Where would you host 1 mailing list?

I want to build a mailing list for my custom shirt sites. They are all pretty closely related, and I would cross promote them anyway, so I was thinking I would really only need one mailing list.

I know GetResponse and Aweber are the best around, but they seem kind of overkill for what I need.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dennis Graves

Tried a few. Getresponse is absolute fave. E-marketeer is obviously pretty sweet, but probably even more "over the top" than those you mentioned.

Anyway...If something seems unneccesary now, that does not mean that you won´t need it in the future. And I would say that it is better to have it available, than having to change later.

After all, no one is forcing you to use all features

    I would work with PHPList...

If you really want a SAAS for this - use MailChimp - free up to 500

    I like GetResponse.

They're free, I believe, if you have a list of under 200 subscribers (I think) and are sending under a certain number of emails per month. After that, they're pretty cheap.

MailChimp is also free up to a point, so long as you're not engaging in affiliate marketing (which is prohibited under their terms of service).

The way I see it, if you feel it's worth investing your time and effort into creating and maintaining a mailing list, it's worth utilising a proper service, provided by a proper company.

Otherwise, if you choose to host it yourslf, deliverability rates and what not will be significantly lower, and you'll risk losing your hosting and what not too if you receive spam complaints. And, many hosts don't allow you to have self-hosted mailing lists anyway, because they're not "white-listed", and getting black-listed / blocked for any reason puts other customers with sites/email services on the same IP address (or IP range) at risk of bearing the effects of any "trouble" you cause.
