Google Gets it right again

I just noticed that beside the search results there is now a spy glass which gives an image of the site.

This is a great idea as now you can have a look before wasting time going to the site.

When researching I often have to open numerous tabs to filter through all the crap sites and now it is just a click away.

Of course if you have a crap site this will not help you one bit so I guess you will have to lift your game now or loose traffic.

Nice - I like that. I think Google is really making major progress here and making search quicker and easier!

Our own Kurt Melvin had this "major progress" in some software he sold 6 or 7 years ago. Forget the name - maybe FatBomb? If I recall correctly you could click a link and get an inline popup preview.

  • Oh! So now we should also work on making our site look beautiful in that magnifying glass preview.

Design communicates trust, but so do marketing techniques. If Google's users can preview a website without being able to discern the content of the page what do you think they will do? Judge the website based on appearance like they would a person, so marketing techniques become useless if you neglect the design aspect.

Personally, I'd wager the body of people who make up the convertible 25% don't play with features like these, and that traffic is going to drop off for those with low design budgets. Whether that traffic drop-off is unconvertible or not is something we'll know in the coming months.

I can see it now. Flash intro pages will be coming back as soon
a G makes it possible to watch movies in the preview.

As one person said if you have video all you get is a blank space so I have put a graphic as a background in the cell of the table and will see what that does once it caches.

I do like the new feature... but somehow, I miss the plain and simple Google search from the good ol' days

They must be rolling it out a few data centers at a time. It's still the same old Google for me.

    Really? Seriously?

You can tell the quality of content from looking at that snapshot?

The only thing that snap tells you is how they format the actual website... It tells you nothing about the actual quality of the content shown on the site...

You are attributing a level of logical thinking to the average surfer I am not sure is present.

For instance you could quite logically argue the fact that an ugly sales man should sell as much as an attractive woman, but we know it isn't so.

If appearances didn't matter ebooks would not have 3D covers.

I wouldn't say Google gets it right again. I would say Google copied the idea from Bing, just like they copied "their" redesign of the Google images pages from Bing.

Not a good sign when Google is being an also-ran instead of an innovator.

that feature is not something that will be readily accessible here in Nigeria cos of our slow servers. I hope soonest we will begin to enjoy this features.

Moreover, I think the first impression of a website now matters so much cos if your website does not look good, you might not convert.

Hmmmm ... Just checked it out and it worked great on the first search, but with follow-up searches it wouldn't open the preview ... Strange or what??

Serious benefits: visitors or surfers looking for porn, or the adult niche. Because most surfers can decide which site to go to just checking those thumbnails. There, design, images and models play a vital role and those define the content.

However, for rest of the industry, it will just be a first impression of the website design or layout I would say. And many boring looking websites have rich contents there in. So merely judging a site by that thumbnail image will not be a good idea at all.

On the other hand, it tends to make sites using common templates look derivative and give preference to those using custom designs.

So, the sites that will stand out are the ones that have unique designs and don't look like every other site out there.

Now, it may be that someone just grabs a theme and builds a quality blog around it, focusing on top-notch content.

But, there are many people, marketers especially, that will grab a free or common theme that looks nice but is chock full of worthless $2 articles. The odds are pretty good that if they won't spend on quality content, they won't spend on a custom design either.

Of course, if this takes off, it just means that more marketers will be spending money on design and less on actual content. So, we'll soon see people wanting $1/article writers.

Great. Now the anti porn software on my teenager's computer is going to have to block Google too.

nah, you wont have to block Google, they don't give you the preview option for adult sites, which makes sense.

In the school I teach at you can see the preview
of sites that are blocked by the net monitoring software.

Unfortunately, there's a lot more material that you wouldn't
want children to see - such as hate sites.

If you look closely, you will notice many of those sites are not available for preview. Google isn't that stupid.

I don't like it because I want a search engine to be reactive - not interactive. But that's just me.

I guess Johnathan you have to think of the overall clientelle of Google.

So far out of 100 people I surveyed they all loved it. None are selling anything online but use Google at home or work.

I have this habit of clicking and highlighting things
just for the sake of it(I think it's ADHD) and the

I'd prefer if you actually had to click the zoom link
before they show the preview. Damn, Google!

Well, often I can tell the instant I land on a site that it is junk, and, often, a thumbnail view would have been sufficient to display the tell-tale signs of a worthless website.

i guess one of the reasons they implemented that kind of sneak peak was to get a glimpse of something you search for. Instead of clicking and clicking to unrelated sites short description would do the thing.

A person looking for information will know right away if a site is a squeeze or sales page and skip it.

Hype hype hype, no information, gimme your email. Those sites, IMO, are crap that provide no value.

If you could just have seen this site in the preview first.

    Worlds Worst Web

BGMACAW that is a very interesting point about porn and kids.

Actually having a look the spy glass is not against any porn site so they must be able to rule it out by your settings or something.

IF only there was a way to check how many times a person did see my website's preview... and how many of them click on... Now that would be helpful.

But have that #$# in there and no data to track... arrgggghh.

Google never ceases to amaze me.
