How many of you do IM full time?

I really don't want to end up in a cubicle after college. I am in my sophomore year now, going for my BS in Network Engineering but I would love to make my own hours and be able to live my life without having to spend most of my day in meetings and cubicles. I figure if I work hard now, I can have a few sites up before the summer and generating money so I can just develop sites for the entire summer and not have to get a summer job, and when I graduate from college I hope to have a ton of sites generating a decent income so I don't have to get a job.
I realize this is quite optimistic But hey, I can always dream :-)
So how many of you do IM full time, and how long did it take to start making a decent income?

I have been a full time marketer since 1999. I traded in a cubicle and bosses for the life that you describe. I work harder now than I ever did for anybody else, but I truly love what I do.

Your goals are not pie in the sky, as you insinuated. It would not be difficult at all for you to have a very decent income working part time while attending college. You could easily set yourself up for a full time career after graduation. The key is to have an end goal and a system in place. Saying that you want "tons of sites" is just too broad. You need a game plan and you need to stick to it.

You can make money online, but keep in mind 97% of people fail because that give up early. I spent a couple of years until I found success.

In my opinion, the one major key to success online is having a mentor/coach to guide you for the first 3 - 6 months.

      To your success.

First I would get your goals all laid out specifically! Not just "I want money" or "I want to work part time" those aren't very descriptive goals that will help you in any way get to where you want to be.

Think of it like a business plan. You need to almost map out every step of your process to getting to the end result now so you know what to look forward to in the future.

You don't want to jump into anything too soon or without enough knowledge... if you need to research...research. You want to make enough money to only be doing that and not rely on another job? Then treat it that way. Treat it like someone came to you right now and gave you their IM business and said take it!

Just some ideas to help get you motivated and try to keep you on the right path.

I do, but I do work more hours currently than I ever did when I had a 9-5. It's on my own terms and I love it though. It's not easy and not for everyone, that's for sure. Good luck

To say I "do IM" full time doesn't really seem to grasp what I do and how I make money. I see internet marketing as just a position within all of the businesses I run online and offline.

Bill_Z I understand it will take more hours to get it up and running and it might even take weekends, but one of the things that draws me to owning my own business is that I can set my own hours, and I can move around. I would much rather work in my apartment than in an office. I wouldn't even have to get out of bed :-)
Thanks Rasifranks, how far ahead do you usually plan? I am writing a plan to get one site up and running, and after thats done I will plan out the next site or upgrade or something. And so on and so forth.
EDIT:FaJeeb, when I say IM I mean whatever it is that you do online with websites that generate money.

    Good thinking.

But follow one thing. One way. One succesful method. It almost sounds like you're trying to mess with a shotgun... don't, shotguns are big and dangerous...

    Yup. Me. Full time.

Although the time i spend doing IM / doing work online has steadily been decreasing over the past year or so, my income has actually been rising at the same time. So i guess you could say i make a full time living from the internet, but i no longer put in full time hours.

Now that said, like most others, when i started out i put in obscene amount of hours. Most of that was spent in learning the ropes, and building a sound strategy. And I'll admit a heck of a lot of time was spent in jumping from one method to another. I'm almost afraid to look at my WSO collection sometimes - it numbers in the thousands! But like others have said before me, true success came when i chose one method, stuck to it, perfected it, and only once it was working did i then add others to mix.

My personal bias is towards offline consulting when starting out, because for me it allowed me to put all my knowledge into practice, and i also learned invaluable skills such as project management, cost projections, customer service, presentation skills, team management, outsourcing... and a whole lot more, which has allowed me to expand into other methods very easily. That said, there are a ton of other methods that work just as well - Article marketing, Forum Marketing, WSO's, Niche marketing, PPC, Offering services (writing, graphic design.. etc.) and so on, that are very effective provided you pick and stick to one

I do IM full time and have for what seems like quite awhile now. I work more than I did when I was in school a lot of the time but that is by choice rather than need. I take vacations but I often find myself drifting back to the computer trying to optimize my campaigns. It has been well worth it.

I quit my job September of last year to start an online business. Started making 'livable' consistent income this August. Don't 'do' internet marketing, treat this as a business. If it's what you really want, put everything on the line and make it happen.

I certainly put in enough time in IM to be "full time". However, I have a part-time job still, and I go to college part time as well.

I'm definitely going to do this stuff for a living, but that's a ways off still.

I am IM full time in that this is my only "job" and has been for 3 years ... I don't have much time to work each day, but I make up for it in efficiency and determination

Theory5, go for it. There's nothing in this world that beats being your own boss imo. I used to get out of the car, having done a 1.5 hour commute to work, ready to literally kill somebody. I've reduced that to a 2 minute commute to my office at home.

My advice to you (from learning this the hard way) dont start lots of sites. Start one, establish it, promote it, get steady traiffic to it, systematize what works and then outsource it.

Then and only then go and start a new site. There are more ways to make money online than you can wave a stick at but its worth remembering the expression: "the money is in the list".

I spent the best part of a year trying to make a living with affiliate marketing, driving traffic to sales pages, setting up review sites and mini sites, before I began to focus on building a list in one niche, and it completely changed the profitability of my business.

Beware of the bright shiny objects

    Good luck with it anyway...

I have been working online for ten years and in IM for the last two years. You have got the right idea, but as mentioned, make yourself a specific plan, with specific short, medium and long term goals. You will be able to utilize the same skills you are using to get your education - you have a goal and a stack of smaller steps you need to go through to get to that goal - do the same with your IM business.

Don't just say "a lot of sites" say something like "I want to create a site a week, or a site a month" and in fact don't say "I want to..." say "I am going to..." and you will get there.

I love that you are thinking ahead, a lot of young people don't because they are looking for the fast buck. You know your timeline and you know what you have to achieve in a certain space of time, so go for it and all the best

To my opinion, the key to success online is to have a experinced mentor who will guide you until you feel you are comfortable with what you are doing. And without theory you cant succeed in practice. some people ignore the theory, but my advice is that you shouldnt. first of all you have to gain an insight about the theory of what IM is like. then jump into the cold waters.

I have been doing IM since 1998 when the company I worked for downsized. It's great to be able to set my own hours. But it does take a lot of hard work and sticking to a plan. I had a rough beginning in IM chasing and following every "shiny" new program that came out without much of any success. Then someone said to me the way to be successful, find a person that is successful and do what they do. I thought "That's It!"

So I looked and searched until I found 5 very successful people in this industry and began imitating everything that I saw them do. I wish someone would have given me this advice much earlier, it would have made things so much easier.

Am I where I want to be? Not yet, but I am no where near where I was either!

I have heard that "You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want."

If you are looking to do IM full time... I will join with the others who have commented and said...

    1. Get yourself a plan/goal - stick with it.
    2. Find yourself a successful mentor - imitate what they are doing.
    3. Be consistent with the little things - everyday.

    To your Success!
