Anybody know of a way to get it cheaper?

It is worth the money I setup my blog using thesis you can have a look at an example of it in my signature I have got lots of positive feedback so if you have to pay full price its worth it.

    Steal it?

Unless you can find a coupon -- and to do that search google for Thesis Coupon -- you will need to pay the piper.

My understanding is that it is a great template, so pay the fee and go on to more important tasks.

I am only asking because a dickie bird told me there was a way to get it cheaper.

    ....

At 1/4 of the price, Genesis looks a better option.

Sort of like comparing a Skoda with a VW

If you're serious about pursing an internet based business you can't afford to cut corners.

Like tpw said, buy the tools you need and move on to the next task.

      True.

But the landscape is different from 1-2 years ago.

Genesis is a very viable alternative to Thesis.

Thesis is not particulalrly expensive, but when Genesis is so ridiculously cheap, why spend over the odds?

Yeah but sometimes you can get away with free tools as well. Just because a tool is free doesn't mean it's cutting corners. Some free tools rock and you never really need to buy anything.

As far as Thesis goes, it's a good WP template, but if you can't afford it right now, there are some good free templates you can start with.

It depends on what you need a wordpress theme to accomplish. Thesis and Genesis are different and each have their own strengths.

This is why it's difficult to suggest a theme when somebody asks. The right choice for one site might be terrible for another.

If I were looking to design a site with a magazine style layout, genesis with the appropriate child theme works out of the box. However, for a theme that has a stronger focus on internet marketing, thesis has more options. It you just want a basic blog layout there are a million free themes that will get the job done.

Picking a theme is like picking a car. They all have four wheel and go zoom zoom zoom but everything else is in the details.

Yes you are dead right Christopher.

Thesis is favoured because it converts....(amongst lots of other things).

I know there are other themes around, but thesis seems to be still no 1.

Genesis is a different creature, and probably will be a bit more slick in a few months time

There really isn't anything inherent about thesis that converts. That's really more marketing hype than anything else.

A lot of themes convert, free, premium or whatever.

Thesis has an affiliate program so you need to watch out for who is suggesting it and the link they give you. Chances are it's an affiliate link and they are promoting a product to get their commission. The same goes for all of the thesis theme review sites, affiliate links.

Flexsqueeze is another very popular theme for marketers.

I also want to point out that I had a brain fart in my previous post. I was thinking of Flexsqueeze and not Thesis when referring to a lot of the additional built in marketing goodies.

I know there are other themes around, but thesis seems to be still no 1
I dunno, last I heard genesis has sold over 30,000 licences and that doesn't include the number of people who are using the genesis framework illegally.

Genesis is a different creature, and probably will be a bit more slick in a few months time
Actually quite the opposite. Genesis is still maintained and updated but it and all of it's child themes are a couple of years old now. It's dated in both looks and features.

I don't think that any theme converts. Smart marketing converts.

You could put your best wiz bang theme in the hands of one hundred idiots, uneducated, or just ignorant marketers and they will not convert sales. On the other hand, a smart marketer can make sales regardless of what theme he is using.

really, it comes down to what you need.

Gensis has plenty of child themes, so you can make it simple and good to go.

Thesis is a bit more hard to setup but with its SEO functions, etc it is good. I just went ahead and purchased a developer license so I can use it on any project I need it for with no worries.

Remember that Thesis has excellent after-sales support and a user forum that is absolutely invaluable, especially if you are going to be setting up many sites with the same theme. There is a very big Thesis user community out there, and you can literally find the answer to just about any Thesis theme issue just by typing it into Google.

In addition to that, remember that the one-time purchase price you pay entitles you to future upgrades as and when they occur. If money is tight, perhaps you could buy the single site license for now, and then upgrade to the Developer license by paying the difference later on?

Don't be put off by the affiliate reviews, which are typically all trashy and irrelevant anyway. I personally know of at least 3 big SEO/offline gurus who use Thesis exclusively for their consulting websites as well as for setting up their high end clients' websites (cosmetic surgeons, exclusive art galleries, etc.)

