This is a very interesting question.

Personally I think mine will be from membership sites, writing eBooks, and thinking of needed products and outsourcing their creation.

One of the best online money making chances ahead:

Online applications will replace software installed on your computer. These applications will be sold as subscriptions.

While you wouldn't want to compete with Microsoft and Google to offer word or spreadsheet applications, there are tons of opportunities for applications that the large companies aren't interested in.

Think niche software applications online.

P.S. You don't need to be a programmer to profit from that. You can outsource the programming and focus on the marketing.

Sorry, it was just the choice of the year to ask about that I couldn't get my head around. LOL.

I think AI might be playing a pretty big role in futuristic opportunities, both online and offline.

Speaking of which... where are the robots? I want a robot!

I can remember how many software solutions were generated by the fear of the Millennium Bug (which seems a bit inadequate looking back, considering it was supposed to obliterate the lot of us and the entire planet with it according to some people!), not to mention all the magazine covers urging us to buy them with their 'exclusive' solution to the problem. The Mayan Prophecy offers a golden opportunity to prosper

After "Who Else Wants To Protect Their Computer From Comet Attack!" and "Quickly And Easily Save Your Data From Tidal Wave Damage" prove to be successful (the technical term for 'unnecessary'), there will be plenty of people in need of a new Twenty-Six Thousand Year Calendar (instant PDF download, even at 2am in the morning!). I imagine lots of marketers could have the alarmist Mayans to thank for an income in 2012

I think that is why he didn't ask about 2013. According to the Mayan calendar we have till Dec 22 2012. No point in asking about dates after that. This is the end game baby, whoever has the most toys wins.

Sorry you don't have a bot yet, but I bet your website has plenty of bots that visit. In this modern era we civilized folks keep our robots out of site, they're kept in factories or vitual worlds. Nothing to see here folks, move along! (Hail Monty Python).

That's very different from what will be the norm in 2012, which was the OP's original question. Goodness only know what we'll be doing decades from now.

As developers, as long as we keep up with developments as they happen then we'll benefit. Playing a guessing game in this field is risky.

  Well, the few decades time frame was for the time when local software will be completely gone.
  
  Subscription type software is already here today. We have several offers in the im niche itself. Thus if I were a software developer that would be what I focus on today and I am very sure there will be tons of offers around by 2012.

  I agree, indeed there's a risk to invest into products that won't take off if someone is an early adopter type. It's easy to get carried away.
  
  I guess this type of software application needs the same market research and market testing as any other product before one should commit too much time and money in it.

A loaded question you have there. I feel it largely depends on how the current world economic/governance structure changes from now until then, and how this will impact the internet & free market capitalism. There is certainly a big shakeup coming and it will probably be a double edged sword.

To give you my specific opinion, I feel that many of the current opportunities existing now will dry up - but at the same rate those who recognize the most powerful niche areas now - will benefit even more in 2012.

That's an interesting question.

I remember as a child (I'm 43) that everyone said we'd all be flying around in little spaceships by the year 2000.

We're not - we all still drive cars. Some things don't change as quickly as we think they will.

As a developer, I try to keep abreast of new developments and have done so since I started prgramming in the early 1980's.

While I agree there will likely be an increase in online subscription services, I'm not convinced that all software will go that way. Why would it? In the 1980's (or was it the 1990's?) everyone was talking about online applications and bare-bones network computers (with no local storage) and, for whatever reason, they just didn't take off.

We'll find out soon enough, I guess.

I have my own ideas of the way things are moving and I'm building a lot of this into the new version of AutoResponse Plus.

  Now this will not happen overnight, but I am pretty sure that a few decades from now there will be no such thing as locally installed software except the operating system.
  
  A few reasons:
  1) The huge software companies will force it.
  - to make residual income.
  - to have better control about usage of software.
  
  2) User will love it.
  - Because they don't have to install software on their PC.
  - And then of course they don't have to take care of upgrades, they will always have the current version online.
  - They save hard disk space.
  - They can use the application from anywhere in the world.
  
  In addition to that, people will become used to storing their files online.
  
  These technologies are changing the way people work.
  
  We internet marketers are the early adopters of these technologies and we are the first people to build the kind of businesses where you can work any time any place you like.
  
  Look at at a few of the things we often already operate online instead of local:
  - our autoresponder, think ARP :-)
  - in many cases we replaced our local web editor with a CMS like wordpress
  - email and contact management
  - rss readers
  etc. etc.
  
  I recently switched my accounting to an online software and I love it. My tax accountant as well as my personal assistant can log in from anywhere and we can discuss stuff over the phone. Awesome.

We all assume that the internet will always be there...be the same...and we'll always have the same opportunities.

Looking at the way it started, and then how it grew, and the rapid changes that take place on a day by day basis, I would't assume anything.

I'd be watching carefully and thinking about where this is all headed....on a day by day basis.

Read "Roaring 2000" by Harry Dent Jr. Sort of an example. We need a new book Harry!

I'll vote the Mayans are wrong again, computers will be implanted in all school kids heads like vaccinations used to be, and direct thought to digital media will be the normal upload/download method. Keyboards will be museum exhibits, and predictions about the future will still be mostly wrong.

Anyone remember the song "In the year 2525, if mankind is still alive..." ? It was all wrong too.

AI would dominate in the coming 2-3 years (Google Algorithm, is a great example) ... money would be in providing "SMART" services and solutions for people ...

LOT OF MONEY WOULD COME FROM:

Courses on making USERS friendly with these new changes
Courses on making Programmers expert on designing applications
Plugin, modules, for all the nextgen solutions.
