Good PR article directories bring in loads of traffic - in most cases immediate. In addition, comment and involve yourself in at least 5 forums with signature links and post in them daily.

Well the fastest way to drive traffic is through paid traffic like PPC, PPV, and things like that. But it does cost money.

Then you can do link building as some of the others were saying. Spend time building relationships with people and you'll get somewhere.

Mukul has given you some pretty good suggestions. Pick 2. No more than that. Do those two until you are seeing success. Then add on a couple of other traffic sources and build. Too many people try to do too much and end up not accomplishing anything.

My top two sources of traffic are Article Marketing and Forum Marketing...

Between my top 3 websites, I have so far received 400,000 unique visitors and 5 million page views in 2010...

If you can create information that people want to read and are happy to have read, you can always get traffic, even with a simple forum answer like this one.

The things mentioned above are good methods to generate traffic. Personally, I have been generating traffic by backlinking. Usually posting to some article directories. And now, the social networking sites are helpful in generating traffic to websites. You can also do blog commenting and forum posting to generate more traffic.

Hope this personal experience would help you!

For most newbies, the cost of simply buying traffic is a little daunting, especially if their salespage doesn't convert well. I would always recommend producing good articles and submitting them to various directories. Ezine Articles is always a good place to start.

I also convert my articles to video articles and submit those to video sharing sites too.

I would, however, highly recommend doing some research into effective SEO techniques as getting an organic high ranking in the search sites is always going to bring high levels of traffic. Also, the correctly targetted keywords will find you the buyers, rather than the lookers.

Just ACT, you will learn from trial and error.

When I first started generating traffic I didn't have the slightest clue what I was doing. I just followed some backlinking advice and by doing I slowly started to understand how it works. Look up or purchase a traffic strategy and stick with it, in the beginning you won't understand a thing but if you keep practicing and experimenting you'll be a traffic PRO before you know!

Just remember to get in the game you have to start now!

Backlinks do work as well as SEO-oriented articles. It depends ultimately on your website and what it stands for. If you have incorporated a blog into your sales page (granted your main page is an online shopping portal), keyword-laden articles in the blog can help you generate traffic.

In my opinion one of the most effective ways to get traffic is to rank #1 with your desired keyword(of course this must be high-traffic keyword). There are countless of ways to generate traffic but ranking #1 with a keyword that brings free traffic from Google + other search engines is the best in my opinion. At least I started my IM journey with backlinking and this technique has done wonders for me and for other IM-ers.

    Quick Checklist

    1. Extensive keyword research - if you cant afford Market Samurai or Keyword Elite then you can use free Google Keyword Tool
    2. When you used the Google tool then you didnt get the top 10 competition overview of your chosen keyword - I use SEO Spyglass(even the free version is very useful)
    3. If you have chosen your keyword and confirmed that the SEO fight is winnable then start backlinking with 100% keyword anchor text(always use the same keyword in your anchor text)
    4. There are lot of backlinking techniques - blog commenting, profile linking, buying textlinks etc. - to start with you can use SEO Spyglass to find out the backlinks your competitors have and use the same ones if possible

    Good luck!

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed my list.

I will disagree since all traffic not equal. Video works on some, Articles on others. You can keep trying 2 sources, but could be hitting a bring wall OR spending 10 times more effort then another source. You need to try many sources and find what works for your site. If you have seem my Traffic Marketing Intensive, you would know that not each site has the same customers and same traffic sources, find yours.

I have not see your Traffic Marketing Intensive and while I am certain it is brilliant, I still would emphasize that people not add too much to their plate when they are new. It's nice to suggest that someone can concentrate on 10 sources of traffic at once and test them all to see which ones work the best, but for most people new to the game they have neither the time nor the skills required to master 10 different sources of traffic all at once. They will fail to adequately test which will work best in their market and for them personally. That's why I suggested starting with two. Get good with two and then start adding to that. The list you have is an adequate starting point...it's nothing novel, but provides a good list of tested methods from which to chose and start the process.

