Facebook releases EMAIL!

This just in... Facebook has announced it's new email system is actually going to be better than email.

It's going to consist of 3 key parts:

Zuckerberg outlined three features that will define Facebook's new offering, which Zuckerberg called a "modern messaging product": Seamless messaging, conversation history, and a social inbox for "filtering exactly the messages you want to see."

It's going to tie together instant messaging, SMS messaging, email and chat.

And here's the part that has the most interest:

Facebook is going to filter by your friends.

So you know those IM gurus sending you tons of crap? Bye bye!

It's gonna be interesting.

Now if you have to log in to your Facebook account to get emails and you can combine SMS with Facebook, it's going to get interesting.

How are we going to monitize this folks?

Peace,

Harlan

    Harlan,
It'll definitely be interesting to see what this evolves into.

Zuckerberg said he wasn't directly aiming for Gmail...and it' still a little unclear what this is.

He mentioned that it will be very simplified and allow attachments.

Sounds like they will do filtering based on Facebook setup too...

The big question will be if they can actually use this to cut down on spam, or if Facebook will actually become the new spam target.

Yes but does it link to your friends and sort by them?

Does it come with a user base of nearly half a billion people who log in nearly every day?

The video by Facebook's engineer explains it nicely.

Some of your contacts prefer email based communication. Others prefer
SMS. Still others like chat or IM.

And again, sometimes, you're at your computer, at others you're out with
      your cellphone.

Making interactivity across media and devices seamless is what this is
about... enhancing the experience of communication, and getting technology
      out of the way.

I kind of like that, conceptually.

Of course, given Facebook's penchant for blithely changing privacy rules to
fit their current needs, the way I'll probably be letting my contacts know about
      this will be

"For everything you want to tell me... that may be seen by EVERYONE"

I don't care what my friends like. My messaging choice is based on my needs. If I need an immediate response, I'll text them, actually I'd probably call them.
If I'm sending a long message, it will be by email.

Email has already died several times over the years.

Internet Marketing has also died quite a few times, or so I've heard

Personally, the big FLAW in Zuckerberg's plan is that his system is a "closed shop".

In other words, I presume you'd have to be on Facebook to receive and send messages.

This isn't true for email. I can send an email from Gmail, to someone on Yahoo! email or MSN email or whatever other email service the other person uses.

So from a marketing / publicity point of view, the announcement is a stroke of genius.

However, I really doubt it will replace, or be "the end of" email.

Think about it like this. The Private Message system on THIS forum could potentially replace email.

    Would it?

    No.

    For lots of reasons.

Even with Facebook's 500 million members, that's a small MINORITY of the world.

(Although admittedly from an Internet Marketing point of view, a SIGNIFICANT minority )

Of course, they're probably going for eventual world domination like Google... but until then...

      Apparently not.

The Facebook.com email address is optional. You can send and receive email from
any other service, and it will be pulled into Facebook's messaging system.

You would need to use Facebook, though. And navigating the system with mobile
apps or on any computing device would let you use the functionality.

However, I really doubt it will replace, or be "the end of" email.
It is supposedly going to INTEGRATE email - into a slew of communication
options, making it easier for folks to use the one they prefer (or can access
at the moment) to connect with people one-on-one.

They aren't touting as the "end of email" - they're calling it the "future of
      communication"

      All success

P.S. - Can you tell I'm fascinated by this concept? I just posted 3 replies on

Wasn't Google Wave going to revolutionize the way we communicate as well?

Right up until the point Google gave up on it...

I may be a skeptic... but there's a REASON email has survived for so long ("long" in Internet terms).

That's because it's an OPEN system.

I predict FaceBook will have SOME success with this (especially in contexts where email is more "chatty", i.e. among personal buddies), but it will certainly NOT replace email in general.

It may perhaps replace SMS messages for young cellphone users, but I don't think cellphone providers will be too happy with that.

          Interesting quotes on this:

Why are people excited about FB e-mail? Is it really a Gmail killer?
E-mail was always an ad-hoc social-messaging tool and now Facebook will be making it completely social by mixing it with social graphs, news feed, and Facebook page integrations. Yes, I'm very excited about this.
--Brij Singh, founder and CEO, Apptility

I wouldn't switch from Gmail to FB mail outright -- no way -- but I'm excited about it. I'd definitely sign in but would need the following to even consider a complete switch: Unlimited space (really unlimited -- no 7GB cap as in Gmail), phenomenal freedom and ease in aiding a switch (import mails/contacts from Gmail seamlessly, use multiple IDs with aliases, etc) and a user interface that is better than Gmail.
--Karthik S, head of digital strategy, Edelman India

I'm a bit curious about the product, but not excited. There's too much hype, and that sometimes can mean the product isn't all that great. FB would need to have some really good features for me to stop using Gmail as my primary id. Most of us moved from Yahoo mail only because Gmail was in a sense a "quantum leap".
--Aditya Sanjit, creative analyst with a multinational internet company

A comprehensive e-mail system that integrates messaging with contacts would be a huge feature as one does not have to move from a social-networking application to another email system. I would keep both. If I were to quit Gmail I would miss its superb search facility.

