Gee that's a bit of a stretch. They are just blocking access to their Gmail account contacts.

Are people using Facebook pages as landing pages, anyway?

  • I think if you are depending on only one method to the get traffic to your website you are setting yourself up for eventual failure. I believe the solution to this is to have multiple different methods of directing traffic to your website and only have Facebook is one of them.
I do find it really interesting how these big corporate companies have all these rivalries going on. Just look at Apple and Adobe for example. At one time in they were best of pals and now they seem to hate each other.
    Just my thoughts.

It sounds almost crazy... I think Google is barking up the wrong tree!!

Google will lose this battle imo.

Facebook is more deeply rooted in society, and if they choose, they can start their own Search engine killing google in a few months... literally.

There is a bit more involved in starting a search engine that being deeply rooted in society!

Google was successful because it knew how to make a search engine.

Google is just telling Facebook that if you don't share you don't get any cake.

But the cold hard truth is... every kid in asia can build an advanced search engine these days... Its not that hard.

Facebook has the money, the talent, and 600+ Million dedicated users.
    Not even MSFT has that.

Google should tread carefully.. that's all im saying.

They really never faced a competitive threat like this before on Search....which consists of majority of their income.

I wouldn't underestimate on how to build a good search engine. Sure you could probably build an ordinary search engine but it would suck (literally). I know that there are a couple of IM'ers who built search engines (can't recall the name of their sites now though) but it never took off.

Why do you think people use google instead of bing or yahoo. It's because google has tweaked it's algo numerous times to make it the best. Okay, i'd better stop before someone thinks i'm working for google. Though i'm sure some of you would like that...

If that statement were true, Google would not have the sustainable competitive advantage it has now and it would have gone out of business already.

Every kid in Asia can build an advanced search engine. Hmmm...

I'm sure if Yahoo and Microsoft can't compete with Google for search, then I think an Asian kid may have problems.

As far as Facebook being more deeply rooted in society - that's debatable. Yes, people spend more time on Facebook because it's a destination site, but do remember that Google.com is still the most visited domain on the planet.

Its written earlier facebook and bing is bringing more quality content, rather than google bringing deep rooted site with merely backlinks on its search result. This diffference alone will set the two giants apart.

I wasn't knocking google search... its amazing and has literally changed my life and countless others..

But in this case... im just saying, facebook can be the biggest competitor google ever encountered.

And don't forget, FB and MSFT are partners with never ending cash.... and FB has a massive user base.

I don't see businesses using FB for search ever, but the common man/woman would imo..... which is a major threat to G no matter how you slice it.

They just need to be careful... Not start a full blown war... because it will get really ugly. (not to say that it would be great entertainment for the rest of us)

PS... and think of the other businesses FB can steal from Google at any given point in time..

    Think Youtube.

Imagine if FB launches a video sharing site... Youtube will be crushed in a matter of hours. I actually watch most youtube videos on facebook from friends posting vids...

The end is nigh for Google... History repeats itself. Just remember the days when Yahoo or MSFT were "untouchable".

Well, if Google wants to start a war with Facebook (or vice versa), then we stand to benefit from it. I like Google but sometimes we want somebody to break their monopoly on search. Whether we like it or not we are all enslaved by Google and if they decide that they don't like our sites, then there's nothing we can do about it. :-)

IMHO google is an out of control monster who thinks they own the internet. Any rival to google gets my support. The fewer entities that control something, the worse it is for those who depend on them. Google often terminates adsense accounts without giving a justification and then when the victims seek an explanation they are out of reach and immune from being accountable for their decision. That is what I have heard from reading a few articles anyway.

... err, except find other methods to drive traffic to your site. If you are wholly dependent on search traffic from Google, you can't be doing too well!

I would NOT want to see Facebook dominate search EVER...
They are so Anti-affiliate marketing...or marketing of any type unless you use their ad platform.

They are worse then google in that sense.
