Hello all. I am very excited about starting my affiliate marketing journey but have hit a snag. I don't know squat about building a website. I downloaded webpress and even set up a local host on my desktop to practice with before actually putting it on the web. I bought "Wordpress for Dummies" and watched several youtube tutorials also. I have not accomplished anything. It is totally greek to me. Any suggestions. I put a ad on craigslist looking for a tutor but no takers. Am I gonna have to take a course at the local college? Maybe an online course? What do I do? I have my business plan set up but just can't pump out my websites. I would rather not pay someone to do it as I want to make quite a few. I should point out that blogs are not in my plans and the book that I have doesn't talk much about regular websites. Any ideas? What should I do?

Thanks,
Stuart

There is a tonne of free information on the internet that will teach you how to put together a basic website There's also a lot of information on this forum!

The best way to learn is to try and start experimenting. Buy the domain you want, watch a few tutorial videos and read some guides until you know the basics. You really can't do anything wrong so just start to experiment and you will learn a lot quicker than you might think!

A lot of it depends on what you want to promote and how you are going to promote it. If you are promoting popular and well searched for products sometimes a one page website is enough. If you want a more elaborate site there are certainly options other than Wordpress.

I would start with some basic html, there are a lot of tutorials out there W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is a great place to start.

Stuart, I'd focus on learning how to use Wordpress as there are literally hundreds of free videos and written tutorials out there on how to use it. If you just give it a little bit of effort and focus, you should be able to learn it quickly. Even kids in elementary school have learned to set up Wordpress fairly easily, and if you can use a word processor like Microsoft Word setting up a basic Wordpress blog isn't that much harder.

Don't worry about the fact that Wordpress is a 'blog', it can be set up as a static website if you'd like. Too many people get tripped up in the fact that Wordpress is a 'blog', if you look at many 'regular' websites out there you'd be surprised to find out how many of them are actually WP blogs. With all the themes and functionalities that come with plugins and widgets, a WP blog can be almost anything you want it to be.

exactly, Andrew is perfectly right...if you have read online guides or viewed tutorials and still don't have a clue, then it means they weren't the right tutorials..for me, a good "how to" guide is super easy to comprehend and grasp the basics out of it...keep looking, it is the best way to learn and accomplish something

also, why not try websites that are already done and very easy to manipulate? or do you actually want to build a website from scratch?

It may also be a good idea to get a website already made (you can probably find some for free) at the start and play around with it a bit Learn how to change things, add things, delete things etc.

OK guys. I will keep trying. I have been playing with it for several days and the only thing that I managed to do was change a header on a wordpress theme. Most of the tutorials that I found focused on blogs and the others were just above my head. My sites will only be a few pages and I know exactly how I want them set up. I just haven't figured out how to do it.

@getsmartt - thanks for the link. I will try the tutorial.

If I manage to make any progress, I will let you guys know.

      Thanks,
      Stuart

I recommend investing in a course where you'll learn the ins and outs of Wordpress. The video tutorials on youtube are decent but if your really serious about starting an affiliate marketing business you MUST learn Wordpress! Just take it one step at a time and you'll get there.

Don't forget o install google sitemaps and all in one seo pack plug ins they are crucial!

The best way to learn wordpress is to go to WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here and sign up for a free wordpress blog. In that way, you can learn how to USE wordpress as that has exactly the same features as if you had your own wordpress hosted on your own server. Of course, the url will be whatever.wordpress.com instead of your own URL.

Reading books will work, but its slow and its hard to find a book that suits your learning style. So, diving into wordpress.com seems to be the fastest way.
