Marketing Startegy - Successful Start or Abysmal Attempt?

Article marketing is currently my main method of building back links. I am doing it manually and am posting on EZine, Hub Pages, Free Articles Directory, Helium and Suite 101. EZine seems to take forever to approve articles for new accounts. I still have my first article written there awaiting approval... today is the 4th day. I am hoping the article I wrote yesterday gets approved soon.

For those that are in the know. I would like some opinions on the traffic I have been able to drum up. I have used the following

  • Forum marketing Posting on related top ranked forums approx 10 posts
  • Article marketing, 3 Articles posted on 4 - 5 sites
  • Commenting on other related articles about 3 comments
  • Yahoo Answers Have provided 2 answers

The following are stats from October 29 (when site opened) - November 3rd 52 Visitors 31 Unique Visitors

Is this decent or abysmal? What else can I do to drum up additional traffic without a mailing list? Would I get significantly more traffic by using an auto article submitter in addition to my manual submission? Should I be doing 2X to 3X the amount of work I have done in the time period that I have?

I could really use a successful mentor

Thanks

Looks like you're on the right track with your strategies. Just keep repeating what you are doing over and over again.

Traffic wise, it depends on the potential of the niche you are targeting.

If the keyword you're targeting gets 300,000 exact searches per month, then you've got some work to do. If it only gets 100 exact searches per month, well then I'd say you've nailed it on the head.

Thanks. Yep, I plan on doing it over and over and over for the next 3 months, hoping to have more traffic after continually to repeat my actions. At times I will find myself reading or doing something unproductive. When I catch myself I remind myself "Only Action Will Get Results".

How do you look up how many searches a keyword gets per month? I am sure the niche I am after is searched VERY VERY heavily.

I think my site is SEO friendly, eventually once I ge more traffic through I may make the investment for SEO. Only thing about my site is that its a content site that is monetized. None of the products are my own so I am not too sure about throwing a whole lot of money advertising on a site that only makes money from CJ, Clickbank and Google. Maybe I need some direction here. I would think that this paying for ad space would be much better ROI if you were selling your own product.

Use google keyword tool. It will show you the competition level, global monthly searches, local monthly searches, and local search trends.

The Broad, Exact, and Phrase options are in the left sidebar under the categories. For most specific search counts, make sure only Exact is checked.

You're definitely on the right track. The key is to be well-rounded... Get your name, your link, and your expertise out there for the world to see. Find a bunch of different marketing techniques that work for you, and stick with them. It can take awhile to move up the ranks, but it's well worth it!

To build on your article marketing, bookmark your articles once they are published. I use socialmarker.com to speed up the process a bit. It's totally free, which is definitely nice You can also start a Twitter page and tweet all of your articles once they're published.

Also, look for some blogs in your niche, and offer to do some guest posting. When you guest blog, it's alot like article marketing because you get a link at the end of your post that's similar to a resource box. The great thing about guest blogging is that it gets your name and link out in front of targeted traffic. And, you can do it even if you don't have your own blog.

I would not suggest paid advertising so early on... You need to make sure your site converts well and your product/service is flawless. (and people actually want to buy it)

One you are 100% convinced that you have a winner, only then splurge on some paid ads.

Find a highly related forum and blend in your post. Use social networking (twit/fb) and join groups related, and occasionally post your offer.

Basically until you have a few successful sales, or people taking your free item... I wouldnt spend on the jumpstart.

You are definitely on the right track but will need to scale up considerably. I often see IMers who wonder where all the traffic is after 4-5 articles as if it just comes like a tidal wave. (I'm not suggesting thats you) You mentioned that you don't have a mailing list so I would start collecting that traffic with an opt in as soon as possible, however little it is. Submitting to dozens of article directories will help as far as backlinks are concerned but don't expect a ton of traffic. The majority of article traffic will only come from the big dogs like EzineArticles, GoArticles, ArticleDashboard, etc. Your article campaign needs to be much larger and consistent.

I realize that requires writing a lot of content so I would look into outsourcing. It is cheaper than you might think if you look around on some of the freelancing sites. If you do not have the capital for that yet then continue you what you are doing until you can reinvest some of your profits into your business.

I think you are totally on the right track. With article marketing make sure you are conducting proper keyword research. Targetting high competition keywords might not bring you any traffic for a very long time. Make sure you go after the long-tail keywords that are more easily attainable for getting good traffic in google. 4-5 articles is basically worthless, you need to make sure you are pumping out hundreds of articles if you want any sizeable amount of traffic. It might take you a long time to personally write enough articles which will start generating traffic from search engines so as other people suggest outsourcing some articles is a good plan. If you can't afford to outsource yet then you might be interested in trying out some article spinning software. This software will take your articles and spin them so they are different and don't get tagged for duplicate content.

Depending on what you are marketing on the forums you might not be able to get a lot of sales/traffic from forum members. I would suggest using forums to build your online reputation and network with people who can help you build you business, and don't use it so much as a tool for making direct money.

Building an e-mail list is also another technique that article marketing is good for. Directing your article marketing traffic to a squeeze page that collects e-mails will allow you to market to the people who signed up with you for free because you have them on your e-mail list. You can send them updates about any new products etc... Make sure you offer valuable information to your email subscribers before you think about getting any sales. Building trust with your e-mail subscribers is essential.

Other sources of traffic you might want to try out could be youtube marketing. Lots of people are getting high volumes of traffic from youtube videos that have a URL water marked in the video.

