Are you thinking like your prospect?

In the UK, the business guru on The Apprentice is Lord Alan Sugar.

This week he has been lambasted by certain people for promoting his latest book on Twitter as if it's some sort of heinous crime.

Yet here, we talk about Twitter marketing as if it's perfectly normal and OK to do it.

So who's right? No-one probably.

It just made me think about the different perspectives that people have of exactly the same thing.

Another one is double opt-in / subscription confirmation. We talk about it here as if everyone knows what it is and understands why they need to do it. Yet ask the average man or woman on the street about it and they won't have a clue what you're talking about. They may even think it's some kind of phishing scam - you just don't know.

It's important to mentally step into the shoes of your prospects - it's almost certain they're not thinking the way you hope they are.

Cheers,

Neil

Well, isn't that the same with every area of expertise?
If you'd hear 2 quantum physicists talking about some very abstract theory, you'd probably not understand anything either.

    I agree Neil.

A while ago I was trying to explain to a friend that he would get more repeat customers to his shop by getting them to sign up to a mailing list. I explained double opt in and why he should use it. He replied that he didn't think his customers would sign up to be on the mailing list and if they did they definately wouldn't confirm the double opt in.

I knew that a lot of people would consider mailing lists to be a scam (In the same way that direct mail was considered to be a scam years ago). However I thought my friend would understand, as his shop is a computer sales and repair shop.

One common mistake in the blogging world is
everybody obsessing with RSS, a technology
virtually nobody uses, much less know what
it is. Email on the other hand...
