How is the support with HostGator?

by AFI

I know that most of the people here use HostGator as I've seen it mentioned a lot. I don't use HostGator, I'm normally happy with my host but today they've pissed me off.

So how is the support with HostGator? Do they respond within 10 minutes if you have an issue? What is their response time and up time?

Very happy. Live chat is very helpful and usually sort everything out for you. If live chat is up, you will get response very fast and get your things sorted.

I recently had my websites hacked and a very malicious code put on all my pages redirecting traffic from google and social networking websites. Hostgator worked effortlessly for 2 days resolving the problem asap.

All in all, hostgator support is second too none.

I really like them. I've used their support several times for queries and a few tech things (which were my fault anyway). Very quick and friendly.

I just joined Hostgator about 2 months ago, and needed help just last week - they responded almost instantly (well, within a couple hours to my email; instantly in live chat - and THEN... while I happened to be on live chat, a representative called me directly, and helped me immediately).

I love them, and just wish I knew about them sooner!

Well I won't be using them. They won't even transfer my sites from my old host! Screw that, I'm not moving 30 sites myself! All hosts are supposed to do that as a courtesy. Lame.

I am not sure why you feel Hostgator is lame because they will not move 30 accounts into a basic account.

I assume you are getting a baby croc account (because HG will move 30 for a resellers account). A Hostgator basic account runs around $10 a month. Hostgator will move one site for free with the basic plan. How can you expect them to move 30 when you are paying only $10 a month?

If you are purchasing a resellers account Hostgator will move up to 30 websites. However, if they are add on's they will all be moved together instead of into individual cpanels.

Very few companies are as generous as Hostgator when it comes to moving sites.

So please share the name of the hosting company you find that will that move your 30 sites into a regular account basic hosting account for free. Because I don't think you will find one.

Hostgator is an outstanding Hosting company.

I was actually going to get the business plan. You assume too much.

And my current host has moved me without charge. Amerinoc is their name. I am using their "baby plan" at $9.95/month. I've been with them since 2003. When I've bought sites, they've moved them for me too.

Not to much difference really. The business plan is about $12 a month. Why you would expect them to move 30 sites for $12 I am not sure.
I recently purchased Hostgator's resellers account and they generously offered to move 30 sites.

Regardless I would be interested to see if you can find just one reputable hosting company that offers to move your 30 sites for a basic or business type of plan for free.

Congrats on being with one of the very best hosts out there. Amerinoc (Phatservers) are awesome along with Cyberwurx who I expect you've heard of too. People talk about getting a reply to their support ticket within an hour or two as being great service, they've probably never experienced replies in 5 minutes or less.

You know why Hostgator get such a good rep here? Well, it starts off that they pay the highest affiliate commissions known, so you get a lot of people pushing them for commissions to start with. Then you get a ton of people signing up who have little to no traffic and their simple support questions are answered easily. They don't encounter any problems and jump on the 'Hostgator are awesome' threads.

Try running a Hostgator account with decent traffic and see how long their 'unlimited' bandwidth lasts before they tell you you're using too many resources or inodes and insist you upgrade.

Don't get me wrong there are many, many hosts out there who are worse than Hostgator, but there are some that are better. Finding them is the key because those that use them dont often shout about it.

I called Hostgator multiple times when I was hosted on another webhost and they answered all of my questions above and beyond the call of duty.

My webhost at the time was good but no where near the service Hostgator provided.

Yes I've been with them ever since they were called "SplitInfinity" and then they changed to PhatServers and now Amerinoc. They are THE best host out there in my opinion, but I just had an issue with them today so I was frustrated and made this post. I would never leave them.

They answer my support requests within 10 minutes no matter what time of day it is since I work at 3AM sometimes, they are always there via email support.

I even asked them today what makes them better than HostGator and this is what Chris Eastman told me:

"HostGator doesn't have all the permissions issues with plugins, because they run php as the user (security issue, leaves all of your files vulnerable if there's an exploit). And thus permissions never have to be set to make things writable."

And I believe that now because of the gentleman above who said he had his sites hacked. All of your sites are vulnerable on HostGator apparently.

Exactly, but no one here will understand that while they are either pushing for aff commissions, sending support tickets about uploading to the wrong directory and cant figure out why they cant see their site or running sites that get 10 clicks a day.

So, because Hostgator is paying the highest commission known, we have to bash it, even when we know HG is the best hosting provider for low budget marketers?

                  How lame is this?

And if someone among hundreds or thousands here using HG is complaining about his sites being hacked..what does this prove? Isn't it possible that the security hole was in a silly script/application he is using?

If HG is vulnerable and easily hacked...how many will be screaming right here on the WF everyday because of their sites got hacked?

Prior to a few months ago I would have waxed eloquently about the excellent service I've always received from HostGators online chat.

They are still responsive and get to you ASAP, and compared to other hosts they are great. I assisted another Warrior a few months ago who purchased some discount hosting and their so-called "live chat" went to an e-mail! And to this date I have yet to get a response (the issue was resolved by having her move to a proper host BTW).

Comparatively HostGator service is great. My only reason for being less that enthusiastic about recommending them is simply that in the last two months I've seem to have hit the bottom of the technician pool, to put it bluntly! Had some extremely simple requests that took ages to communicate to the tech, in one case it took almost 6 hours to get 6 seconds of work done.

But again this has just been recent - prior to this I've been very impressed with their support.

Yeah; they always seem to respond quickly. Not necessarily always within 10 minutes, but quickly enough that it may as well be ... if that makes sense

The important thing is they're cheap, reliable, fairly "generous" in their service offerings (space, bandwidth, etc), and when you do get a reply (again, it's always swift), their staff are knowledgeable in their responses, and quick to take action towards any issues or requests you have.

