File sharing sites, my email can not handle the big files etc.

1st up I dunno if this is the right place for my question.

I want people to send me photos so I can upload them to a site I might build them. As they will be computer illiterate (most likely) they will no doubt try to email me a stack of 20 photos that are 5mb each, email's are only good for about 10mb I think.

I am sure there are sites where people can upload there files, pictures movies etc that will allow me to get them that way instead of through the email.

What is there I can use. Something easy where they do not have to log in etc. So not like photo bucket. If they have to log in it will make the experience troublesome for them.

Or can I set up my own website where they can easily upload stuff without loggin in, or I give them a "secret" login and password etc.

I have a reseller account and WHM.

you can setup a website and allow them to upload, but then you will need to play with system configurations to allow large file uploads, so if you're not familiar with that, then it would be hard.

The easiest site I think is yousendit.com - no need to register, they just need to enter your email address..

Another similar great service that allows for up to 300Mb attachments (free version) is sendspace - Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way!

I personally use MediaFire myself. The user-interface is pretty simple and it allows you to make some neat folders to organize things properly. If I'm not mistaken, they allow you to upload files up to 200 or 300 megabytes in size.

+1 for mediafire. I've been using them for sometime now.

And the fact that they don't have waiting times or captchas makes them a nobrainer!

I have an account with media fire, about $9 a month. The downloads are slow and seem limited in speed. Would you all agree with this?

Is all you want a facility for each client to upload for you to process into a web you create for them?

You want them to register that is the minimum you need, not only does it show you who owns the photos but it keeps them confidential.

You can create your own facility on your own site, as soon as you use a 3rd party site you devalue your own.

You can install a photo gallery with open source solutions like Zenphoto.org or just install a Joomla on your site, it will take care of the registration and has facilities to do this the uploads and extensions to do more.

With Joomla you could create a contact who is the photo manager and then link all uploads to this virtual person so that they can be managed later.

I have been working on a few video projects recently and had to get a 700mb file. We tried heaps of different options in the end we went with Skype.

It might not be the fastest way but it is pretty basic and you are able to communicate with the client as they send it. This actually enabled me to have a good conversation with a client and now I have a number of her colleagues wanting me to do work with them.
