British vendors (and those selling in GBP): a quick question!

Hi guys,

When you're selecting your currency from a drop down box that lists currencies, if the currencies are written in words (rather than just a currency code), when looking for GBP would you look for:

- Pound Sterling

Or would you first look under "G"?

Or, would you prefer "British Pounds"?

What would you most likely look for?

Basically I'm adding new currencies to DLGuard, and changing the listing to words (it used to just list currency codes), and I want to make sure it doesn't confuse!

cheers
Sam

British Pounds would be fine. As would 'GBP', but I agree that being nearer the top of the list is an advantage.

      Hi Sam,

I naturally tend to look for GBP. Having said that from a sheer laziness point of view I agree with the above, British pounds would be easier to find.

Whilst I'm on...If you have one of those country bits to scroll down that has every country in the entire world on it, I suggest United Kingdom becomes Britain and the United States becomes America (North or South) that way we can both be nice and lazy.

That's an interesting question, because I've seen all those used.

As UK is usually listed near the bottom of a country list, next to USA, I find there is a tendency to scroll down without looking at the top of the list - so have you considered "UK Pounds Sterling"? Perhaps in addition to British Pounds or GBP.

Looks like British Pounds seems to be the most popular - thanks so much for everyone's input!

What I'm considering is having common currencies near the top:

    GBP
    USD
    EUR

...and then the rest in alphabetical order.

I used to use just currency codes, but now that Paypal are adding more and more currencies, some of them are very similar to each each, and could cause confusion just using the code. That's why I've opted for names.

Thanks again, I appreciate everyone's input! If anyone else has extra ideas, I'm open!

The GBP is a tricky one, since it can be called a few different things.

    cheers

GBP, plus listing the most common currencies at the top sounds like a good way to go to me

British Pounds might be popular, but GBP is the finance and banking industry standard code.

Brits (me included) might prefer British Pounds but internationally you would have thought people would look for GBP, and recognize it more readily.

Both are fine. I find most vendors use GBP

Interesting - so you'd actually prefer the currency code rather than a description of the currency?

    So:

    GBP
    USD
    EUR
    AUD

    ...instead of:

    British Pounds
    US Dollars
    Euros
    Aussie Dollars

    ...etc.?

It's easy to change it back to listing currecny codes rather than descriptions, if that's what most people are going to prefer?

And hi Norb, great to meet you! And I'm glad you've been enjoying DLGuard

      Hi Sam,

USD works well for those of us here in the States. US Dollars may be clearer for those folks in the free world.

Had no idea what GBP was until I read this thread...

You need to be careful here Sam.

GBP is the standard. When putting it in words however, I prefer Pounds Sterling or UK Pounds Sterling.

What I prefer though is not the issue. We are marketers on this forum, but buyers are not. So to make things clear to buyers, forget about bankers' and marketers' opinions and use the term 'British Pounds'.

British Pounds is not only the most popular choice on the thread, but is the term that most potential UK customers will understand when they see it. How the customer perceives this is obviously paramount.

Obviously don't abbreviate British Pounds to BP

      Just my thoughts,

      Jeff.

Maybe the Initials, then the Name of the Currency?

    Hi Jeff,

You raise and excellent point, and generally I wouldn't ask in a marketing forum about what people prefer simply because, as you said, online marketers and vendors are more likely to be familiar with different currencies.

Having said that, DLGuard is a product designed for marketers, and a lot of my clients are from the WF, so it's actually a really good way to get feedback without emailing my list

I can't believe I didn't think of that! Thanks so much for the fresh eye, EWGQDD! Best of both worlds!
