Does Anyone Make a Full Time Income Just from Building Lists?

I always hear that the money is in the list. So, I'm curious how many people use list building as their ONLY business model. And by using it as their only business model, I don't mean people who build blogs and add an optin box on the side. I'm talking about people who just build squeeze pages offering freebies, drive traffic to those squeeze pages, and promoting affiliate products to their lists.

How viable of a business strategy is this in you opinion?

At this point in time, and with the way our industry changes extensively from day to day...it makes VERY little sense for anyone to use list building as their only source of income.

Familiar with the phrase, "dont put all of your eggs in one basket"?

Then you've obviously never built a profitable list that has worked for you. It makes all the sense in the world to build a list and continue building it and offer products to it.

The truth is that it makes very little sense NOT to build a list EVEN if it's your only source of income. If you do just one thing, it should be to build a list.

Completely and totally irrelevant to what I was saying, and what the OP asked.

        Re-read.

Building a list is a very viable way to make money, and one of the most beneficial in many niches. It should NOT be the ONLY thing that you do....nor do I know many successful marketers that rely SOLELY on their list....or any ONE thing for that matter.

It's completely relevant...you make it sound like its a secondary thing to do in your first post (at least that's how I took it) when in reality it really should be your main thing to do and should be where you do put most of your effort and focus.

OP asked "How many of you use list building as your ONLY business model."

I responded that people should not have all their eggs in one basket. (Thus, try and do a few different things instead of having your entire income and life rely on one thing)

Not sure how that is even remotely difficult to understand, and how you construed that as meaning that I dont think building a list is a good thing.

I have some good responsive lists, but something doesn't sit right with me on building a list just to send offers to in order to sustain some kind of income. I use my lists as a part of my over all marketing plan.

It's just like anything else - the magic isn't the list itself but rather how you treat your list.

The biggest problem is that most subscribers only want the "ethical bribe" being offered. Most marketers, unfortunately, feel that they've been given carte blanche to blast every affiliate offer under the sun to your inbox on a daily basis as a result of your opt-in.

Building a list isn't difficult, but it doesn't guarantee anything either.

yes the money is in the list.

I have one big list I used for a launch, and it went quite well. But you have to realise i spent many hours giving pdf, video tips, tricks

Relize that the money is not in the list, but the relationship you build and the trust that list has with you.

I know one guy here in OZ, who has a small list of about 800, but he makes a full time income from that. Why? because people trust him. Anything he plugs they go mad at.

Then I know people who have 8000 lists and say listbuilding sucks as they are not making sales. But then you delve deeper and find out they are abusing that list, spamming them and not getting anyone to like them.

That is what list building is about.

Anytime I have treated my lists like gold, the respect me and reward me for that. So build up repore and respect, get them to trust you and you will be quite successful. yes it can be done, and not that much hard work. Just have to stick at it.

You will find that once your list gets bigger than 2000 or so, then you can email other marketers....and get more people by doing a JV or something.

List building is probably the most common, most used and number one effective technique for building a profitable business online.

Take Groupon - the world's fastest growing web company for example, who is currently in discussions of being purchased by Google.

    - Groupon makes 99% of it's revenue through their own lists...

If you're not yet building a list then your already one step behind everyone else.

Grab yourself an autoresponder like Aweber or GetResponse - use PPC or Article marketing and start growing your business online.

List building means keep targeted customers. It's a best independent way to promote products.

Whether you are a product developer or an affiliate, your list is not just there to pitch offers. If that's all you use it for then that list will shrink every time you send an email.

You should use your list to get to know your followers. That is the only way that you will truly understand what type of content and offers they want to receive from you.

I know people with lists of 25,000 that make less money each month than folks with lists of 2,500.

Sure, there is money in the list, but the real money is in the way you market. If you send copy and pasted reviews that were written by product creators, then there won't be much money in your list.

I'm with EBR on this one. To take it a step further, look at your list as partners in co-creation. Treat them right and interact with them. Find out their problems & work with them to help you create products that they really want to buy. When your list turns to friends and fans who feel connected with you and feel they had a hand in creating the products they buy from you they can become an evangelical like force spreading your message and bringing you new customers.

    I have two lists.

One is 21,000 and in a niche market.

I have another list of 400.

Guess which one I make more money from?

    The 400 list!

Why? Because I have a much better relationship with them.

If you base your business off of sending out offers to people, from my experience, you really come off as spammy and you will probably get unsubscribed, but on the other hand, if you offer them really good content, consistently, you can squeeze in a high converting affiliate offer 1-2 times a week without eventually coming off spammy.

It's viable if you have a steady flow of new leads coming in.

However, I'm in the camp that prefers to build relationships instead of churning your list. It's a better long term strategy IMO.
