Looking for a Traffic Spike? - Try HOT NEWS Blogging!

We have just had a big boxing contest in the UK ... Harrision vs Hayes for all you pundits.

Searching for the highlights on Google I notice a number of blogs have done features and are ranking well for a variety of search terms based around the fight.

Not sure what the quality of the traffic is like but it seems to me that these sites are enjoying a nice spike in short term traffic just by posting on a hot news item.

Clever strategy me thinks, although I am not sure wether it applies to my niche sites.

Does anyone employ this technique to get traffic?

    Speed is the key.

Also, it helps if you can submit your item to social bookmarking sites as quickly as possible. People will only be looking for news for a short while, then traffic will taper off, but if you can stay on top of things, you can do fairly well.

    All the best,

    Hey John,

    In a word, yes.

I've used this technique quite recently, talking about Facebook marketing and relating it to 'The Social Network' movie. You can read the post here:

Not only is it good in terms of search engine traffic but it works very well in terms of the social sites too.

My friend Phil actually creates videos on trending topics and posts them to Youtube to get a rise in traffic. Some topics stay around for a while, others fizzle out, but all get traffic.

So yeah, it absolutely works. The traffic quality varies, depending upon the topic or event and how well you can weave them together.
