Are Opt-in Forms Really Necessary?

Hi all

No, it's not a trick question.

The reason I ask it is because unless I am losing my marbles Travis doesn't have an opt-in form of any sort on his magicofmakingup sales page.

Now Travis is someone I respect and I am wondering if someone like him doesn' have one, what does it mean. Is he just testing or has the intellichat agent he uses taken over the role in someway and is the conversions he is getting with that higher?

I would be interested to know others thoughts are because to me, an opt-in form is normally a good thing (can't think of a time when it's not) but if someone as experienced as Travis doesn't have one on a top selling clickbank site, why is that?

It depends on what you're trying to achieve.

I guess the reason so many people suggest an opt-in form is it gives you the opportunity to pitch your product at a later date.

On the other hand, an opt-in form can also distract the visitor from what you want them to focus on, i.e. the sales letter.

It's a delicate balance, and that's why you should split test to see what works best for you.

You could try a squeeze page with opt-in form, compared to straight to sales page, and pop-up on exit...

... lots of things to test.

Thanks for the feedback Paul. Yep I am a fan of testing testing testing myself, but I still can't get my head around the fact that unless you capture someone's details in someway then there is a good chance you will not see them again because they will forget your url or website name and type in something similar but end up at a competitors site and since there there just decide to buy from them.

However - thinking about it - I guess if you have a seriously desperate crowd then you probably just want them to do the sale and as you say, not get distracted with opt-in forms etc.

I have been so indoctrinated into opt-in forms; I really didn't consider any other alternative.

Each and every target page you do should have only ONE M.D.A(most desired action)

    It either squeezes or sells..

Squeeze page to squeeze the e-mail and name..,.... or sales page to point the sale..

    Peace

I just can't imagine a day when an opt-in form wouldn't be necessary on your leadpage. You have to have some kind of way to follow up with people who may potentially buy your products and services. If you don't then you are missing out on some money because most people don't buy the first time they visit your website to look at what is offered.

What I do (and teach to all my coaching students) is that grabbing the email is still the number one goal of most web pages unless you are trying to get them to order.

When it comes to getting them to "raise their hand" and express interest, it's still the most effective method for me online.

An RSS subscription still hasn't replaced it. The only other thing I can think that you might do is get the mailing address...and even then you should still be grabbing the email address.

I would recommend an opt-in form or squeeze page. Here is why. If you have a landing page that just offers a product or service and the prospect doesn't not buy at that moment. You are unable to followup with your prospects. You have a one shot message. Think about this for a moment. Nobody sells the prospect everytime that the prospect visits your landing page.

Not really- how many of those 4000 eventually bought from him, and how many sales did he lose from people who opted in but would have bought on the first visit if no opt in form was there?

Just getting people on a list means nothing unless you get them to buy at some point. It's like increasing traffic to a page that doesn't convert.

I haven't purchase the product, nor am I an affiliate, so this is just an educated guess...Only an affiliate or Travis can truly answer your question.

Perhaps he's capturing somewhere during the closing process of the sale.

I do agree with JayXtreme though on focusing your action on a sale OR a capture. You'll get the answer to that based on your intended audience. The Magic of Making Up audience is desperate for a solution now, so give it to them and let them pay you for it.

I think that Travis does a great job communicating with his list, and certainly benefits from being able to market to someone repeatedly. If they don't bite today, maybe they'll bite next tuesday...

I guess each to his own, but I just listened to a video that said the very best sales prospects are people whose "hair is on fire," meaning they have a serious problem and they are ready to do whatever or pay whatever it takes to correct that problem. If I am trying to solve a problem and want to solve it right now, and I come across a sales page that convinced me the seller has what I want, I want to buy now.

I can see the value of opt-in pages, but at the same time, it seems like a whole additional campaign to maintain a list and follow up with those leads. Not sure how effective it will be, but I'm going to try a straight sales page on an extremely needy market, and see where I get.

No, you don't NEED an opt-in form at all. But its wise to FOLLOW UP on your prospects or exisiting customers to benefit from a back-end offer.

Its good practice though to have an opt-in box SOMEWHERE.
