    Hi Net,

REally depends on your level of expertise in programming etc. If you are a half decent coder/website builder, then try OScommerce (or one of its more modern derivatives) it is basically free and does integrate to paypal, but you have to do quite a bit of 'tweaking' to get the best out of it.

I have also used the other end of the spectrum, the host shopfront type of service where you pay a monthly fee, but just have to upload your products and descriptions. Easy to use, but comparatively expensive and limited re-design options.

The 'best' one is usually the one that works for you!

yeah, if you don't know much about programming, i would go the wordpress route. do a search for wp e-commerce plugin, then get a theme that works with it. should be way easier. good for seo too.

Here is a good list of 11 carts to check out. In no particular order. Choosing a shoppingcart is very important and you need to consider your long term business goals and needs. Once you choose a cart and start running a bunch of orders and clients through it - it becomes quite difficult to transfer your business to a new cart.

Proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance on this one.

You didn't mention Zencart which I believe is quite good and should be in your list.

From your list I've used 3dcart and I found it easy to integrate and easy to manage your stuff through it.

I liked E-junkie too. The only reason I didn't go with it in the end was because of the ongoing monthly payments. Everything else being equal, I usually like to go for something with a one-off charge where available, even though it usually means the initial outlay for the alternative is a lot more. Other than that, no problems.

Way back before I used WordPress for virtually everything, I had several osCommerce stores. It was how I cut my teeth on php (and probably pulled out a LOT of hair in the process ). I do think you have to be willing to dig into code quite a bit to get the best from osCommerce unless it's changed substantially in recent years. It's capable of quite a bit thanks to user created addons known as 'contributions', but you have to edit the code yourself in order to install them, and many of the user created 'readme' files that accompanied them weren't quite so dazzling.

Even where they were faultless it's so easy to make a mistake when you're a virgin php'er. One misplaced semi-colon or even unwittingly included whitespace and suddenly all you can offer for sale is an 'unexpected T_VARIABLE on line 38'. If E-Junkie had existed in those days I'd have been in there like a shot, regardless of the ongoing monthly payments.

I use 1shoppingcart and like it EXCEPT for the few outages they've had this year which lasted for a full day and we lost a lot of sales!

Otherwise I've also used Zencart. It was tough for me to learn since I'm not too technically savvy.

Also have used Shopify.com and HATED it A LOT.

Out of this world good product is Ecwid: Ecwid: E-Commerce Widgets

It has a free and a premium package, all optimized and does a ton of stuff. E-junkie does not come even close.

I'm using Ecwid on one of my sites, but am not happy with it, and is why I asked about alternatives.

Ecwid connects with the Ecwid server to function, and it is often very slow. I have noticed that if you use the sidebar widgets seems to make the situation worse. I have fiddled with it for 3-4 months now and am ready to try something more flexible and efficient. I liked Ecwid's simplicity and cost (free for the basics), but, IMO, the trade-off is too big and it is time for me to try something better.

I've been using (primarily) 1shoppingcart, and really like it.

it works, it's convenient to have everything together in one place, and it provides more flexibility in terms of email lists than Aweber, from allowing single opt-in to allowing you to move people from one list to another -- and back again -- if needed.

This is especially helpful when I have subscribers (for my subscription products) who cancel and then resubscribe...

You can also do some things that I haven't been able to do in Aweber, including programming messages a year (or more) in advance, so I can rerun certain series repeatedly a few months apart as I fill in other stuff for the intervening periods later.

Very helpful. And I can also re-age my subscribers.

Originally, I signed up for them because they were the only shoppingcart that allowed me to import subscribers I had gotten from a coregistration service. Turns out that this was probably not worth doing, but I'm glad it got me started with 1shoppingcart...

        One gripe!

They CHARGE you for phone support! They didn't originally, but introduced it about a year or so ago. The thing is that I need it so rarely that it's not worth paying the extra for it, which I suppose is good too -- their email support is pretty good, and overall 1shoppingcart is pretty easy to use.

OS Commerce is very difficult to install and use – and it’s very limiting. There’s not enough features to run an entire professional business. The same goes with ZenCart. Magento almost has it right, but it’s also very difficult to install and it’s slow.

