What is the most effective keyword research strategy for article

Hi Guys,

Am currently vexed over the keyword research for my article.

Currently my strategy is to aim to have my quoted "keyword" in google having a search results of less than 5,000 and then use the google adwords-keyword tool to analyze on the demand of my keyword by looking on the monthly search volume for my keyword.

Is this a good strategy?

I have come across of another strategy which works on the competition/demand ratio.

For example, Lets say i am working on a keyword "how to stop dog barking ".

stop a barking dog has 14,800 monthly searches and the competition volume in google is 22,600 results Which makes it to have a ratio of 22,600/14,800=1.53.

Is this ratio thingy a good strategy to be used?

In comparison, which strategy is better in the long run?

Totally depends on your niche, it's an ok way to see your competition, the best way is to look at the top ten sites amount of backlinks and things.

I just choose an article and write for it though, i'm one of those "mass" over "quality" people.

I use the Google External Keyword Tool to get search volume info.

I categorize them in three groups, low-hanging fruit, mid-tree fruit, and top of the tree.

Then I see how many Adwords users are bidding on my target-range keywords.

If people are bidding on those terms in big numbers, I assume that the phrase could be profitable.

Then I look at backlinks for the #1, #5 and #10 placed search results, so that I can get an estimation of the competitiveness level on link building. I check those 3 web pages against Google link: and Yahoo link:

Google gives me an idea, but not much more. Yahoo gives me a closer-to-accurate estimation of the number of links that a particular web page might have.

Then I always target low-hanging first. Once those are secured, I move into mid-tree. Then when I have a strong showing across the first two, I aim for the top of the tree.

@OP: You may also want to look at article directories and look at the articles to find better niches. For example, look at my signature link for more detailed information (a strategy in itself) in the War Room right inside the Warrior Forum.

Your strategy makes sense - also consider looking at how other people view those keywords by seeing how many Adwords users are bidding on your keywords.. this can give you a good estimate of how your research compares to theirs.

      Good luck!
