Text Only Sales Video VS Infomercial Style?

I recently had a sit-down with a video marketing group. They wanted to make a 2-3 minute montage video, with live people speaking and clips from my video product.

I'm unsure about this though because I see many people using these audio-only spoken videos with text on the screen.

Just to be clear, this is going on my SALES PAGE.

What's your opinion. Are these info-mercial style videos a waste of money? I don't see ANYONE using them on the web.

  • It really depends what you're marketing. They can work, but only for the right niches.

I certainly wouldn't suggest something like that for Internet Marketing, for instance (by all means split test it, but don't be surprised if the standard type of video marketing converts better for the IM crowd).

No this isn't internet marketing stuff. This is dating/seduction video stuff for men.

I'm selling videos of a live seminar with a bunch of speaker event.

Actual faces are always better than plain text. Plain text sales videos are only being used because they are easy to create.

Brian, that's exactly what *SEEMS* right to me too. More professional, more engaging, and more personal.

But I know people are who pulling $1m/year using these text-based videos.

If a friendly face increased their income by only 3% it would be a no-brainer.

What concerns me is that I've NEVER seen video montage or infomercial used as a sales video.

The only other thing I could think of is that its VERY expensive to split test a video. It's almost not even worth doing.

I think that you are making the assumption that the "gurus" that are pulling in seven figures all know what they are doing. Some of them have merely positioned themselves in the right place at the right time and couldn't tell you how they did it. Others have gone on to teach what they do, including using the text only videos, and would never admit that there is a better way, even though they know there is.

Well it's just that I haven't really ever seen infomercial sales videos for information products. I mean, maybe it's not worth it - or maybe it's that those types of things don't work well for those types of products. I don't know really...

The other thing is that, I assume, the video would have to be like 30 minutes long for maximum effect - just like a real infomercial.

    Yeah, I think it depends.

Two recent big launches lately did it different ways. Andy Jenkins' launch was the non-person style. Jeff Walker's launch was the talking head style.

Personally, I prefer to see infographics, screencasts, etc. that relate to what's being said than just a talking head. ... If it's "just text" I wouldn't say that. But if you can illustrate your points, I think that's more powerful. Show; don't tell.

Of course you can do a combination -- illustrating whenever possible and then the talking head when there's not much to show.

I think a video could be really effective in the dating niche, but it could also be a killer if you don't have the right person in front of the camera. If I was a desperate virgin (for lack of a better description), I wouldn't want to see a sloppy, unkempt, obese guy trying to give me advice when it's obvious he's in a worse position than I am, but on the other hand, if he's pulling women left and right in the video, you'd definitely have my money in seconds.

I say go for text on video with voice over and pictures. You can even do talking head to the right. I just saw a launch with Les Brown and Paul Martinelli, Empowerment Mentoring that did this. I like to read and see pictures while I listen/ watch.

    Good luck!
