Balance between Paying For Content and making money?

OK, so I am not a very strong writer. I have three articles already on Associated content and they get about 1 view per day total. But since I am starting off in the IM business I don't want to spend a bunch of money on my site and then not be able to make money off that site. I understand that some money needs to be spent to make money, hence buying SOME articles and hosting and stuff. How do you guys figure out how much to spend on articles and stuff without going overboard?

I guess most of us just started with having paid for a domain and hosting package and that's not soooo expensive.

As for content... I'll tell you honestly, even if English is not my first (not even second) language, I was writing my blog posts, my articles (not for AC but for EZA), my AR email messages and even my report and tutorials.

I still do write (record) my products, especially in WP field because I cannot outsource that one. But I can outsource now the article writing. Now I am spending less and less paying for content - percentage-wise. <== THIS is very important! Not the absolute numbers. At the beginning, to get things going I had to spend a higher portion of the earning on getting content done. But I saw it as an investment. Heck, if I spend $100 and I get $200... that's a helluva ROI: 100%. (I used to be in financial service; you don't get anywhere such return!)

Talking about balance: today I may spend a lower percentage on content, although as an absolute number ($XXX) might be higher.

Also, don't forget the indirect, long-term effect of having content (in this case articles) out there: backlink, ranking, syndication etc.

It is with any other kind of business - online or off-line. How much you re-invest in developing your business and how much you treat as 'disposable income' it;s up to you. And it should be different during the lifetime of the business...

I agree with Istvan, you need to invest into your business. Starting from small investment will help you keep going and once you see income from your business, you will be able to invest more into content, traffic, etc.

I do look at buying articles as an investment. I was wondering where do you draw the line when you are setting up a new website? How many articles would you consider and investment?

In article marketing the key is keyword research. If you have your keyword research on lock you can easily turn a profit by outsourcing the article writing otherwise you may just be paying for articles that will never make a dime.

If you are going to invest in your business make sure to pick up Market Samurai. Its one of the best investments (one-time fee) I ever made and I highly recommend it for article marketers. Even if you can't afford it yet you can still sign up for the free trial and when it expires you still have access to a limited version of the software.

They All Told Me Making Money Online Was Just A Scam For The Gullible... Even Though I Was Already Pulling In $1k/Day. Now You Say My Resellers Can Not Make $1k/day But...

I picked up the trial of Market Samurai, and already I can see its worth every penny. Unfortunately I don't have enough money for it. But it will be one of my first purchases once I start making money. How many keywords would you suggest I put in each article? How many per page?

The only necessities are hosting and a domain. Nearly everything else you can handle yourself (for the most part). Once you get the hang of things, you'll know when to outsource.

Invest in only what you need, but don't be cheap and cut corners. You can get a couple of domains and a years worth of hosting for less that $100 at most of the big hosting options. This gives you 365 days to make $100 so you can renew your empire.

Article marketing, but don't want to write? Join one of the mega PLR sites that charge monthly, I sucked over 10 gigs of content out of one for $9.99... cancel account at the end of the month. You'll have more content then you'll ever know what to do with. Take all of that junk and give it a rewrite/polish... you can write well enough to do that.

Be creative and use your noodle, there are plenty of ways to make money without spending a lot of it.

Thats a good idea jason. I especially like the part about referring to my sites as my "empire" :-)
Do the mega PLR sites give you better PLR content that that free stuff floating around?
Also dont forget my site will be a computer site so the articles need to be written less than a year ago for most stuff.

If you having trouble writing (I do as well) then pay someone to do it for you. As a recent invenstment I paid a fellow Warrior $160 for 12, 1500 word articles. This particular writer is very high quality and well worth the price. I have paid another $20 for 10 500 word articles and recieved garbage. The trick to get a good return on your investment is to repurpose the articles many times over. Post them on Ezine first, them post them on different HIGH PR directories. Turn them into videos and Podcasts as well. You can get a lot of backlinks and traffic doing these simple repurposing of your content.

Keywords for your whole site should be limited to 12 (too many and your site isn't optimized for the SERPS). Optimize your articles for one, but work in the others IF you can do it naturally and unforced.

Stay away from the PLR stuff, use your money to hire a good writer and establish a continuing business relationship with one or two that perform well for you. In the long run you'll not only get their best work, ROI for your money, and they might even help you get your own writing skills honed.

Depends on where you are getting your free stuff from. Here is one of the ones I've used. You can see exactly what content they have available before you join. I think there is a $1 trial if you are really hurting... 24 hours of downloading madness.

I'm actually kind of an idiot for not setting up my own PLR resale site but it's something I just don't have time for. See... ideas, they are everywhere!

That would be great Clint, except for the fact that I am only going to have $140 and $70 is going to a year of hosting. I could get more, but I would rather I start see money coming in then pouring most of my cash into my site.
A PLR resale site sounds pretty good actually. That might be my next project :-)

Have you thought about trading services?

If you're not ace when it comes to writing and you can't afford to hire a writer either, find something you're good at and then trade services. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone to write for you in return for, say, backlinking perhaps?

    You get the drift.

Set up right it could be an easy passive income. Join a couple of other mega PLR sites, use that content to feed your site. Update once a week to keep it fresh.

Also, build a site that is better than the others. Better navigation, easier to find content etc... many of the PLR sites I've used kinda suck when it comes to actually using them.

Finally, post here a lot being the happy, supportive, take action guy who just so happens to have a PLR link in his signature. You'll get some bites since people are always asking about and looking for PLR. Build up your trust and rep and it's not long before others are suggesting you as the PLR goto guy.

Maintain at least 100 subscribers and it's an easy $1,000 a month at $10 a subscription or to make it sound really good, 1,000 active subscribers is $10,000 a month, $120,000 a year... Time to go enjoy the beach.

I think this might fall into the work smarter, not harder category of get rich quick schemes.

If it doesn't work, your out maybe $50 bucks start-up costs and some time, not a big deal.

OK, no more writing about this. I'm starting to believe my own hype. I should be selling this post as a $7 ebook

  • what it comes down to is your budget. you don't post all articles at once, want to spread them out. any investment is good for business and never worry about going overboard. you can go overboard on offsite marketing, interlink the offsite articles to the onsite articles

You can always outsource the writing part if you're not too comfortable writing the articles yourself. There are freelancing websites with hundreds of writers to choose from. You just have to choose well and make sure that you stick to the budget you have set for the project. Good luck!
