This is what I need. I will have something to download in the email. They click to download and then before they get their download, a new window opens to another site.

I have seen this before but Im not sure where I can get it.

Just to make sure I understand what you are saying:
    - you send me an email with a link in it to your download page: example.com/dl.html
    - I click on the link but instead of the promised download you want a popup in my face that takes me to another site
    - how will I get my download?

not exactly a popup but takes u to another website in new window. The download starts after small delay...

Sorry, that doesn't make sense. Are you sure you thought it over?

        So, once again:
        - you send an email with a link in it (of course, you have no idea in what kind of email client or webmail will I open it, right?)
        - when I click on the link, your plan is:
        a) it opens the download page
        b) it opens an another page in a different/new window
        c) the download will start after a delay

Let me tell you what is wrong with this whole setup:
        - a download can and will start (if it's a zip file) ONLY when I click the DL link on your download page
        - my browser is set up so that it will NEVER listen to your "open new window" command; it does what I tell it to do - which means it never opens a new window when every wannabe webmater wants to screw around with MY computer. (sorry, nothing personal)
        - ^^ based on my setup I will never see the download link because you redirect me somewhere else

Maybe I misunderstood what you want; maybe you cannot explain it clearly... but somwthing is wrong with that plan.

I currently get emails that do exactly this and it works wonderfully.
