What is the significance of a Technorati tag?

I've heard of Technorati tags, and they sound a bit old school. But what are they exactly, and why do they appear to be so significant?

Are Technorati tags different from the tags you put in your Wordpress blogs or other blog platforms?

Just wondering.

I've also wondered about the same thing myself a few times, beacuse when I post to my blogs using Zoundry Raven, it gives me the option of adding Technorati tags. However, I've never attempted to investigate it.

Perhaps someone can enlighten us?

what I know is that these tags serve as the backlinks to your site. But they don't have much value. In simple words it is better to have them for any case...
