IM = Gold Rush Principle? :)

Correct me if I am wrong... But the more I get into IM - the more I see that the most successfull people in the IM - are the ones who build a product for other IM's and just sell it relentlessly...

Did you know who made the most money in the gold rush?

The ones who were smart enough to sell shovels

The same goes for IM- there are people who are trying to "find gold" in the Internet marketing and there are people who are smart and they selling shovels = how to make money programs, membership sites, link building services, seo software, ebooks... and so forth

It's time to be smart

OK, I am correcting you. You are wrong.

IM is a blanket phrase. It could mean selling memberships to a gym via a website, offering computer related services, or selling used panties on eBay.

You are most likely hanging around forums where most of those sellers are marketing IM instructional products and services. There is a whole world outside of the make money online niche.

With that being said, there is nothing wrong with selling shovels, if that is what you choose to do. Some people get a real high off of helping people. My wife is a school teacher. She teaches kids to read. I teach grownups how to prosper. I like selling shovels.

There are plenty of people in IM who only attempt to sell shovels to other Internet marketers.

But there are plenty of Internet marketers - usually the smart ones - who make a ton of money selling to all markets. I often write copy for these folks.

And up above I said "attempt," because there are so many fake-it-'til-you-make-it types in Internet marketing trying to sell broken shovels... who then have a hard time getting rid of their crummy inventory.

      Cheers,

I know that you said "many", but just be careful not to lump all info-marketers into the broken shovel fake it til you make it category. Some of us provide useful and legitimate sales and marketing lessons.

Harvard University is an example of a business that only sells shovels, as is any college. There are many of us online shovel salesmen that have customers making more money than a typical Harvard grad. I take great pride in knowing that I played a role in that.

I did say many. I sell shovels too. And I learn a lot from shovel-sellers.

But in my 13 years in IM, I've seen many, many, many fake-it-til-you-make-its as well

          Cheers,

Agreed. The real thing to keep in mind is solving a problem with a your product or service and delivering real VALUE. If you are selling IM shovels or anything else.

I really love the analogy of selling shovels because I feel the imporant things are the shovels: The lower level, proven techniques that have been proven to work, and will work into the future. However, with a shovel, you do need to apply the effort to make it work.

Compare this with perhaps, an "automated digging machine" that will do everything for you. Note that you might be able to have it run on "autopilot", but you will still need to give it direction and fuel, something most sellers of "autopilot" products never mention, or that when the machine runs out of fuel, it is pretty much useless.

Not so, with primary tools such as shovels...

Of course, there is a fundamental question about whether IM is Internet Marketing, or Information Marketing. For myself, I prefer the latter.

Actually, the ones who made the most money long term were the syndicates and companies who came after the easy money was gone and really worked the mines with knowledge and technology. I believe some of those mines are still working.

As far as the actual boom, the ones that ended up with the money were the whores selling themselves to the miners and the shovel sellers...

There is plenty of money in selling to internet marketers but way more money out there to be had. I do admit it is more difficult than selling to internet marketers but those who never leave that zone don't know what they are missing.

I personally didn't start selling in the IM niche until I was already making a full time living in the other niches I'm in. I felt better that way knowing that I'm actually in the place that most of my IM customers want to be.

I like the shovel analogy, too. Because you know what makes the shovel work? LEVERAGE.

Makes for a good marketing lesson.

While there is money to be made from selling "shovels", IM encompasses so much more, and the smart marketers will sell products and services in other niches that are evergreen, and will be around for essentially forever.

There are other niches out there that completely dwarf what you are so narrowly defining as IM, and this is where the really big money is made. You're really limiting yourself by only selling shovels when you could be selling so much more to much bigger markets.