Before I can get ranked in the search engines well I rely on niche related message boards to drive targeted traffic. When I first started this was how I discovered that affiliate marketing could be so powerful. To this day I still argue that niche specific forums can be your bread and butter during slow times.

    short version....always works
    critical: keyword research and targeting
    your own domain and hosting
on page seo (not that hard, very beneficial)
    highly relevant fresh content
quality backlinks (relevant to site of course)
    then....articles, press releases, social bookmarking,
    forums.

sounds like a lot, but not if you work it gradual and steady,
then can ramp things up with out sourcing.

secret tip... the more effort put into keyword research and targeting, the bigger
    and faster the results.

    p.s.
don't worry about not targeting the hot, high traffic keywords....start with the attainable ones first, and in time you will own many of the sought after ones as well.

    patience..

Link building for SEO and direct traffic purposes is the most successful. The more varied and constant your links the better your result.

Some highly effective link building methods I use are:

    Article Marketing
    WEB 2.0 Links
    High PR Blog Commenting
    Profile Links
    Forum Thread Links
    High PR Gov/Edu Links

Posting high quality articles on article directories, social bookmarking, microblogging, blog commenting, forums, and other social media means. With all your links showing up online, you'll get the amount of traffic that you're looking for.

However, remember not to spam especially in posting comments since you will lose credibility and may only cause people not to visit your site. Also remember to be patient as you do all of these.

There are a lot of ways to attract traffic to your website, but the best proven way is to tap into already built networks relevant to your niche.

For example, if you're in the IM niche, and you create a product that a lot of people would find useful, you can approach a list owner in the IM niche and offer to do a joint venture.

This way, you get a massive amount of traffic at once, like a really big chunk.

This is why most the online marketing guru's focus on doing product launches, and just outsource S.E.O.

One way to start to drive traffic is with blog commenting

      Tip #1: Get alerted!

If you know who the top bloggers are in your niche, you can get traffic from commenting on their posts or pages. You've probably also found out that if you are too late in finding their post, your comment will be buried at the bottom of the page...

And, unless readers are really interested in what 50 other people have to say, it is usually unlikely that they will scroll down far enough to see your comment, let alone click through to your site.

So you need to get yourself alerted the moment they post. Do this by finding their RSS feed, and adding it to some form of desktop feed reader. AlertBear is a good (and free) choice.

I know, you could just as easily subscribe via email or other format, but these tend to have a fair amount of delay between the bloggers new post, and you being notified. With a feed reader that is always running, you can drop everything the moment the alert comes (assuming you're online), rush over there and leave your comment.

Depending on the post, and what you say in your comment - this has the potential to bring you a mountain of traffic overnight.

      Tip #2: No spamming.

Yep, there is software out there that seemingly makes blog commenting a piece of cake. I mean, it can post to thousands of blogs within minutes - what more could you want? Do you want google to see that unnatural activity.

Well, unfortunately this tactic rarely works. Unless the blogs posted to are on auto-approve, your comment is very unlikely to pass the spam filters, or get published.

Not only that, but even if your comment makes it through - lame, generic comments rarely interest people.

      Tip #3: Be helpful.

Sounds like an obvious piece of advice, maybe. But - sometimes impatience takes control, and when you come to post a comment, all you want to do is post any old sentence with a link to your site so you can move onto the next blog.

The tip here is to actually take the time to read the post you're commenting on. Then post great, helpful and relevant advice.

And something else -- use your real name as the commenter. Don't listen to those who advise using a keyword as your name to get backlinks. First of all, Google is on to this tactic, and devalues this kind of link, and second, the comment will probably be marked as spam by the blog owner. They'll be thinking that the only reason you commented was for that backlink.

You want your comment to get published. It's awful to go through all that effort each day to find that 50% of your comments were deleted.

If you're looking for a compelling link to your site, find blogs with the 'Comment Luv' plugin enabled. This can get you a lot of traffic by itself, as every time you post new content to your site (assuming your blog has a feed), the comment you left will update with the title to your new post.

So in summary, use your real name, post helpful advice, and don't be tempted to spam.

Comment on high traffic blogs. Aim for quality rather than quantity. Build a brand for yourself and get your name recognized as an expert.

Use these tips, and along with patience and consistency, you can build a lot of traffic and high quality, qualified visitors eager to hear more of what you have to say.

