Rudd and Conroy to censor Australian Internet: Say NO!

Everyone already knows that politicians don't understand new fangled devices like those computer thingos, and that world wide web program.

And in this blissful ignorance they tend to make uninformed decisions.

Does Australia really want to be the third country in the world to censor their internet? From what I understand it's currently only China and a country in the Middle East (sorry, I don't remember the name).

How about we spend the tens of millions of dollars that Rudd and Conroy want to spend on slowing our internet down, and instead invest that into law enforcement programs that can actually make a difference?

How about we stand up and demand that our politicians actually work for US, not the other way round.

Remember: we run this country. It's our decision, not their's.

    G`day Sam,

NO we do not need censorship like this ... China with ALL their
resources still only manages to filter out 60% of material they
deem unfit so that says it all doesn`t it ... quite obvious to the
commen man this isn`t about porn at all.

They talk about having a grand list of 10 000 sites!?? WOW ...
what about the other few 10`s of million other sites that fall into
    the category??

What about those that will simply bypass the filtering anyway??

I have already seen talk of censoring topics such as euthanasia
... how long before "politically sensitive" topics are censored??
I`d give it an hour or two ... lol ..

I`m all for ridding the net of porn and protecting our children
but as I just said to Senator Conroy`s office ...

    IT`S NOT EVEN A BANDAID!

How many ISP`s signed up for the trial?? .. lol .. ONE! ... maybe
there is more now but the ONE that did signup did so to show how
stupid it is ... to provide the REAL data to show how ridiculous the
scheme is ... to yell loud when good sites are blocked and yell loud
    when the bad ones aren`t.

    Man I am pissed off!

    Christopher J.

P.S. I just got rid of caveman internet to dagnabbit!!

There's some facinating information on that site:

    1) This can slow Australian internet down by up to 80%

    2) This only blocks websites. The real damaging material out there isn't displayed on websites, so the filter is useless anyway.

    3) The tests have shown about 1 out of every 100 websites banned will be mistakenly banned.

    4) The censorship will also cover LEGAL websites, and some policiticans are using it to push their own agendas, such as blocking websites that deal with euthenasia and anorexia.

    5) Labour has budgeted $44 million for this. Experts and ISP's agree it will be a technical disaster. Even child protection agencies are agreeing that this isn't the right solution.

    6) This doesn't stop the real dangers for kids online - cyber bullying and paedophiles.

It's a huge lump of money to be spent on a technically infeasible plan that doesn't address the problem it claims to.

Who ever thought "dumbing down" the internet so it's of acceptable level for a child of an indeterminate age is a good idea?

Even the government agrees that education is much more effective than a blank censorship filter.

If we want to protect our kids, then we install NetNanny, monitor their internet usage, and, God forbid, sit down and discuss the topic with them.

Before the internet was invented, kids had to watch out for strangers trying to give them a lift home from school. This filter is todays version of banning all adults from driving cars so that no kids can be offered a ride home.

It's frustrating that so many politicans don't understand the technology they're playing God with.

    cheers

That`s a whole big-ar$e list of negatives Sam ... and the one postive
for this is clearly not going to have even the slightest effect on that
which it is supposed to be stopping/limiting/censoring ... so why?

The fact they are using just general terms and leaving definitions of
material to censor very vague is the clue of course ... so obvious it
        is sickening!

A recent phone-in poll from a radio station gave 80% AGAINST it ...
80 percent ... why is it so darn obvious to the average Aussie that
this will not work for what it is being proposed for yet our so called
"edumacated elite" in Govt. don`t see that?

Edumacated... they are the face of whatever department they are incharge of. They have an advisor for almost every facet of the department helping them to make decisions on what is SUPPOSEDLY best for everyone!

I would love a chat with the edumacted advisor of Conroy who got the ball rolling on this!

Wor Sam, I never realised this was going on and I thought I am well informed. Never miss a news bulletin.

Well Rudd is in bed with the Chinese and obviously they may be pushing him a bit too to ensure their censorship. I saw some Chinese recently who get information from Australia either by some web site or other or through Skype. I guess that will be the next thing they target.

Having said that it is tough to see the porno sites surviving and also the rip off merchants from Nigeria and other places. But they do a lot of their targeting through e-mails. I guess that will also be in the firing line.

Gosh! What will be left of free speech.

Is there a policy outline available to the public? I ask because we need to know the areas where filters will be at their most restricting...