Also, I have used Shopify, and this was a great start because everything is installed for you, and all you have to do is pay a simple monthly fee, however – it doesn’t have necessary features to run a successful business online such as a customer database and email marketing features.

You should look into a total online business platform such as Haiku Online Business which handles shopping cart, website, customer database and marketing features. It’s a hosted solution so you don’t have to worry about the technical stuff either. All the other bases are also integrated, such as the payment gateways, shipping modules etc., and you can even give your customers coupons and vouchers. It’s an all in one solution so you don’t need to juggle multiple systems.

You can check out Claim the Web Cart - It's a web labeled Pinnacle Cart but has a built in InfusionSoft Integration for E-mail marketing -

Imagine being able to send direct and targeted e-mail messages based on what a person purchases from your shopping cart?

We use the integration for our own ecommerce business and we've literally tripled our sales since using it. Absolutely amazing tool!

Yes, I would go with a private label oscommerce type cart (like CRE Loaded) if you are familiar with hosting settings, basic php, etc. Other decent options are x-cart, magento, and zencart (although they all have their own issues).

If you are completely unfamiliar with hosting, php/html, etc., you'll want to go with something that's easier to use like 1shoppingcart.

  • I was reading up on Premium Web Cart. I am not an affiliate. Hell, I don't even use it yet. It's a relatively new entrant but full of features that I don't see any other shopping cart has.

Things like ability to create physical variants off your digital goods, cross-selling, up-selling. It also allows you to have as many websites with the same shopping cart license.

It has other features like live chat,click-to-call, surveys, Advertising, affiliate system built-in, etc.

Basically all current popular solutions combined together.. .that are marketing themselves as "total all in one business Ecommere solution" ... has already been in Delavo 1 year ago.

Right now, Delavo version 2.9 is so far ahead of anything that's ever been invented - that you could combine every known eCommerce, CMS, Membership, Sales, Tracking, Followup, Optimization, API Integration, Affiliate Tracking, OTO, Dynamic Pricing, hundreds more... solution that's ever been created since Internet Marketing began... and it's still all a joke compared to Delavo... which keeps being updated nearly monthly for years.

Shameful how these "popular" ecommerce/cart solutions are diverting peoples attention from something that already exists with infinite times more flexibility, professionalism, and overall ability to get the job done with building a multi-million dollar business.

I've build a few shops, here's my experience so far.

I used zen cart for 3 shops and found it's a pain to customize. Especially the email creation is so weird that it's impossible to customize emails in a way that will work for html and text mails. In many ways zen cart is not up to date anymore.

Magento is a VERY big solution for people who have big projects. If you're just starting out and don't have good programming knowledge, a dedicated server or the money to pay a programmer...then better go for a simpler solution.

Right now I'm building my first shop with Prestashop and I'm impressed. It's light years ahead of the old dogs like zen cart or oscommerce.

Delavo is all-in-one business platform that has about 15 new added features per 35 days on average. Noone else does this.

Why should you care? Because it's fluid. You can bend, shape, change it's checkout/backend process in any way to suit your specific business model.

Others lock you into their "defaulted programmed/templated" structure so you always end up probably saying "Damn! I really need X but these guys don't have it".

    Delavo doesn't have this issue.

Delavo is very different from a typical shopping cart software.

It does many great things that you won't find in any shopping cart software and that are great for marketing with the specific style we IMers use.

For setting up a typical online store with many products displayed in a storefront, I believe a more traditional shopping cart software is better suited.

So the solution you chose depends on the type of selling you want to do.

For the typical IM-style sales letter with upsells and OTOs, autoresponer sign ups etc. etc. advanced tools like Delavo are great.

For an online storefront á la Amazon they will slow you down, as other solutions are better suited for that.

Here's my two cents on ZenCart. I've been using it for years. It's pretty good in general, but my biggest complaint is the shipping module.

The functionality is for the whole site, not by individual product. So this means that if you have two products from two different drop shippers, and one uses FedEx but the other uses UPS, there is no way to offer the customer the correct carrier based on the product. Well, other than to hire someone who knows PHP to edit the shipping module.

Setting up downloadable products is extremely kludgey.

And the customer is required to create an account--there isn't an easy way to bypass that part of it.

So if I found something better, I would switch.
