Ezine Subscriber retainment help...

On a natural built list which was approaching the 1000 mark, I have now lost 500 subscribers through pushing a launch of a product which stretched them a little bit.

The value of the content of this ezine is very high and I've had numerous testimonials for the ezine itself, not to mention the products been sold...

But this is a real ouch and a shock to be honest...

Anyone know how to keep unsubscribes down as much as possible?

Thanks,

Sam

Despite the fact that I am an ezine publisher since many years, I have to admit that I never ever heard about a 50% unsubscribe rate

In case "the value of the content of this ezine is very high" as you said, then the answer is in your post (see below)

If you've never marketed to the list and you hit them with a whopper of a promotion, expect lots of unsubs. 50% is outrageous, so you offer must have been offensive in some way shape or form.

    Hey,

I've been a list owner for 9 years. Have over 13,000 current readers with over 18,000 subscribes. 50% off of one promotional mailing is really a lot.
You have to get your subscribers used to getting advertisements in their
weekly or whatever newsletter issues, and for a 'big promotion' i only do 4
emails to build it up.. Get big sales that way. Otherwise, do 1-4 emails a
    month selling stuff.

Another great method for making sales in newsletters in a non offensive way is to write a 10 page free report which gives good content and funnels your free readers to the sales page for sales or commission..

One more thing, be sure you give good content. I practically give everything away to my readers except the super good stuff which
    I sell.

Don't stuff hardcore sales down your readers throats if they are not
expecting it.. Constantly mention your products in little ads and solos
but never out of the blue.

    My two cents

Was it a big promotion that was being done by everyone else?

I know that at times I purged my email from many email lists just because I got tired of getting 10-20 emails of the latest product launch within hours of each other.

Another possible reason for an unsubscribe is that people who read your newsletter weren't groomed to be sold to and then were shocked  when they were promoted to. They may have thought they finally found a good, informative ezine and then felt "betrayed" when you hit them with a big money pitch.