I don't think it will be a 'closed shop'. Think sideways for a minute.

Facebook already has an internal mailing system so this, to be new would have to be a fully functioned messaging system meaning that you, as a Facebook user, could send a message to someone who isn't registered on Facebook and the message would arrive.

The point I want to make is that its not an 'either or' choice. I have a few gmail accounts for differing purposes. I have a yahoo mail account too. My main e-mail accounts are my ISP account and the one on my main domain name which forwards to my ISP account. I occasionally send people PMs in fora and send messages on Facebook. Way back 12 or 13 years ago I had a hotmail account as well as that was the first web-based service I came across.

So I may or may not get a Facebook email account if I see there are marketing advantages from having one. That doesn't mean I will dump everything else.

I heard that the new search function with Bing will also tie into your account, if you are logged into Facebook.

Your search will provide relevant sites AND take into consideration if any of your friends 'Like' one of the search results. The 'Likes' will determine search results and position.

Sounds like between that and this new email feature, we should all go crank up our Facebook friends and get tone of 'Likes" on our sites.

I don't see the big deal.

MSN, Yahoo, etc. already has most of that combined. The only thing different is being able to filter between FB friends and non friends. But that's not a big deal and can be done already by using filters. Gmail, Hotmail, etc could easily add an address book filter.

Not to mention if your my friend already, I'll just post to your wall or send an internal message. Which we don't need to be friends for internal messages anyway.

My interest in this will largely depend upon privacy. I have no interest in this if I have "invite" people to my facebook in order to email them. I have TONS of emails in my gmail account, some that I consider friends and don't mind that they see my facebook and A LOT that I do buisness with that I have no reason to show them my facebook. So if I am forced to "invite" or "friend" people in order to email/chat with them, no thanks, not interested.

From facebook (detailing there new system): "Control who can send you messages through your privacy settings." (Facebook Messages | Facebook)

    I guess they want to add another "clearinghouse" feature to their system, so they can gather even more information about you, and guess what, it does not disappear, it stays with you forever;

"Like other e-mail systems, the Facebook messaging system will now save a conversation history, which executives said could maintain a sort of oral history. "Imagine you have the entire history of your conversation from 'Hey, nice to meet you, want to get coffee?' to 'Hey, can you pick up the kids."

"Five years from now, a user can have this full rich history with your friends and the users around you," Zuckerberg said. " (Facebook Revamps Messaging System | News & Opinion | PCMag.com).

How would you like to have five years of your conversations in the hands of someone else?

    Problem.

How are they going to get me to switch to it?

Let's be honest, I'm 20 years old (barely, I mean, my BDAY was a few days ago) and as a everyday computer user, I don't really see why I'd make the change.

My email sorts through spam just fine, I only get emails from people I want, and FB lets me chat with people that I'm friends with.

Only reason why i'd ever get in on it? Is if all of my friends did, but I dunno, I don't see why they would either.

Wonder how this'd effect list owners if it became big though, then they'd have to add you as a friend to receive emails right?

Note: I do use Facebook, a lot actually, but don't really see the point of the new email thing.

I guess people will put up with it if they feel the experience is better with Facebook compared whatever they are currently using. We've seen such switches already, from AOL to Hotmail, from Yahoo to GMail, from ... MySpace to Facebook ...

Bottom line, people will decide, and Facebook are in a good position to sway them, but nothing is guaranteed.

And as for what would be the marketing opportunities, I guess it depends on the success. If it works, marketers will probably have to deal with Facebook algorithm and filters in a similar fashion than how they are dealing with Google algorithms and filters.

All this will do is strengthen that connection because they can feel safe knowing that only people they allowed into their group will be "facemailing" them

NO Facebook itself does not come with a reachable base of 500M its just not possible as 1 person online however if there were say 2 of you then there that might be possible honestly Harlan is a marketer but KittyHarlan loves cats but he must be active within the realm to allowed to live there!

You see my take on this is everyone is worried about the selfish concept of how can i use this to make my millions (fair enough for sure) but what needs to be focused on is simply this.
Zuckerburg is in this for his empire think like him and use him after you understand how he is doing it. He has the biggest empire of socialnetworkism on the planet hands down and everyone is worried about why this wont work?
Where is the positivness in anyone here (maybe even me after this post:p) but honestly just look at it for a second MArk wants everyone to be online and he wants to make the money because he has a score to settle with who I have no clue. Look at your sales funnel for a second you used to have to dump the people in the top and twist them down to the spout at the end well now there are 2 holes for all to go into.
Think about a car oil goes(facebook) in one place and gas (the rest of the internet) into another and they both go into one place (your sales funnel) and then come out the exhaust (hopefully into your bank and their happiness)

Notice to all who are going to critique that above! it is not perfect nor intended to be. It is however, a simple stimuli to provoke some thinking as to what can be done with the new tool at your disposal:

This was expected. It is also the most logical step. The number one benefit for FB, at least is to keep 400million users on FB all the time. Everything else is gravy, really. Just as an after thought though, marketers will still find a way to send you a lot of 'cr*p'.
