Should I be trying to beat Amazon & Google Shopping Results to Number 1 spot?

Hello fellow warriors. I'm a newbie and have spent the last 2 days researching keywords ready to jump into the fire, but i'm a little puzzled.

Every keyword that I have found brings up Amazon, Google Shopping results, Wikipedia, Product Manufacturer websites and other high page rank websites in the top 1-5 positions of Google's Page 1.
Amazon is the big problem, as my whole goal is to feed shoppers from my site into theirs. Even with less popular keywords, Amazon is usually there. What are the chances of shoppers deliberately overlooking Amazon, looking at my site and clicking back through to Amazon?

Now my question is: am I on the right track? should I spend time trying to make a site with great content and loads of backlinks that can beat Amazon and it's Page 1 friends? Or should I be avoiding trying to rank on such Page 1's like the plague and go for more niche keywords?

Thanks,
Bryan

Hey huntr77, I understand your "problem". If you can get an exact match keyword domain name, you can outrank amazon and other product sites. Furthermore it's ok if you rank right after Amazon, because most buyers want to read more about the product before buying it (so they visit other sites before buying).

    Regards,
    William

Thanks for the offer, but i'm already using Market Samurai and think I have a handle on how to assess competitiveness. It's just that Amazon rears it's ugly head on most keyword searches - although i'll be eternally gratefully to it when it sends me my first commission!

Thanks everyone for pointing out that I should be trying to beat Amazon, rather than avoid it.

I've read enough about backlinks, so feel confident there, although I understand it can be an arduous process.

Is it really necessary to take 3-4 months to build backlinks though?? I've not seen much about how fast you should 'drip feed' backlinks? what are people's thoughts on that? I was kind of hoping I try for a couple of backlinks a day for a month, or is that too fast?

Lets say you are trying to rank for snow blower reviews. If the competition isnt that bad you can rank quickly for it. A few weeks or a month should work but if you want the real money then you want to rank for "snow blower" on top of snow blower reviews which can take 3 to 4 months. Yes you can go faster, build links more aggresively but 3 to 4 months in my experience has been a good time frame.

        Cheers

I'm working on this with model numbers for some competitive electronics. There are the big 5 or 6 (we know who they are) the EMD and myself. Some days I'm ahead of the EMD. Site is about 1.5 months old. The big 5 have few backlinks, but I wonder if I could break into that old boys club. I don't want to waste time and effort on something that won't happen. I rarely see affiliate type sites in the top positions for electronics. In my position I'm lucky to see 10 clicks a day, when I know I'm getting around 100 impressions.

The answer to your question is yes.... You want to rank above googlebase and amazon, for geo searches you want to rank above google maps/places both of those ranking spots will give you the most traffic. At some point you want to weigh the time/cost benefit to make sure you are not spending a buck to make a penny. It may be best to capture 5 kws #3 rather than 1 #1 all depends on the niche, kw, cost to rank etc.

Huh, to save you time and disappointment...

I believe you should get some SEO Basics, e.g. how to create backlinks and stuff.

Yes you can outrank Google shopping and Amazon, wikipedia etc. I've done it many of times and that's where the real money is with this method.

Just educate yourself about SEO and start building back links slowly over time. Give it 3 to 4 months time frame. You probably will rank quicker than that but if you give yourself 3 to 4 months then you will stay focused and see it through.

It's not really that hard but it does require some effort.

        Cheers