Also once you've generated some money using free marketing techniques like article marketing and forum posting, you can turn this money around and re-invest it into paid marketing techniques like PPC or outsourcing some of your articles. Building an income using free marketing techniques and brancing off to paid marketing will ensure you don't lose any money (only the time you've invested).

Good luck with your marketing campaign!!

I have heard from others that on just one press release alone they were able to keep business rolling in months after wards. Look at some high PR press release sites for your marketing efforts.

Thanks for all the replies. The site I am pushing is down in my sig. It is basically a content site that has monetized ads. Hoping I can get enogh traffic and people buy from the ads. I think this is the right way to go about it.

I am about to scale up my marketing. I created a little marketing type dashboard using excel, ithas the hyperlink built in so all I have to do is enter my username and password. This is what I have on my dashboard.

I will write a new article each day and submit that article to the following sites.

      Ezin Articles
      Hub Pages
      ArticleBase
      Buzzle
      Go Articles
      Articles Dashboard

After that I will go to what I call Answer Marketing. I'll find questions posted using key words and reply to those answers using keyword and of course putting in my URL. The sites I will visit for this portion is:

      Yahoo Answers
      Wiki Answers

Once completed with that I will go to Forum Marketing. When I forum market I basically find topics related to baby care and provide input on a popular question or new question, preferably keyword related. I generally respond to 1 or 2 posting on each site. I provide a quality response that I think is helpful and again, place my URL in my answer. My URL is also in my profile. I post on these high page ranking baby related forums

      BabyCenter
      Parents
      JustUsParents
      Baby GaGa

After that point I go to the "Other" section of my Excel Dashboard and comment on 2 - 3 blogs using Blogger, again entering my URL in my comments.

I also just made a FaceBook and MySpace soley for my baby care website but haven't done any type of marketing with them because I do not know how to utilize them for marketing. I also need t setup a Twitter account, but again, I do not know how to utilize Twitter for marketing as well.

So yes, I am doing a lot but the question is.... is it enough and is it effective?

Currently doing al of this takes me about 2 hours a day.

If you want to make money online then there is one really important thing you need to know. It’s really quite simple but most people don’t do it. This is what prevents most people from making money because when it comes down to it, most methods for making money online work. However there is usually only one reason why they don’t….it’s because most people never give it a chance…they just don’t stick at it long enough for it to succeed.

You have got a great plan there, and you are obviously motivated - press releases can help - you can go to PRLog and distribute a free press release there, but make sure that it is not a long advertisement but something newsworthy.

With facebook you can set up a fan page and invite your friends and contacts to stay updated about your website through there. You can use Twitter by posting little tips everyday with a shortened link to your URL - again on both sites make sure that you are not just selling stuff, but actually giving some good free information and people will start to follow you and click through. You can use a site like Social Oomph to schedule tweet posts so that you could include that in your 2 hour schedule per day.

    Hope this helps

Thank you sooo much for the feedback. I learned everything that I am doing from reading this forum so it's contributors like you that are making this possible for those of us that are actually motivated. I understand that I am not going to make a whole lot of money from this site, but I would like to start seeing some type of revenue. This is basically my 'practice' site to learn how to drum up traffic and find out what is most effective.

In addition to getting this site up and going plus learning how to market I have created my first product. The site is up and my ebook is published, now I am just awaiting ClickBank approval. So as you can see I am currently trying two different things and have have burned the midnight oil man nights to get my product launched. The only bad thing about my new product is that its shelf life ends on Thanksgiving, after that its done. With that said, if I can get my ClickBank product infront of enough people I should be able to make a killing. Yes, that's right, I believe in my product.... but I suppose if I didn't I wouldn't have invested the amount of time and money I did into it.

If anyone has success and getting a ClickBank product to start selling the day after it is approved I would greatly appreciate some assistance. I know it is asking for a lot and I am sure many will scoff at the idea but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask.

Again, thank you for all the feedback and providing information on press releases and how to use Facebook and Twitter to market my site.

I agree with Nicole that you are missing out on blogging on other people's sites, as well as commenting actively on mommy blogs and other blogs that target parents. Squidoo lenses could also help you in that niche.

Now that you have a product together (which was going to be my next suggestion), you should spend some time connecting with affiliates so they will be linking back to you with keyword phrases you are trying to rank for. Show your affiliates how to make a good keyword phrase hyperlink using their clickbank affiliate link so they can get credit for the traffic.

When you post comments on blogs and other places, don't just link to your main home page, but also to individual articles. It's good to do this on relevant Facebook fan pages as well (they are searchable by Google, etc., and can get passed around).

    Good luck!

      Thanks Joanna,

I have added Blogger as a task to do on my marketing dashboard, I'll add squidoo as well. I comment on mommy forums and do provide direct links to helpful articles/content on my site. So I'm glad I am doing that well. On occasion I will post a direct link to an amazon product that I have used and thinks will benefit them. If they buy from that link I'll make a commission and it helps them at the same time. Anybody have success with using amazon like this? I figure its an opportunity so I should use it.

I would like to talk to you more about launching my product. I like the idea of linking to affiliates so they get traffic and can promote my product. I always thought I would just provide links directly so my sales page.... but I see the advantage of doing it the way you are describing.

Should I start building back links to to my product site right now, even though its not approved yet? Like I said, this product will lose all of its marketability by December so the window is very small.

Thanks, I'll look into that as well. I have no idea what it is, but I'll use the search function here and am sure I'll find the details I need.

Can anyone tell me what is classified as good traffic? I would think if I get 100 unique visitors a day I should start making some money. I have no idea if that's a decent amount of traffic or not. The site is the one in my sig, since someone once said it depended upon my niche.
