Hosting, domains and dreamweaver...

I am going to buy a domain soon but need an easy site builder that when I press Publish would publish straight away and no need to enter ftp and all that. I have heard godaddys isn't great so am thinking of trying hostgator?
This is basically because dreamweaver doesn't work on my computer properly . So yeah thoughts/comments what I should do where I should go?

Thanks in advance.

Lot's of people here build sites using wordpress. You can install wordpress with a few clicks in your hosting account's control panel, choose a theme, and start adding content right away.

I recommend using a host who offers cpanel and fantastico control panels. Godaddy doesn't, but Hostgator and many others do.

Tom, I use Dreamweaver and find external FTP software easier to use for uploading to my hosting space.

I like CuteFTP - their cheapest version - less than $20 I think. And I've used Filezilla with equal success - it's FREE!

Dreamweaver is a wonderful program, but not all that easy to learn. I bought a course in a book (Not the one from Adobe), spent about 6 weeks going through it, then signed up for an evening course at a local community college. There I could ask questions.

Wordpress will let you quickly build blog type websites, but sometimes you really need Dreamweaver.

Another good (and free) webdesign software is KompoZer. It's available at KompoZer - Easy web authoring

Just seen that wordpress is only $17 a year which is better than hostgators $60 a year but is there a downside?

I think that you are confusing hosting with sitebuilding software.

Hosting is what Hostgator is charging you for.

As mentioned earlier, be sure that you register your domain with a DIFFERENT company. I have a free Cheat Sheet explaining WHY you need to do this available on one of my memberships sites. You need to join the Basic membership, but it is free to join

Why Use Different Companies for Domain Registration and Web Site Hosting? | surviveandconquercoaching.com

If you do decide to use HostGator for hosting, you then have access to install WordPress using their Fantastico Installer, for free.

WordPress the blogging software and content management system (easily used for non blog websites) is open source and is free. It can be installed manually on most Linux servers (not on Windows servers).

If you decide not to use Hostgator, it is possible to install WordPRess with a different hosting company, as long as the server software is compatible.

You can't write on a domain-name, only on a website. I'm not trying to be funny: you need to understand this.

You buy a domain-name from a registrar (NOT the one where you're going to host the site. "Namecheap" will do). Then you "point" the registrar's domain-name servers at your host (Hostgator will do) so that when people type your domain-name into their browser or click a link for it, that's where they get taken. And there (at the host) you have a website. Wordpress is being recommended to you, and it's easy to write articles in. No FTP required.

Alternatively, you can use hosting with a "non-blog" built-in website-builder. Examples would be Weebly, Yola, Blinkweb, and so on. Again you buy the domain-name and direct it to your site (and again, you don't buy the domain-name through Weebly, Yola or Blinkweb, though they do sell them).

Suggestion: there are videos on YouTube explaining all this stuff: have a browse around there?

Also, if you use Hostgator, they have great little tutorial videos explaining it all point by point.

Tom, go to a domain specialist like Namecheap and register your domain (coupon here).
Then go to HostGator and sign up. You then point your domain name nameservers to your hosting account. They will give you instructions.

You can try Netfirms for domains. They offer free privacy and if you do Google search for a coupon code you can get a discount. I recently bought a .com for $4.95.

You can easily point your new domain to Hostgator.

Hostgator is definitely the way to go for hosting. They have everything you need technically and their customer support freakin' rules compared to others that I've tried.

You can install Wordpress with Fantastico in about 60 seconds.

Then you can use customizable themes like JVPress, Socrates or EazyTheme to create just about any kind of page you want.
