I just checked out an offer from a guy whose ezine I subscribe to. He does crazy offers all the time.

I have the product already, but wanted to see the crazy offer.

When I clicked away I got anti-exit strategy 1 (an Exit blocker - ok to navigate away, cancel to navigate back to sales page with a discount).

Clicking OK and I got bombarded with anti-exit strategy 2 - a repeat of the above, but with a $10 discount offer.

I OK'd that too only to find...

the site opened an exit popup of the same page again, again with the 2 exit blockers I just mentioned.

That's a total of 6 ways to expose me to the product and stop me getting away!

I think exit pop-unders are an excellent marketing tool even if they are a touch sly. Not so keen on the one's where you have to click OK or cancel.

6 popups? That's the kind of site I never go back to. Exit popups can be a great tool, but if you piss your potential customers off with them then they're doing more harm than good.

That is a dangerous strategy to pursue, aside from making potential customers made.

I had some cases where injunctions were order prohibiting repetitive pop-ups that prevented a person from using their web browser software and computer as they intended, and which forced messages upon them.

(The fact these were explicit porn popups also made it real easy for the court, but the underlying legal theories were not dependent on the explicit advertising.)
