Guys need your help.

I'm helping an offline contact out with creating a website for their business.

will probably offer to host it etc.

just wondering how you guys identified rates for this kind of thing and is there a market standard?

I'm based in montreal if that helps.

thanks
dan

It depends on how high quality the site is, how many pages there will be, how much will be on those pages, and any other services you might offer.

In the end it is up to you. Check elance and this forum to see what others are charging for similar services.

"offline" and "online" pricing are really two different things.

What i would suggest, is work out what you are going to offer the client (ie wordpress, 5 pages, seo optimized + article marketing for 3 months).

then what you need to do, is work out how much you would like to get paid. Work out the time involved in making the site (+options), and add it all up, it's always best to add an extra 20-30% on top for "unexpecteds".

What do you charge for your time? well a good idea is to see what contractor's are charging for their time. another way to work out what a fulltime employee would cost (hint yearly wages / ~208 (working days) / 7 (working hours / day) * 1.5 (.5 for extra - like insurance etc). that should really give you a good indication.

If that is totally clear, let me know, and i'll go into a lot more detail if you'd like

Hi justin thats super clear thanks.

i agree online would not be an issue, But offline I think could be a lot more.

Plan to use a modified template design.

      Basic content 5-10 pages
      possible translation of site.

then was going to offer backlink service, hosting, tech support etc.

all those things offliners have no idea about.

I know average price around here is $1500 for a unique site.

So was going to aim for $750 as a modified template

The pricing depends on various factors like how much time you will give for that site. The complexity of site is also a key factor involved to calculate the total price.

One more factor which I usually consider while doing web development is personal satisfaction of what you are getting from your customer. If you get let say $200 for a small 5 page static site which don't involve any flash or dynamic stuff and you are satisfied with that price then you should go for it and don't try to get that price for which you didn't work.

Other factors that would affect pricing are the geographic market, as well as your target industry/business. Another factor to consider is how much effort you want to put into marketing your websites to businesses. Obviously, at higher price points (especially above $1,000) you're going to have to put much more time and effort into closing a sale with them.

I've seen wildly varying price points, but if you're just starting out I'd recommend not to price your services any higher than the median pricing in your market until you build your reputation.
