What is the fastest Way to build a list?

There are many ways to build a list, however from a newbie's perspective, lets have a few warriors give their tips and advice about when they first started out building their list, what they found to be the most effective ways to build their list relatively quickly.

Offer something that a lot of people would want such as a free software product.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

It entirely depends on what YOU want to use and it also changes from people to people and squeeze page to squeeze page and also niche to niche.
The theme is more or less the same, give something people would want to opt in for.. But I think the challenge comes to actually get people to visit your site in the first place.

There are many clever and efficient ways to build a list. The common theme is offering something for free that people want. As far as newb friendly goes, a very easy way is to put together a free WSO. Look through the WSO section and see what is most popular, and put together a WSO on it. It'll cost you $20, but you are pretty much guaranteed to get a lot of traffic and sign ups.

To post WSO, it will cost you $40 and there's no guarantee, that you will succeed and make a lot of money, get a lot of traffic or even sign ups. Even if your WSO is one of the hot sub-niches. You need a good sales page (good copywriting skills), reputation (post count), quality of WSO, reviews. If you are missing most of them, then you are not going to succeed.

This is true, but you could put a lot more effort and money into making your own website that requires a good sales page, testimonials, quality etc. and get absolutely no traffic. Making a WSO is not free, but it is definitely easier and more likely to succeed for a newbie than doing everything else on your own without a stable platform that instantly builds trust and traffic for you.

The WSO answer is good because it focuses on traffic. You could have the best offer in the world, but if noone sees it, no one opts in. Spend as much time as possible driving traffic. Just one of many factors, but the hardest for me.

I am just starting out my first 'real' list and the way I have started to build my list is simple and outlined below.

I created a free report on something I know about (VERY important)
I then created a squeeze page including a quick ecover I knocked up
Currently I am offering the chance to reserve a copy of the report and recieve it 2 days before anyone else.
I am using Facebook, Twitter, Forums and my personal blog to traffic people to the squeeze page.

Thus far I have been having alot of success and this is currently spurring my on to start looking at other ways to drive traffic.

Watch this space for any updates

My favorite way to do it was to put up a free offer in the digital point forums with a link to my squeeze page and put up a free WSO. This worked out great for me and I got my first hundred subscribers within a day or two.

Well like all my other fellow warriors mentioned, you need to have a good FREE product that you are going to give away. I assume since you are on the list building stage you already know how to drive traffic? As that needs to be mastered firts before trying to build a list

Yeah, offering a valuable product for free would entice people to sign up with your list.
Products like, softwares, ebooks, instructional videos etc.. Something like other people has to pay for to get on other sources, but is offered for free at your site so long as you sign up for the list.

My favorite technique for building the list is using contests. contest not only get people to join your list, but they also get people to the share the contest and get more people to join your list. For instance, I had a contest to give away a hat that was only $45 I got over 400 people to join the list now do not have to do worthy any work whatsoever. I spent may be $40 and Facebook ads and that was it. And not only did i get 400 people on my e-mail list, I also got almost 200 people my Facebook page, a bunch of content written for me and a huge spike of traffic.

One of my favorite ways to build a list is using 100% instant commission offers.
It is usually much easier to get people to mail for these types of offers because they don't have to wait to get paid.

Make sure that you spend some time and find someone to help you get some initial conversion numbers.

The easier that you can make it for affiliates.. ie) premade emails and banners will also go a long way with potential jv partners.

This gets you a higher quality list, that has already purchased one of your products.

Assuming you already have your free ebook/video and your squeeze page set up you can also purchase solo ads from people with large lists and have them mail your promo. Make sure their list fits what you are offering and that they have a good reputation. If you do research you can see their reviews.

You can also do adswaps, both in the joint venture section of this forum as well as others. I also recommend going the WSO route, you will have to pay the posting fee but if you have a good offer you can get several subscribers over 2-3 days.

i use video and seems to work well. Give them a few tips and create curiosty. That way you will get teh optin.