An actual step by step guide letting Aussie users and the likes of us Aussie iMarketer's know where our income streams may be restricted to.

Thanks for enlightening us Aussies Sam.

    Hi Norma!

I remember reading about it awhile ago, but I was quite suprised how quickly it crept up and was suprised to hear they'd already run a trial.

It's amazing that such a huge thing can be done without most people knowing that it's going on.

Is there a policy outline available to the public? I ask because we need to know the areas where filters will be at their most restricting...
From what I've read, no. And this is one of the biggest issues:

They haven't released information on which sites will be banned (and from what I understand it won't ever be released, but don't quote me on that).

They have told us WHO will make the decision on what site should be banned and what shouldn't.

And they haven't told us how to apply to remove a ban (or if it's even possible) for a site that was mistakenly banned.

Imagine, as an internet marketer, that you promoted a website that sold an ebook about how to help anorexia, but then it was mistakenly banned as "too controversial", and then you had to submit a form and wait for six months before the ban was lifted.

This is all speculation, of course, but that's the problem - no answers are being given about just how this is all going to work.

    cheers

I read that too - 80% AGAINST it.

    But only 2.5% FOR it.

And the 2.5% for it - do they really understand the implications?

The Turkish government already has something similar.

About a year ago they set up a special department that bans websites. They also use court injunctions.

Because of one video Youtube has been banned for the last 7 months and last week the whole of Blogger.com was banned when somebody took exception to just one blog. I'm just waiting for the BBC to disappear.

The worrying thing is that so many people have explained that all you have to do is filter the offending video or blog, but nothing changes. Then you get to thinking "What else don't they want us to see?"

I know what is happening. Your government found out I wanted to move back. It took them 4 years to get me out the first time so they think they can dissuade me from moving back by screwing up the internet. Nice try but no dice Australian government.

Even though I'm from the UK, this bothers me. Our government is great at picking up the daft ideas of other countries and running with them. The more lunatic an idea, the more likely it is to have our cash spent on it (which is why the curvature of bananas matters here, because some silly sod in Europe said it ought to). Half the time they don't even need to come up with a 'band-aid' of an excuse to justify their policies - cheerfully saddling the country with an open wound is considered just as acceptable.

If by some remote chance there's anything that non-Aussies can do to knock this one on the head, let us know. Otherwise it's only a matter of time before the government over here gets wind of the idea and decides that it sounds even cooler than letting dustbins stand stinking in the street for weeks ('because it's environmentally friendly and look, Europe's doing it too!'), or crippling our economy by spending a fortune on wars that have nothing to do with us ('we're keeping the peace!. And besides, America says it's a good idea').

Jeez, it's not as if our government doesn't have enough barmy ideas of it's own. I'm with you all the way.

Remember this people. The krudd man and his lap dog have already stated that "By The Year 2009, No Australian Worker Shall Have Any Choices"
and basically they have followed through on that and done it. The real worry is that the masses are applauding them for taking away their freedom to choose. This just proves what a flock of sheep we live among.
My prediction: If krudd - chairman of the committee says he'll censor the net, emails, sms network, or Australia Post you can believe him. This man is not just "in-bed" with the Chinese, he even speaks their language!!

Look, I don't care much for the political system in China either, but I speak the Chinese language since I'm of Chinese background.

What exactly is your problem with the Chinese language?

Frankly, I don't like the way you mix politics with culture, and I find it offensive that you're associating the Chinese language with negative connotations.

Try to think before you speak buddy.

Things like this set the movement towards more net censorship in other countries as well. It makes me curious towards how it affects business online.

Man Australia is f--ked up. I'm so sick of this crap hole...every year we lose more and more of our freedom. The Internet is the last thing the government hasn't tried to control since now.

And it seems everyone just goes along with what the media/government tell them...

The media doesn't want us to smoke, get drunk, eat fast food, have abortions but they waste their time with rubbish campagins to make gay marriage seem normal and countless other crap.

All they want us to do is be locked up in a cage...work work work until we die....

gee the future is looking really fun

Apparently the US government offers one (or is in the process of creating one?) in the name of free speach for countries who's governments see fit to treat their citizens like children.

Perhaps Rudd and Obama can discuss this next time they catch up?

The thing that annoys me most about this is that the Aussie government doesn't even realise what they're doing. They honestly think they're doing the right thing, but they just don't understand what they're playing with.

From what I understand there is a lot of opposition, and when it gets close, it'll be serious ammo for Turnbull.

Something like this can lose elections for brand new governments.
