Frustrated finding niche

Hi. ive been searching for awhile now trying to find a niche. I type keyword phrases into travis travis and google keyword tool. about how many searches a month does a keyword phrase need to have to be a "good" keyword phrase. Also do the other 25-30 keyword phrases need to have the same amount of searches too? Also a question about competition. If a keyword has 246,000 global monthly searches with low competion what does this mean? does this mean im going to rank well for this keyword? dont make sense to me. What about a keyword that has 480 global monthly searches with medium competition? Or a keyword with 9,900 searches with high competition? How well would it be to rank for this keywords? Thanks. I appreciate the help and any advice so much!

You have more questions than can possibly be answered in a thread. First, you should understand that keywords are not niches. What you are doing when you do keyword research is searching for keywords where you can get a high enough ranking to be competitive for that keyword. Understand that just because you can rank for a keyword, it does not necessarily mean that that particular keyword will drive buyers. So, you might want to ask yourself before you go through the time and effort of backlinking if the keyword is even worth it.

You use the words good and easy, but those are relative terms. It all comes down to how much work you can do and are willing to do to SEO your site.

My suggestion for you is to head over to the thirty day challenge and watch the videos they have on keyword research. They explain the basics. Bear in mind when watching the training that the focus of that training is to try to get your page ranked in a few short weeks, so they pick very easy to target, low competition keywords. If you are trying to make it in a market or if you feel you can afford to build links then you can bump those numbers up some.

The Thirty Day Challenge is free, too.

You are going about it backwards.

How do you know what keywords to assess for when you don't know the niche? It's a cart/buggy/horse thing.

Find a niche first. Something that:

      1) You are interested in (personal interest)
      2) People are interested in and looking for (consumer interest, demand)
      3) People will pay for in one form or another

Evaluate the competition (supply), that is, what is already available that will satisfy the demand.

Sure, keyword research should be done in concert with deciding on a niche. But not BEFORE even having an idea on a niche to begin with. Otherwise, how are you deciding on keywords to check out? Are you just thinking up stuff to keyword research? You might get lucky stabbing in the dark, but luck never helped me a whole lot.

Yes, keywords can help give you an idea for a niche, or steer you in a certain direction. But keyword tools are generally better suited for evaluating keywords' relationships to one another and to your niche concept as a whole, rather than how legitimate a niche itself is. DO NOT let numbers alone dictate what your niche is.

And now, questions about your questions:

How do you know if that keyword with 246K global monthly searches has low competition if you do not know what any of that means? How do you know if the competition is low? Depending on the keyword, 246K global searches might end up translating into 200K exact matches or it could be 25K. Then, the demand would change, as well. The question is too vague and general with too many variables.

Or the keyword with 9900 searches with high competition. I would ask the same questions. How do you know the competition is high? Same with the 480 global monthly searches and "medium competition" question.

Your questions show that you do not understand some of the basic issues related to keyword research. But, no problem! We all gotta start somewhere.

This forum will give you a good education about such things as keyword research, as well as looking for/deciding on a niche to begin with. Many threads do wonderful justice to this, so I wouldn't try to answer all that here.
