Good keywords

hi Guys... I am a new member here and I am trying my hand with IM, I am starting out in the next couple of days with my first project and I wanted to subject you experts (and also newbies like myself ) to a quick question.

For sites you have that are making a little money. what was the competition and global monthly searches on your keywords and how much SEO did you have to do to rank page 1-2 on Google for those keywords?

    Using the tools shown above would greatly help you. As we all know good and competitive keywords is one of the key for SEO. That's why you should choose keywords that you think is good and competitive. Next, is to produce article that is keyword-rich. Now that you have a good set of keywords, turn them into a content.

      Completely agree with this, it's good advice.

      I would also add that it's important to be sensible when choosing which keywords to target. If you are going to try to make it to Google page 1 for a keyword such as 'make money', you're either going to have to be very good at SEO, very patient or very rich to make it happen, certainly if you want it to happen reasonably quickly.

      Don't underestimate the power of lesser-searched keywords. It's better to rank on page 1 for a keyword that attracts 9000 monthly searches than to rank on page 400 for a keyword that attracts 9m monthly searches IMO.

    Depends, if i want to get my blog post ranked on 1st page in Google, with very little effort then i go with competition under 10,000 with monthly searches around 900-1000.
    If i don't mind building backlinks, then i pick a keyword with competition around 40,000-50,000 and search volume 3,000-6,000 per month.

      I Agree with you Margo24 on this. My keyword has around 7-9 thousand searches monthly with few competing pages. I don't mind about the SEO, in fact it is just as rewarding to see your SEO effort rank you higher and getting the $$ I believe (still waiting for my first $ from SEO ) but seeing my page go higher and higher is very very rewarding.

    here is the guide that i use when picking keywords:

    EXACT monthly search volume: over 720
    -----------------------------
    "keyword" Competition under 10,000 with quotes
    allintitle: keyword Competition under 1000 with ALLINTITLE

    there are other factors to consider; you want to check the first page on google.
    You want to find out your competitors backlink amount, page rank, keyword in title, keyword in description and keyword in domain. I wrote an extensive guide here:

    To quickly gauge your competitors backlink amount and page rank i use SEO quake. Its free and its a very useful tool. I wrote extensively about it here:

      good point, backlinking is the second phase of Internet Marketing but keyword research is the bedrock of I.M.

      I rather spend a month or 2 easily ranking for terms like "side plank exercise" that get a relatively moderate but consistent traffic flow than spending years trying to rank for "best exercise".