I think it is best to use and combine as many different sources--such as those mentioned so far--as is practical. I also think that scale is very important, and that whatever you do, do it on as great a scale as is practical for you. I have recently been experimenting with article submissions and have found that massive article submission alone can have a profound effect in generating a substantial, directed traffic flow. However, the traffic increase does not appear to last and drops off very soon after article submission decreases.

Wow......I guess you know by now that it's not how you generate traffic, but which method should I choose. Honestly I don't want to get into saying which is better or choose this method over that method. My advice to you is sit down and focus on one technique. Become a master at it until you can do it with your eyes closed. Once you are pretty comfortable with it, go on to the next method. Trying to many different methods at once can actually cause you to loose focus, loose momentum, and eventually give up.

      -Article Marketing
      -Social Media Bookmarking
-the Online Directories (are an extremely powerful way to get back links pointed to your website and will help you generate high traffic!)
      -Email Campaigns
      -Google Adwords
-SEO: optimize your webpages so search engines can index your pages properly! This is very important!
-Twitter: another way to generate high traffic!

I don't doubt that, but the OP sounds like a beginner who hasn't the slightest clue how to write effective PPC ads, discover the proper keywords to use, segment ad groups, and test and track a campaign. You really don't want to tell a rank newbie to start off with PPC when they don't have the slightest clue how to use it - it'd be easy for them to lose a lot of money when they're brand new to this and don't have any one to guide them.

If you're a beginner and really new to internet marketing in general, I'd suggest starting with free traffic, since you're risking nothing except your time and you can afford to get things wrong initially without losing your shirt.

If you are new to building websites and do not have hosting and domain(s) yet, then I'd suggest starting with article writing and also video creation as this will enable you to direct link to an offer (caveat - you'll need a top-level domain for this, but a 99 cent .info domain will do just fine for this application).

The best long-term strategy for building traffic is article marketing, but it must be done right.

Create lots of unique articles with various links back to your sites and your other articles (link wheeling) to rise in the SERPs and generate loads of direct traffic.

Over time, a lot of your articles will naturally (relative to quality) be picked up by other webmasters, therefore giving you more links and more direct exposure to website.

Essentially, you are building a foundation for other webmasters to promote your site

    Hey ylhsiao,

You've received some pretty good advice, but I know when I first started in Internet Marketing, reading great traffic generation techniques like the ones above is awesome and exciting. BUT when it comes down to actually taking action and generate some traffic I found myself overwhelmed and confused on where to begin and which one to use first.

So...my honest advice to you, as a newbie (if you are one) is STAY AWAY from paid traffic for now and especially stay away from...Google Adwords!

And instead focus your efforts and time with FREE SIMPLE traffic methods doing:

    1. Forum marketing - if your niche is "internet marketing" then here at the Warrior Forum is where you should be 24/7, 365 days a year! Just be active, positive, and provide value in all your responses and questions. Oddly enough this will get people clicking your signature link, singing up to your opt-in page, and eventually purchasing your product or an affiliate product you promote.

    2. Article marketing - I know, know...everyone is saying it's not working and not effective anymore but truth is it still WORKS and is free.

Just focus on submitting ONE article a day to Ezinearticles.com FIRST, wait for it to be approved, and then submit that same article (with a little rephrasing to avoid having Google think it's duplicate content, which will bring your search engine rankings lower) to goarticles and articlesbase.

    3. Blog commenting - Go on the TOP blogs in your niche and be the FIRST to comment on a blog post, making sure your comment is valuable and contributes to the post.

Just focus on these three for now and master them.

DO NOT underestimate the simplicity of these methods, because from my experience and from many of the most successful marketers today, simple techniques like these when executed bring amazing results.

So, be consistent and persistent in your actions. And DON'T GIVE UP!

Within a couple weeks you should have a decent number of subscribers on your list to market to or sales if you choose to drive your traffic straight to a sales page.

Now stop reading this long thread and go TAKE ACTION!

If you have a lot of money to spen you can consider using ppc such as google adwords. It costs you money but consumes less time.

