SEO question for worldwide search results

Hey all

I was just going through google webmaster tools and came across the feature where you can set your target audience. my site was not set at any and since my server is en Denmark I would Assume this will negatively affect my ranking in US searches?

This is a really big problem for me since I would like to offer my software to businesses in any country, that has a need for it.

Now looking through a blog post on nine by blue (SEO blog) i see that there is several ways of approaching this problem.
one way is to create a number of subdomains on my main .com and set each of these to different countries around the world. Each of these domains should then have a copy of the site with a bit of country specific information etc.
Now with a few hundred countries in the world you could imagine the scale of this prospect.

Anothe way is to purchase .uk .au .cz etc domains and again dublicate the site. same problem here.

How do you normally tackle this problem?

I am considering just creating subdomains for a few major english speaking countries and see if this has any effect.

Any thoughts/experiences of how to deal with this matter?
