Wordpress Category Pages

Hello Warriors,

Can someone help me out with something that is puzzeling me today?

I want a way to add a custom page that will be visible when someone clicks on a category on my wordpress site.

So the category page will appear as my custom page, then the excerpts from each post in the category below that page.

I know I can fil in the description in the category page of control panel and then alter the template to show the description, but this small box is limited.

I want a way to use the WYSIWYG editor to create a full page of content to be visible above the excerpts so a non technical user can come in and create it after I set it up.

I have tried my best to find a plugin that does this but my Googling has not turned anything up. I am guessing this is a very common thing that people want and I have seen several sites that have custom text on their category pages, I just cant figure out how they are doing it.

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks!

  • Well... I'm just going to go at it with an idea...

You could have a custom *page* that does this. I'm njot sure about a category.. Then what you would do is call the posts from X category to show up, and throw whatever else you want on the page..

You know those templates that allow you to select "full width" etc.. That's the type of custom thing you're doing.

I'm not sure of all the details... however!

  • Yes, this is an idea. I did see some plugins that mentioned about adding posts to pages. So I create the page, then use a plugin to display all the posts in a category at bottom.

Do you know of a plugin that would let me do this?

    • You need to stop thinking in the "plugin" frame of mind.. It might need to be custom coded.

  • i think you can do that whit thesis theme,
  • Aren't the Category Templates exactly for that?
(but they are not editable form the miserable wysiwyg monster of WP...)

  • you mean something like this...

    • Thats exactly what I want! Can you tell me where I can get that?
  • Success! I finally found a plugin that does exactly this - Rich Text Tag, Category, and Taxonomy Descriptions for WordPress | Denver SEO Blog

I guess my "plugin frame of mind" paid off
