would people be upset if after purchasing my book they wont think its worth the money! I suppose I could always give it away to a select few birders and ask them if it's worth any money and would they be happy buying it!

    Thanks Floridacash for your tips!

When in doubt ask yourself 3 questions...

    Is your market:
    Irrationally passionate about the topic?
    Easily reachable?
Willing to spend money on info about the topic?

And the third one shouldn't be "Ya I think they'll buy a $7 ebook"... you want to know (by finding examples of other people who do it) that they will drop $50 or $100 without second guessing it... that's where the irrationally passionate part comes in.

@Margo @Tom Hmm i see your points guys! i may just write one and give it away on my blog instead!

Afterall my other blog is on CB Products and making money online. I could just rely on making money off phillipsbirdbrain.com with adsence and the affiliate offers I already got on there!

Phillip, if you want to do an ebook on birding, why restrict your thinking to Clickbank?

My first thought would be to format the ebook for the Kindle and publish it on Amazon. You could take the same manuscript, reformat it, and publish a 'dead trees' version through CreateSpace.

Lower prices, but a much bigger market to reach than Clickbank.

Off-topic: Maybe it's an old Wombat bite, but the wording in your sig hits me a little strangely. As I read it, you have two ebooks that you wrote for free (as in never got paid). As opposed to having two ebooks you wrote that visitors can have for free...

Will put all my more serious stuff in the IM niche instead!

righ am going to change my sig file now!

It Is not about opinions when it comes to this type of question.

It is about research. If you want the right answer you need to go out there and research the market. You need to find if it is a buying market.

I would start by using a product called Market Samurai. It is a great tool to give you a very good idea of the type of market you're dealing with.

Now, also go in and start searching around Google and Amazon and see what they have for sale about birdwatching.

Also, notice to see if there is any other information marketing type e-books out there.

If there are already e-books being sold about the topic and your research leads you to believe that you can sell in that market then go for it.

But, it would be bad advice if anyone just came in here and gave their opinion on the market without first doing a lot of research to make sure that there is truly a buying market there.

    Talk soon,

    Shannon Herod

Piggy-backing on what Shannon posted, don't overlook tangential markets that may be interested in a low-cost (and it doesn't get much lower than free) birding book. There are many sports where birdwatching, while not the main objective, adds spice to the experience. Sports like:

        > Hiking
        > Camping
        > Fishing
        > Boating

        and so on...

PS - Nice change on the sig.

sometimes you have to be practical when it comes to niche situations. A good niche can be related right away and be solved in so many ways.

  • Don't underestimate the power of small hobbyist niches such as Bird Watching. It's far easier to become an authority in a small niche and if you get the traffic there are always ways to monetize off the.

    Hi Phillip,

Here is an alternative plan I think could work for you.

    1. Contact the bird watching magazines and ask about advertising rates and distribution. If they aren't too ridiculously priced (many aren't) then forget about Clickbank.
    2. Write your book, and because you are interested in the subject I would suspect it will be good.
    3. Publish it through Createspace and you will have a physical book for sale on Amazon.
    4. Place your advert in the bird watching magazine, making sure to include your product title and the words "Available on Amazon". You will get good search and buy traffic through Amazon, but alternatively you could give them a redirect URL.

Depending on the distribution and nature of the market, you could make a lot of money. Just as important is the fact that this burst of sales will push your bird watching book to the top of the Amazon search results.

    • Clickbank is not the only way to sell something
    • Ebooks are not the only type of book
    • SEO is not the only way to market something

Hope this helps and gives you some ideas.

    Cheers,
    Colin Palfrey

I just did a little search on bird watching niche, this was one of the forums I found on the subject: Bird Watching Forum - GardenWeb

If you notice, there are fresh postings from today, that means people are talking about it, sharing their knowledge and experiences. I say, go for it.

    Tyrus
Tyrus, I used to live in the Platte River Valley in central Nebraska. One of the big tourist attractions was the annual Sandhill Crane migration every spring. Due to a few unique characteristics, over 80% of the know population of these cranes stopped in the valley for a few weeks every spring on their way to the Canadian nesting grounds.

Birdwatchers accounted for millions of dollars in tourist revenue. People traveled from all over the world to look at these birds standing in a cornfield or sitting on a sand island in the middle of a shallow river. Once they got here, they'd pull out thousands of dollars worth of high-power binoculars, telescopes, cameras, etc. They also bought thousands of dollars worth of reference books, both before they arrived and after they got in. Local stores also sold decent quantities of bird-related artwork, audio recordings of the birds, videos, etc.

That's for one short event in one small location.

Here in Florida, birdwatching tours are quite popular, drawing people from serious birders to casual tourists seeking a nature experience.

Passionate birders spend money almost as freely as golfers or any other obsessed niche. The pool may be smaller, but the passion is definitely there.
