How To Customize the Twenty Ten Wordpress Theme

I have noticed a lot of posts about what are the best free themes and the answer is in my opinion the default Twenty Ten theme mainly because it works with just about everything and updates when Wordpress updates.

I wanted to customize this theme and spent hours looking through CSS style sheets etc until I found this.

Its free and its quite easy.

So what do you think?

Do you already use the Twenty ten theme?

Would you use it now seeing you can fully customize it?

    Hi Quentin,

Thanks for the video. I haven't used the 2010 theme yet, but I'll definitely be looking at it now! It looks really good!

I really liked the TwentyTen theme when I first saw it. I was already used to tweaking just about any theme I tried.

One thing I noticed is that whoever coded the theme was very sophisticated in how they used the various hooks, so customizing some things wasn't as easy as I thought it would be.

I got a tip from fellow Warrior Istvan Horvath about using child themes that took a lot of the anxiety away. Now I use a child theme to experiment on, rather than messing about in the original code. If I screw something up, it's easy to wipe the slate clean and start over.

Child themes and frequent backups will make your customizing easier...

      Edit:

Just had time to watch the video, and there's a link to a theme download (haven't checked that out yet) that creates the child themes for you. If you did like I did, and skipped the video, go back and watch it to see if what the maker uses will suit you.

I tried to watch it but the whistling drove me bonkers :-) had to turn it off.

But, The best way to customize wordpress is with the Headway Theme in my opinion.

When I customize a template I try to keep it as "SEO friendly" as I understand. So, when I saw that Twenty Ten Weaver adds it's css to the top of the source code I opted not to use it. (I'm not sure if we're using the same tool since I uploaded mine directly from the WP site)

From what I understand you want your source code to have as little before your content as possible. And as little CSS and Javascript in the header or within your content as possible, preferably loading javascript at the bottom of the page.

That's one of the reasons I choose to stick with plain ole Twenty Ten.

I, also, like to further customize my template by adding extra widget areas and page/post layouts so... I stick with creating my own child themes too.

Like all Chris Pearson themes, the Twenty Ten theme is clean, SEO friendly, and underpinned with rock-solid code.

I purchased Chris's Thesis theme a while ago, and it's great. However, there is a bit of a learning curve involved in using it, so if you aren't comfortable with at least a bit of techy stuff, I would stear clear of it.

I have recently started using the Socrates theme. It's easy to use, and SEO friendly, but not as flexible as Thesis. I would recommend this theme to techno-phobes.

    Heh...
I used the Twenty Ten theme since had appeared and I'm satisfied with it.
Also, recommend it to other people that have time to customize it.

    Good luck!

Does the 2010 put the raw CSS at the top of the page or merely a reference to an external CSS sheet? If it refers to a sheet, that one line won't make a difference. But if you have hundreds of lines of raw CSS and JS at the top of the page, that's less desirable...

"Twenty Ten" doesn't but the install of "Twenty Ten Weaver" I had did add all the custom CSS.

I loovvveeee the 2010 theme. All of my blogs get indexed in 4 to 48 hours with no backlinks (make sure your permalinks are set right and organic traffic starts to flow pretty quick after indexing). It's definitely my fav.

And I always recommend it to newbies because changing the header and background is so easy for them, and adding code or links to the sidebar is super easy as well.

    Wow Quentin! Good find.

I have finally been graduated from Dreamweaver up to WordPress (Just during the past 2days - it was time for me to enter the 21st century.) I was wondering how to make some of those changes, like change the color of the menu bar.

Now if I can just figure out how to... (Well I won't hijack the thread. I'll start another.)

    Thanks again.
