is there a way to tell a site's category?

for example, if I know an URL, is there a method to know whether it is a press release site? a forum? a blog? a ecommerce site? etc.

thanks

Not sure I understand the question. Sounds like you're asking whether there is a service or directory that categorizes URLs? Not that I know of.

Kinda curious what the benefit of that would be.

Look at the sublink? Usually the keywords contain within the link except for some site designed specifically for that purpose.

David, here's an almost sure-fire way to tell...

Put that URL in your browser's address bar and take a look. Unless there's a clue in the name (i.e., Warrior Forum), it will be hard to tell otherwise.

In the olden days of the last decade, you could get some idea from the TLD. .com meant commercial, .net was a network, .org was a charity or other non-profit, etc. Nowadays, your guess is as good as anyone's unless you visit the site.
