What's Your Email Open Rate?

Hey Warriors,

I just wanted to know what would constitute a good email open rate?

Mine comes in at around 14% and I can't help but think that's a little on the low side.

Thanks

I get around 25% to 45%, but I analyze my subject lines a ton and I segment my lists on the more important broadcasts.

email open rate has to be the most unreliable of all email
      stats!

this is because an email is marked as opened if a small
graphic is 'pulled' - so if html mail is 'off' in your recipient's
email client? the mail is marked as not opened, even if it
      was in fact read.

at least you can not get a false open! so just keep in mind
that whatever numbers you get are the low end, the true
open rate could be (or not be) higher.

    Eric's right on the money.

As an absolute measure of people who opened your mail, it's innacurate and meaningless.

It can be used to show the trend - the higher you push it, generally the more people are opening your email - you just don't know accurately how many or who they are.

    Cheers,

Comparing open rates between different list owners is
      meaningless.

For a start, your open rate is dependent upon how your
      autoresponder measures the figure.

For example, the headline open rate figure that AWeber
provide is for total opens, whereas another provider like
      Infusionsoft quote only unique opens.

(That said, it's possible to find the unique open rate figure
within AWeber - it just takes a bit of hunting down).

Your open rate will also depend upon your target market
      and subject area too.

There's just too many variables for it to be a sensible judge
      of performance between list owners.

I only use open rates to measure the effectiveness of
my own subject lines, etc - for a given list.

I just watch how MY open rate figure goes up or down
for a given broadcast based upon my split tests.

      Dedicated to your success,

I have a couple that have opened at 71-73% (all in lists of 1000 -32,000 subs). Comes from really understanding my niche, and email marketing.

On average though, across all my niches, the high 20s to 30s.

I'm with Steve at 60-80% - most of my e-mails are pure content, so when I do push something I know it will definitely be opened and clicked. I also understand my niche better than anyone