But I would say, its not about building a list fast..its just about building a list. When I actually starting building some sort of a list online things pretty much snowballed. So stop putting it off...build that list and send people good quality info...it will change your business forever. I promise. The quicker you do it, the more money you will make.

One of my friends here in OZ makes about 2000 bucks a month and he only has about 800 people on his list. But when you see the emails he sends, people trust him and buy at the drop of a hat. Now that list is powerful. But shows you what is achievable.

Just focus on building that list.

Well, I'm sure everyone knows but JV is the number one to build the FASTEST way to build your list. But that can be hard. The next best thing is buying a solo ad. I've bought a few and got 300-500 optins per blast. Not bad, huh?

Hey guys, I love your comments so far.

The give away a free ebook, or software product is one of the more common and easier ways, but some as this is usually associated with an opt in form (ideally on a squeeze page) - is anyone able to enlighten people on how best to go about creating that squeeze page?

This thread is designed to hopefully help and guide the newbie's out there, who don't know how, (or why) to build a list, so it would be great if some of you were able and willing to provide some more nitty gritty details for your recommendations.

Thanks to all those who have (or will) contribute to this thread.

    Buy it.

A lot of people say "Give stuff away" - but this is the internet, many things are free, and free is pointless if people can't find it.

When I started in eCommerce, I went to all of my competitors and gave them a deal. Big and small, eBay sellers, little site owners, essentially if you sold something similar to mine, I wanted to buy your list. Many people were actually more than happy to sell you their list of contacts once they felt that you weren't going to rip people off or something, but building a small relationship was necessary. I did give out free products, but money was the most common interest among people who had big lists.

Then, I compiled my purchased list. I sent out a couple simple offers and e-mails to get people to opt in, and this gave me a responsive list. I even added a bunch of these people to facebook.

Within a week, I had a list of about 4,000 people that I paid probably $80 for. Sure, it isn't the hundreds of thousands people claim to have in their list, but after I gave out a couple coupons, I was good and my list grew and my sales greatly increased.

      Hi Faheeb
I'm fascinated at how you did that. (approached others in your industry and offered to buy their lists) Are you able to provide some more feeback on how you did that exactly?

I assume you didn't just buy it without some type of introduction from the list seller, or you'd simply be spamming-just because you paid for it doesn't mean it isn't spam to the people on it. Could you provide more details on how it worked?

eCommerce may work differently than say, a competitor selling a MMO product. Many eCommerce sellers don't value a list. They know its important in some way, but hardly ever do anything themselves to promote their new products to their past buyers. Some even forget they might have automated mail sent out promoting their products. If you go to someone and say "Hey, I'll give you a list of past buyers, I'll give you $50" - many will take it, as they see the money as free money and most believe that a buyer is unlikely to come back anyways.

Works great with eBay sellers. Of course, you have to teach them how to pull the list from their paypal records.

Its good creating a WSO or pay for solo ads if your in the IM niche for building a quick list, but if you are in the non-IM niche you may struggle to find ways. However I would recommend creating fan pages and pay $5 to fiverr for loads of invites. PPC is also another quick way of getting results but may need lots of trial and error before you create an ad that can convert well.

A solo ad is when you pay someone with a list to send your offer, usually free, to their list so that in turn you can get subscribers to your own list. Check out the JV forum.

Price will vary depending on size of their list and their typical response rate.

I have had huge success with solo ads. Do some testing though. For example, I found that shorter squeeze pages worked good for certain niches (i.e. a picture of the ebook, a brief overview of what is in it and an opt-in box).

In some of my other niches, a longer squeez page works better. You just have to be patient and test it.

One way that I didnt see mentioned was putting up an eBay classifed ad. Title it something like "FREE Report on How to Make the Best Widgets". Put up some information about the report with a "Click for More Details" button that links to your squeeze page. It will only cost you $9.95 for the month and you should get good traffic.

I think the fastest way is to get started. It might sound silly but even in the few days since you posted this thread you could have already got a squeeze page up and started your list building efforts. It isn't hard - really it isn't. It's all about taking the step and getting started.
