The first internet marketing I can think of is, POP-UPS, haha remember those?

Our goal as marketers is not to inconvenience our customers but provided them value, whether it is a product or a sharing a deal with them.

Keep that in mind, not just for ethics, but because if your providing value, it is a much more sustainable business model.

Well, the thing is, before javascripts and flash (and frames) became as advanced (and widely supported) as they are today, often launching ads and banners in a popup was the only real reliable way of making sure they'd be seen.

These days, there are more mediums through which one can ensure a better (even if not guaranteed) exposure rate of one's advertisements.

But you still see them, sometimes.

And they're still as friggin' irritating as they always were!

Oh and the magnificent, explosive, fantastic (annoyong) Pop-Unders? Those good old times where you could earn 1,000$ as an Amazon Affiliate bidding for teh keyword "Amazn" o "amazonn" before they noticed...

that's why it's so important to jump on something right when it comes out and becomes popular so you can exploit things like that. I think you have a good 3 months of something becoming popular to exploit little things.

Or you can build a solid income on a solid foundation, slowly over time. In my opinion slow and steady wins the race. That doesn't mean do not take up an opportunity when you see one, but if one wants to do this for a living they must think of their decisions in the long term.

As the saying goes, don't put all of your eggs in one basket--and that applies to your comment in my opinion.

I remember what I called the "Pop Up bomb" where it would open several different sites and prevent you from closing any of the pop ups. It was the beginning of browser hi-jacking fiasco I think.

Also I remember when banners were making their debut, static Vs. animated banners that was the big debate.

This was back when the only thing the search engines had to worry about was keyword stuffing and hiding keywords as the same color as the background.

IM today has sure changed a lot from back in the day!
