I've seen blog competitions that are either entered via following on Twitter of liking on Facebook.

What I don't understand is how they gauge the entrants?

Also if you've ran one and have any other tips I'm all ears

I am bumping this because I am very interested in the answer. I have seen a few really good ones where the prizes were unique services, and I wondered how they work.
