Will the Internet WIN... after the economic slump

I am a big believer that the Internet marketing based solutions are going to "kill" the old school media type advertising of newspaper, magazines and yellow pages.

I am of the opinion that the current economic contraction will accelerate the trend.
I have spent a lot of money and time to improve my search engines ranks. As I expect the "value" of good search results will be even more important.

Your thought?

It depends on what you are marketing. I still advertise heavily in newspapers and magazines. About a third of my online sales comes from offline advertising. Don't count out the power of "old school" advertising. It is still very effective for an overall marketing strategy.

I know here where I am at, the print media is taking a serious hit. I don't think they will completely disappear, but I think you will see a dramatic shift in the publishing industries focus.

Most of them realize they need to tap the power of the Internet to stay in the game.

daily I see media talking about how they have to cope with the internet in order to exist

Online advertising is evolving, while offline advertising is fading away.

Both can be profitable and should be used if possible.

Anyone see the new tmobile/google g1 mobile phone? People are becoming more and more connected -Good for us marketers..

Although many say it will die, I'm sure offline advertising will be around for several decades. (I'm still waiting for the paper free office to come true...)

There's no doubt though that online ads will continue to grow.

But you'll find that the most successfull marketers make use of offline advertising as well (including traditional snail mail direct mailings), while only the 'smaller' marketers restrict themselves to online advertising.

It is however a very good strategy to focus on SEO as it brings free traffic and people will continue to rely on SEs.

Well, you have a point. It's cheaper and can easily achieve if you are good in research. Look at how youtube enter the scene.

Internet marketing is already killing traditional media. That's why newspaper companies are getting slammed (Craigslist killed their cash cow classified business). Adwords killed newspaper advertising and tv commercials.

Why spend a bazillion dollars on a tv commercial that MIGHT get you something when you can spend much much much less and actually segment your target market? No brainer.

That being said, we are deleveraging now in our economy. Lots of assets (old factories, newer cars, houses, etc) are all going to be recycled over the next few years. Internet marketing will take a huge piece of the advertising pie as people realize it's cheaper on a per prospect basis than any other advertising format.

It's easier, cheaper, and takes less time...why advertise anywhere else?

    Cheers,

Hey, electronic magazines, and periodicals are the future. Online is the only way to go. Have you seen the new technology behind Sporting News: See A Different Game ????

Now that's what a news publication will look like online. This company is the first in the world to apply this "newspaper" look technology.

My friend and publisher Ed Baker, tells me that the response has been overwhelming since the launch of this new technology.

Even if you don't like sports, you'll love the technology!

I am not an affiliate, and the service, by the way, is free. I'm serious it is free! And boy does it rock!

It is not the first. Many newspapers and magazines have been online with this format for years. They all have an online option to subscribe to their hardcopy editions including Sporting News.

By limiting your advertising to online, you are missing 30-50% or more targeted prospects who read trade magazines, regional newspapers, local cable TV, and radio. Also, direct mail is still very powerful and effective. The key is to maximize all available resources to get your message out to the most likely prospects of your products or services.

Advertising is actually significantly down in all media; I think that has more to do with current economic conditions.

If the economy continues to decline people will start cutting back on their purchases and I would think the newspaper would be one of the first things people would cut back on. If people don't buy as many newspapers I can see many newspapers going out of business.
