Sorry all if this has already been asked and is a silly question but I am trying to do some keyword research. I have found a niche I may be interested in 1,830,000 global monthly searches but how do i find out the competition?

Thank you for your help!

no worries Ive managed to figure it out! The competition is low. What is considered a good ratio i.e. monthly searches: competition?

about 1:1,000 I reckon. the other factor is the strength of your competition...

have you tried paid ads, that's often a good strategy to get started depending on yr niche.

Hi, well I have been trying to find a niche so that I can then ask someone to build me a website. Total newbie here!

I've found a keyword which has 1,830,000 global monthly search and 135,000 local monthly searches and the cpc is 0.27.

However, the item in question is very popular on ebay, amazon etc

I was just wondering if this was something worth going with?

You really need a tool to help you get more than one keyword for the niche. I suggest you try Google Insights and then buy a dedicated software tool to drill down a bit. You may also want to search for "long tail keywords" and understand these better.

Just a quick question - did you use broad or exact search? Be sure to use exact, since broad results are not accurate.

    Hey Kerry,

you definitely want to pay attention to
the monthly searches, how targeted the
keyword is, and how many people have
    optimized for it already..

Are you looking to get ranked on the top
of Google, or rather for PPC?
Because there are more things to pay
    attention to..

    Hope this helps,

    Gerald

Yes, Kerry you really need more data than just number of competing sites. You need something to measure the strength of each of those sites (PR, age, # backlinks, etc). Also, can your keyword be monetized? If you manage to find a massive search volume, low competition keyword there's probably a reason there's no competition.

Market Samurai is a great tool to see the competition, and I believe they still have a free trial.