If there is one thing everybody on this forum should already know...

review sites are for the webmasters wallet, not for people looking for honest reviews.

If it's a positive review and affiliate or cloaked links are involved, you already know the name of the game. Unfortunately the web is packed with such sites.

Christopher, it's not your "fault". It's the obsession that ignorant people have about using a converting theme... And then everybody gets caught in that trend.

But as Brian said it so nicely, no theme will do the marketing work for you, guys; so stop obsessing with themes!

Atahualpa has a lot in common with Thesis and it's free.

It's not quite as easy to click, click, click, customize as thesis, but once you get the hang of it, it's not hard by any means. If you do a search on youtube, you can find some tutorials that will get you up and running in no time. Atahualpa also has an awesome support forum too.

One guy even styled a Atahualpa Thesis look alike that you can get here.

I have heard a lot of good things about Atahualpa - it sounds like it'd be a decent free alternative to Thesis. Have not used it personally myself as I've grown to love Thesis, but it might be a good choice for people who are on a tight budget.

      Thanks for all your replies.

      I've never tried Socrates.

I've used Atahualpa, and its a very good theme.

What makes the sale - the theme or the marketer?
Do we have a sub-thread here?

I guess what I am inferring is that thesis allows
a marketer to coral his or her prospective buyer into the buying pen.

And its layout makes this easy.

That's the inference I have taken from what I have read.

Thesis isn't necessarily just good for that purpose. As I've noted above, I know of several big name SEO/consultant experts who use Thesis almost exclusively for their clients who aren't explicitly anything selling anything on their sites, such as high-end cosmetic surgeons and art galleries (no prices or shopping carts anywhere to be seen on these sites).

Thesis is well worth it. Not only does it look balanced and simple, it provides flexibility to personalize your site. It you really find it expensive, you can just go with the wp's free themes at the expense of the features that will make your life relatively easier. If you're really serious about making your website professional looking then thesis is a good investment.

I am a thesis affiliate and at the moment there is no coupon available to my knowledge. I read somewhere that they stopped every coupon from their end. Still you can find someone giving cash rebate if you purchase from their affiliate link (I don't know whether it is legal or not).

You can also go for Ultimate Blogging Theme. I am using it on my blog that you can view in my signature. You can also design this theme on your own or can use the ready-made design and options which I am using..

Thesis 'out of the box' isn't visually attractive. It's a plain text header, one content column, two sidebar columns and a rotating image holder.

It's what you do with it after you've made the mistake of purchasing it that can make it visually attractive.

Thesis is bloated, overcomplicated, trying to be-all to everyone. It's a nightmare to customize if you are not familiar with PHP. If you don't know the theme framework intimately, changing the behavior of something can be a hair-losing experience.

Oh man, don't get me started with those fake review sites (yeah, I know, half the members of this forum are doing them). This is a little OT but Google, say, 'Deadbeat Affiliate review' and then have a little think about why Tiffany Dow's initially NEGATIVE review of dba is top of the rankings! Now there's a crazy idea, start a blog where you actually objectively review products, even at the risk of losing affiliate sales!

It is forbidden (ooh!) for Thesis affiliates to offer any kind of cash-back or rebate. This rule was introduce some time ago. Offering a bonus is completely fine however.

Do a search for thesis theme on Google and you'll find such offers.

I myself have a bonus offer.

Thesis is a decent theme, one which does give you a fair level of control without needing code. But naturally there is a limit which only code will get you beyond. Genesis has a little less design flexibility out-the-box (before requiring code) but in time I'm sure it will catch up. Both Thesis and Genesis have child themes (or "skins") which you can add to completely change up the design of your site.

Anyway, don't spend too much time on choosing your theme! Whatever you go with, you'll experience some level of learning curve...for that reason I just stick to one theme so that I can build upon my own experience each and every time I build a new site.