Honestly, if you search the Warrior Forum, I think there won't be as popular and highly-praised a host as them.

To be honest though, I'm not entirely sure where you get the idea that all hosts should transfer your sites as a courtesy.

I used to be a web host (back around 2001-2004), and sometimes would do this for my customers, but in many instances it was complete murder, even for me: crappily coded scripts that required additional PHP/Perl modules installing (which a lot of hosts will flat-out not accomodate, as it makes things too inconsistent across their servers, and harder work to manage), hard-coded "paths" in every file, etc.

I literally would spend hours doing it sometimes, and that was time I could've better used responding to my other customers and doing server maintenance, etc.

Anyway, the point is, it's sometimes hard to gauge how smoothly and quickly a single site is going to be to migrate - never mind 30 of them. Hosts have to draw the line somewhere, sometimes, or else face customers becoming too demanding, expecting too much, and spreading themselves too thin.

I'd wager a bet there's a lot of smaller, lesser-known hosts out there who will happily attempt to transfer all 30 sites for you. But you're paying them to host the sites, not maintain them and set them up for you. I wouldn't rule them out just on their reluctance to do this alone, because they're otherwise a very stable, solid, and hassle-free host.

Just my 2 cents, anyway, and I hope you have a good experience with whichever host you choose.

I just moved my network to hostgators seohosting.com package. I took a backup of my cpanels and they restored then for me free of charge. Then all I had to to was update the DNS for each domain and it was all done. The most pain free hosting move EVER!

Moving 30 sites for a new hosting account is not something a hosting account is "supposed" to do. Says who? It's a perk that you have gotten used to by exceptional service from your current host, excepting they've pissed you off recently. If you like what they do in general, why not just stay with them?

I have nothing but praise for them. Their customer service is excellent & very fast. Use the live chat on their main site, not through your cpanel though, I've found they're much faster on the main site's live chat.

You never know though, tell your current host how close you are to switching to Hostgator & see what kind of deal they can offer you. Most good businesses will work to keep their customers, especially in the current world financial climate, so you never know what could come of it to benefit both you & your current host.

If you're beyond that stage though, go for Hostgator - you won't be disappointed.

      Cheers,

Another positive review from me as well. I've always found them to be very helpful and the support is quite good. My only complaint is that some of the search topics can be hard to find. Compared to the cheap host I used previously, Hostgator is excellent. I did encounter problems with them before, no service is entirely perfect. But I always manage to get fast service at the main site's Live Chat. Up time for my sites is 99.9 percent, the .1 percent being that one time one of my sites won't load. I asked help from Live Chat when that happened and we got it fixed within the hour. Transferring hosts is a pain, but if you do decide to leave your current one, I think Hostgator would be a great choice. Goodluck!

I wouldn't leave a host I'd been pleased with for some time due to one mistake - and comments make me wonder what did happen there.

Expecting help in 10 minutes demands to have 30 sites installed for you is asking a bit much to me. HG may help transfer sites but that may depend on the type of site and on the type/level of hosting package you buy. When I add a hosting account I install my own sites...usually just download from previous host and upload to the new one.

Bottom line, though, is no one likes a diva. You'll get much farther with tact and understanding than with temper and demands.

Ordinarily I would agree hostgator support is good.
    webhostingpad.com is better.

I recently was doing some script installations for a well known marketer for a product launch. one script would render the optin code gobbly gook. I installed the same script on my own server-no issue. after spending more than 2 hrs with their support they said they fixed it it was a security setting preventing access or something. so I thanked them and hung up and asked the client to try to make a squeeze page. same issue gobbly gook. so I then took a camtasia video in which the client got a response "we can use it fine" Needless to say the customer has had to make other arrangements I would not touch them with a 10 foot pole I did however go to my own webhost and tell them how much I appreciated them:p

I have 100 blogs hosted on 2 hosting accounts at Host Gator. I outsource most everything because i am very good at planning (the vision) but not so good at the technical aspects of online marketing. I have had several issues over the last 3 years, and all I can say about the customer support at Host Gator is one word: OUTSTANDING!
I can tell you several horror stories, especially from JustHost, but Host Gator is simply the best IMHO.
On one issue, I must have asked 50 questions both by live customer support and by email, and they answered each question politely (never talked to me like an technical idiot), they got the job done for me, resolved my issues, and I was able to go in and do what needed to be done with their help.

Just to add on to what most people here have already said. HostGator support is fantastic! They are really knowledgeable and really really friendly!

At least all my experiences with them have been great so far!

I've only had two problems that I needed Hostgator support for and they solved them both rather quickly. The one thing I'm happier about than their level of support is the fact that I've only had to contact them twice.

They are the best when it comes to support and service quality in the industry as far as I know.

Every issue, they always sort out for you.

I host all of my sites with HostGator and have been doing so for years. Their customer service is top notch and the main reason I use them besides their good server speeds.

I use live chat support and get a nice support. Even they give technical support when I have a problem.

I had a problem with my server and they where hopeless, I have been with hostgator for years, their service is starting to slip.

I had 10 chat conversations explaining the error, tons of tickets later, the error was still there.

I then complained in a ticket and within hours it was fixed, they kept closing the ticket saying it was fixed, but it was obvious they had no idea how to resolve the issue, so they left it.

All it needed was a simple update of some software.

Hostgator was good, it's now slipping, quickly!

    Regards
    Owen

Chat function has always been best for only the most general account questions. When you use chat you are talking to a customer service rep - not a tech person.

If you have a billing question or something easy - chat is fine and fast. For any other problem, your fastest accurate support at HG comes through email contact.
