For the struggling IMers: Why not provide offline services?

(There has been plenty of talk on this, but I'd love to chip in)

If you're struggling with making an income with Internet marketing, why aren't you offering Internet marketing services to local businesses?

There is big money in it.

It can be good for a number of things:
  • Gaining capital for your online venture.
  • Doing it on the side of your usual Internet marketing.
  • Doing it full-time.

I do the middle option, it keeps my eggs in different baskets as they say...

Here's the thing:

Offering Internet marketing services to local businesses is indeed big money, but requires far less work than you might imagine.

Here is why:

SEO services are highly competitive online nowadays, and therefore they get cheaper and cheaper on places like the Warrior Forum.

SEO services in local areas can often lack competition. This means that low pricing isn't necessary at all.

Outsourcing, anyone?

Check this out. Search for "SEO packages" on Google and look at as many of the results within the first 5 pages that you can. Look at the kind of monthly prices that are being offered.

$500 per month, $800 per month, even $2000 per month.. depending on the packages being offered.

Even the smaller packages at around $300-$500 per month just involve a bit of on-page optimization, social bookmarking, and various other types of backlinking - the kind of things you can outsource for so cheap that your profits will be soaring.

You can offer a $500 package and outsource it for $100, by outsourcing to cheap IM services. There are plenty of cheap services available on the Warrior Forum, clickfive.net, and also smartersubmit.com - this is due to the competitive nature of such IM services online.

You do have to have a good look around and choose your outsources wisely - the more research you do and the more services you test out, the firmer your results will be.

When searching for "SEO packages" on Google, you can model your own website and prices based on some of those sites, and then start approaching local businesses, whether it be face to face or by writing letters and e-mails to them.

When you sell a package: a business pays you, you use a small portion of the money to outsource all of it, and then voila - all you're doing is project management.

So, if you're a new and/or struggling Internet marketer, you should start offering an Internet marketing service to local businesses ASAP.

Obviously, I have been very brief here and not gone into any huge detail, but it's intentional. This post is really to just get your juices flowing. If you want any further details then feel free to PM me any questions, as providing services to local businesses is something I do.

I will absolutely not try to sell you anything. I genuinely like to help those that need it.

All the best!

The problem with all of this "do offline work" jazz.... most IMers, especially those who are struggling to make money should not be charging others for IM related services.

I see it here every day, somebody who is clueless about SEO charging for SEO services or the jackwagons who think artisteer makes them a web designer.

These people ruin business for those of us who really do know what we are doing.

Everyone here would be crying like 2 year olds if they signed up for the $1,000 super guru course only to find out that it was a scam being run by somebody who hadn't made a dollar online so why is it cool to screw over offline businesses?

    Anything for a buck?

    I'm all about that bass.

Sorry but you are wrong. I am not an SEO expert but I can take ANY local business to the #1 results for all relevant search terms. This does not mean I know how to rank #1 (I do, but I'm lazy) for 'Make Money Online' or similar. Now, I would say that being #1 for all related keywords is easily worth $500 to $2000 per month to a local business that isn't some junk shop. What I've done in IM is irrelevant in this case.

It's much easier to make money online.

If you can't do it online, you have no business doing it offline for others...especially for a fee.

Other people's livelihoods are not the place to play around and try to figure it out.

Online you have a lot of options where/what/why to work in Internet Marketing.
Offline..you are limited to some simple things that doesn't let you expand more...it's more concentrated...on the internet everything is...let's say unlimited.

Also..good money comes from here, not offline. (of course, if you don't have a big business)

I think that one of the other areas that many don't like to mention is that local businesses tend not to have much money and they get bombarded by emails all the time offering SEO services so they are generally really sceptical unless you can spark a relationship with them and win their trust.

    That's my experience

Trust me on this - a lot is going to depend on your initial contact with them. You preferably want to get them on the phone at some point before the sale, where you can sound confident, knowledgeable and helpful when talking to them.

In addition to that, you need to target the right businesses. Ideally, you want to pick businesses that are already advertising extensively and have a fairly sizable advertising budget, but are not seeing a return on their investment. You can't just randomly target businesses on the street and expect to get clients, you have to market to the right businesses that have the wherewithal and desire to market on the internet! By doing that, half your battle is already won.

Doesn't the question pretty much answer itself?

    It should.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Also, I am not sure how I can me competitive with SEO services. Many are far less than those examples you've quoted. I cannot compete with them unless I resort to spammy forum profile and useless blog comment backlinking and this is something that I will definitely NOT arrange for clients. The last thing I want is a lawsuit a few years down the road if Google deindex them.

Even if I've covered my rear end, it won't necessarily stop the hassle of being taken to court for it.
A lot is going to depend on how you position yourself. You do not want to get lumped together with the dubious bargain-basement services out there who compete predominantly on price. You want to establish yourself as the "go-to" expert in a small niche (i.e. lawyers, doctors, realtors) and not be everything to everyone.

You should NEVER ever guarantee specific placement in the search engines, and as long as you don't do that then your chances of a lawsuit are significantly diminished. It is important to set clear expectations at the outset with the client, and not just promise the world in order to get the contract.

The answer to your question is because I do not live in USA, but in a country where people have no money and the best you can get is $10 a day chopping logs. Also, isn't "doing it offline" basically = getting a job? So, if I would have to answer that, I would say that in many places you can't get a job due to crippled economy.

My answer would be: so, if you are dumb (lazy, uneducated, ignorant, whatever) enough and not able to make your business to work, then go "out" and screw up other businesses, too? That's what you are saying?

However, fellow warrior Michael Hiles has a way more eloquent version for you:

What a great idea. I know I'd struggle with brain surgery - I don't know why I never thought of just charging to tell wannabe brain surgeons how to do it instead.

I expect this kind of thing contributes a lot to the accidentally lobotomized website quota.
