Pricing for software product - help please?

Hey all,

I'd appreciate a little help or advice from programmers who've released software utilities recently, and from people that might be interested in using a software product.

I've been selling a package for a couple of months now, but am having trouble getting the price just right to maximize sales.

There's been a fair bit of interest and enough sales to warrant spending more time developing it further, but I've had a really mixed response to the price.
I've tested at various price points for various target markets and am now more confused than ever.

My initial thought was that since people could basically do this for themselves if they took some time to google it, a low price would be best. Bad move. Very few sales. Hike the price to something I thought was reasonable, in the sub 50 area, and had some sales and some abuse at the ridiculous amount I was charging (mostly from more techie folk). Dropped the price a bit, got fewer sales. Raised it to what I thought was ridiculous levels, got some more sales and even more abuse.

My question is how do you objectively set a price that makes it worth your while to develop a product, yet still appeal to a reasonably broad market?

Thanks,

Will.