If you have some time on your hands and also some money you can try out SEO. You also require patience.

If you have a lot of time and willing to put in hard work, I would say article and forum marketing are one of the best ways to get started. You can include blog commenting in that.

After spending thousands of hours, producing over 500 videos on 2 different Youtube channels, writing hundreds of articles and blog posts, I have come to one conclusion. It all creates a TRICKLE of traffic compared to :

Lots of super-general information in this thread that will completely screw up any inexperienced marketer.

Before you worry about traffic, IMO, you should:

-know how to do keyword research (be able to target a niche, determine if there is adequate disposable income in said niche, then compare results vs searches vs commercial intent)

-know what you're going to do with that traffic when you get it (If you're gonna drive them to a pitch, do you know how to write ads? If you wanna put them on a list, do you know how to setup a decent autoresponder follow-up sequence or put out timely, useful broadcasts? Do you have a good freebie to give them for opting in?. etc)

-(if you're an inexperienced marketer) know your niche/market so as to be able to provide value on some level - be it free blog posts, forum posts, whatever - regardless of your marketing ablities

-know your resources (do you have patience/diligence to track stuff? do you have the time to test things? do you have the $$ to just hire somebody to do it all for you?)

When all else fails, I think many people focus on making $$$ in a niche too quickly. I know we all want to cash in, but before I started trying to make $$ in my niche, it was a big hobby/passion of mine, and I'd spent a long time on forums (this was before blogs really hit the scene) and had already established a name/credibility for myself. Then when I went to start selling stuff, even though I know nothing about marketing at the time, I was still able to sell and make $$, simply b/c I was trusted as a resource for info.

Now, everybody wants to hit it big quick, and they don't have the chops - either in the marketing world or the specific niche - to be able to do (or deserve) it.

If you're currently desperate to increase the amount of traffic you receive, here are some give surefire ways in a nutshell to increase your traffic starting from yesterday.

      1) Invest in good advertising with Search Engines.

Google's Adwords and Yahoo's Overture provide great advertising schemes that are very truly popular and assures great traffic. Although with this surefire way to increase your traffic would cost some money. While some would shy away from spending money to increase traffic, it is imperative in this case to do so because Adwords and Overture is the top surefire way to increase your traffic.

You could see for yourself the success this Search Engine advertising methods have reaped rewards for so many companies. Lots of site feature these advertising system and many have signed on to reap the benefits. Do not be left behind. Every penny is worth it with using Google and Yahoo's advertising.

      2) Exchange or Trade Links with other sites.

With exchanging links with other sites, both of you will benefit from the efforts both of you do to enhance your sites traffic. When one site features another sites link, they could provide one another with the traffic one site generates. The efforts are doubly beneficial because it would seem like both of you are working to generate more traffic. The more links traded with more sites the more traffic could be expected.

Exchanging links with other websites can bring a substantial amount of traffic if you choose your link partners wisely. Remember, you're better to have 10 links from sites that are prominently displaying your URL and driving traffic to it ' than 100 who just put your link on a page with hundreds of other links. In fact having links on your site to pages that include hundreds of links can hurt your search engine rankings, so be sure you're only linking to sites that are relevant to yours and that you honestly endorse. If you don't have time to spend looking for link partners consider hiring someone. For around $1.50 a link you can outsource this task.

      3) Use Viral Marketing.

Viral marketing allows you to spread the word about your company and product without any costs or if ever low costs only. This is a marketing method that can be quite sneaky; you can attach your company's name, product or link to a certain media such as a funny video, entertaining game, an interesting article or a gossip or buzz. With this method, people get infected with the creativity and entertainment of the medium that they will pass it on to many people.

      4) Search and use proper keywords or keyword phrases for your sites content.

Search Engines look for certain keywords that they would show in their results page. In doing so, having the right keyword and keyword phrase is a high requirement in ranking in high in Search Engine results. You could write your own content or you could hire someone to do it for you.

      5) Write Articles that can lead traffic to your site.

Submit articles to sites that would contain the same subject that your site deals in. If you sell car parts write press releases and articles about cars and car parts. Attach your sites description and services at the end of the article as well as the link.

Hope I could help a little.
