I see alot of people say to protect your wordpress blogs from spam with addons, what are the negatives of someone spamming my blogs, should I really care?

    Hi,

You should care if/when you rely on search engines for traffic.

I have several components on my wordpress blog, and the traffic died in sept when malware and spam got on a few pages. Then google gave a "Infected Warning" and life was over. I spent a week cleaning up with virus scanners and finally got the warning "off" google searches.

There are many types of spam --it's best to keep all of it off. In fact, WF is very successful because they have kept out spam with the help of diligent admins.

WARNING: once I left a forum software alone, only find out ***ld porn on it. Spammers had taken over and put the garbage on it, and it looked like that was all I did. I deleted the entire forum immediately. Turn your back and there are plenty of idiots who will take over... be aware!

    success,
    Sam

I had this happen to me too. They want to post where it doesn't lead back to them it leads back to the forum owner. Sick ****s!

You should obviously protect your blog from being spammed by the users. They can destroy your site's rank.

Besides the fact that spam can affect your rank, spam just looks ugly on your website. Blogs can easily get more spam comments than real comments so keeping your spam levels minimal is key.

Also spam looks very unprofessional. Other readers of your blog will probably be less likely to comment if they are competing with a bunch of spam comments. Delete all your spam and install spam filters!

Oh yeah you should care and if you do not check porn sites can be linked to your site hurting your rep and your rankings.

I always look at the link before I approve any posts to make sure its on the up and up.

If your blog links to low quality sites and so called
"bad neighborhoods" the pages which contain spam
    will be penalized.

If your ratio of good pages to bad pages is low, your
    entire domain will be penalized.

    Absolutely.

If you're going to leave spam comments posted, you'll drive away your legit visitors and buyers. Gives a TOTALLY unprofessional appearance.

      Please don't buy from spammers...

      1. That only encourages more spam.

      2. You'd be surprised how many fakes are sold via spam.

      Sam.

In addition to what's already been said, spam discourages legitimate dialog from occurring.

Don't kid yourself. WF is one of the easiest forums to spam because of it's liberal signature policies.

You see it here everyday, the typical pattern is a new member asking some lame newbie question but even this newbie who acts like they don't know anything already has a link in their signature.... things that make you say hmmmmm?

Oh yeah, a lot of other bad advice in this thread as well.

Unless you are going to moderate it real-time, I would turn off comments. That is a great way to get your site trashed.

I say use Akisma that comes with Wordpress. Just get an API key for it and it handles ALL spam.

I would definitely care about spam! It can mess you up in terms of SEO, and just make your blog look like an autoblog.

You should use Akismet. Theres also other anti spam tools like Defensio, which I've heard about but never used.

    I'd stick with Akismet.

Gosh! It will be very unprofessional if your blog or site is full with spam. Readers would have to wade through those "enlargement pills" comments, loan for granpa comments, etc...

Basically I don't automatically accept just any comments on my site. Every comment will have to go through moderation before they get published.

    Hope that make sense.

Rewrite the comment so it is compelling inquisitive and interesting, change the link to a good neighborhood, (or another domain of yours on a separate class C IP or remove it altogether). Then reply to the comment as the admin. (Always reply to good comments, shows you are involved and care.) The comment shows as having been posted from another IP than yours so looks like it be a hopping blog.
Yet there ya be... Talking to yourself again.

      HAHAHA !!! THis is EVIL!

This is certainly what you wanna do. I've got 500 spam comments at once before, tempted to do that, but heck! 500 comments. I thought it was faster to be deleted than moderating it... So it went right to the rubbish bin

Thanks for this anyway : "Yet there ya be... Talking to yourself again."

True, however leaving a new post asking a naive newbie question and already having a link in their signature... follow the link and most of the time you can tell right away that the person is not a newbie but simply using dummy accounts and forums (like this one) for backlinks.

Same goes for the people who bump old posts or leave nonsense replies, leave 1 post with a signature and on to the next dummy account... rinse and repeat. Another backlink in the bank.

There was a post awhile ago asking about people who start threads asking questions and then never return or reply again.... well, sherlock, the spammers got ya.

Every forum backlinker knows that the WF is a dofollow forum that allows signatures, don't be naive and think they aren't exploiting this forum just like all of the others.

Surely having all comments so they have to be accepted eradicates spam? sure, you'll have to go through the comments and accept them but it's probably the best solution.

Heh, get used to it. I get so much spam every day that it's not even funny. So I'm not sure why I'm laughing.

I would just take some measures against it like Akismat, but beyond that I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure that you don't let spam comments and such go live on your blogs.

Yes. It is very alarming if people keep on spamming your site or blog since it will bring a negative impression on you from search engines. The Big G's spiders might regard your site as a link farm and this may affect your reputation and PR.

If comment links are no-follow, why would spammers continue to post their links? Makes me wonder if they actually get any sales from people clicking on their links, considering that their links have no value from a SEO standpoint.

Of course you should care. They are your properties and you would do well to protect them.

You have to remember that from a point of view of a spammer, it is just another second worth of work to spam a blog - if they are using software - so I would not give them such a pleasure of doing so.
