Blog or a full website

Hi,

I'm contemplating whether to start a new blog or a full blown website.

Under what circumstances will you start a blog or a full website?

Blog or my new FAV Drupal

Drupal is good if you want members to view hidden pages

Blogs are good for everything else, you can even make it
    a full blown static site.

I prefer blogs , specially wordpress , for so many reasons

      1. They are easy
      2. there are lots of plug-ins to improve its performance
      3. search engine likes blogs very much

So , I highly recommended you to use wordpress.

It should depend on the kind of project you are into.

Whether you are into information websites or business
    websites or something else.

You could integrate blogs into websites as well...

      Exactly.

If you are writing on a topic with the intention of updating it on a regular basis then Blog is the way to go, preferably wordpress. But beware of starting one for free on the wordpress website since you will find it very hard to transfer it eventually in case you want to. Find a relevant domain name and start your wordpress blog on the same since you never know it might expand to one of those selling for 15 Million

In case your intention is to generate affiliate sales then information/content websites is your best bet. For example, if your target is to promote clickbank products then its better to start a Product Review site with static pages.

    A blog!

Well, you can use blog software to manage your static pages too so even if you choose full-blown web site, you will be able to use blog software to manage your content.

For simple web sites, nowadays I am really into using some kind of content management. Drupal is great with a lot of flexibility and more features too. It is a real CMS.

We need more info in order to give you the best answer, at least I do.

What is the vision for your site?
What do you want it to be to your users?
What functionality do you want for the users?
What functionality do you want on the backend?

I've been using blog platforms lately but some of my sites require Joomla due to functionality, so it all depends on the content and functionality.

I use Wordpress now for everything, even clients that are building brochure sites. It's just so easy to modify, expand, and teach someone to update. Even non-techie people can grasp updating stuff in it, and my small business clients are extremely happy with using it. There's forum plugins, CMS plugins, I haven't found anything yet that I can't do with it.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Well, my intention is to have an information site. My guess is blog is more suitable, right?

But I also understand that I have to build a list. Can a blog do that? If I have a product to sell, can a blog do that as well?

I also use Wordpress for everything now - both static sites and blogs.

You could do both, have a blog and a static site in one - have static pages and then your blog posts also. The link in my sig is a mixture of both - has pages and posts

  • I always choose a blog, wordpress, as you can essentially make it a static site anyway. The only time that I am not using wordpress is for sales landing pages or squeeze pages before an affiliate offer.

Shezz - Nice site, is this performing well at all for you, lots of clickbank products in there and is a mix of direct linking and reviews. Are you PPC for the review aspects as well or just generic traffic?

It is only just new Ian so I don't have too much to report back yet. I have a ppc campaign running but have only selected very few keywords relating to the review themselves, so not a huge amount of traffic from them, but targeted at least.

I'm going to do some squidoo lenses back to it and a bit of article marketing and see how it goes.

Go with a wordpress blog first. Less hassle, easy to set-up and much quicker SEO optimzed than a full website.

Then, you can always upgrade your blog to a website if you want

A blog is no more a better way than a static website is a better way. The idea that one somehow will rank higher based on the platform is absolutely ridiculous.

As many of the warriors already said, it really depends on what type of website you are planning on making.
