Is America on Holidays?

Hey I am an Aussie and I'm aware that the US is currently doing Thanksiving.

Happy thanksgiving for you guys.

Does that mean that the US is on holidays for the next few days?

The reason I ask is that I have noticed a bit of dip in traffic across my sites and was wondering if the holidays would be the reason this has occurred ?

Let me know!

Robin

Robin, you're absolutely correct. Thanksgiving was yesterday (Thursday), and it will be a long holiday weekend for many, which usually means that the majority will be away from their computers and the internet during this period.

Yep ... Thanksgiving is a big travel holidays here. Families travel all over to get back to each other to have a big turkey dinner together. The holiday will last until Monday, unofficially, as many take from Thursday through Sunday for visiting family.

Yes, things are going to be slow anyway, so why not take a break from the computer and do something else for a change? I figure it's going to be frustrating for anyone trying to market during this holiday weekend, and it'd best to take a break.

I'm guessing that families don't all sit on the internet and purchase information products together as a family activity over this time?

Well, I think it was a poor choice on the part of the marketer to have set the deadline for product availability on the 27th.

I think the product creator is based in the UK and gave me a special 5 day discount promo to my list (special affiliate privileges!). I guess we both overlooked the holiday period

I am in the UK and dont know anything about Thanksgiving, but i got an email yesterday from someone on my list moaning that it was Thankgiving and i shouldnt be trying to sell stuff to him on his holiday.

But to be fair to non USA marketers you cant know the holidays of every person that is on your lists.

I know when it is a UK bank holiday i still get tons of pitches from USA marketers etc and that seems to be fine

I wouldn't worry about that. Obviously someone that's not smart enough to realize that if they didn't want email on the holiday, that they could just not check it.

There are some people out there who will take every opportunity they can to whine about the emails they receive from the lists that they willingly subscribed to. If they're really that bothersome, just don't read it at all, or unsubscribe from the list if they're really getting that hot and bothered!

From what I understand, the majority of Americans will be sat around try to digest large quantities of turkey for the next few days/maybe weeks.

lol. Well, not for weeks. They eat a large meal on Thanksgiving, then the day after, they go shopping to work off all those calories, take advantage of all the day after Thanksgiving sales, and get out of the house. They eat leftovers for a day or two and on Sunday everybody goes home and life resumes as usual.

Some may shop online, but more want to get out in the crowds and shop in local stores and make money online stuff is not generally on their shopping list. Christmas stuff is.

I was looking back over some figures today for this period over the past few years.

    Thursday - dead
    Friday - slow
    Saturday - slow
    Sunday - big sales

    Why?

No idea, but the last 3 years were all the same.

    Cheers,

    Neil

I guess we in the U.S. engage in some pretty stereotyped behavior. Eating, for example is really big ... combined with having fun, sometimes with family, partying with a crowd usually.

Thinking of the other dates this happens (... every year ...), I would say

Christmas eve from about 3 p.m. for 24 hours
New Years eve from about 8 p.m. for 24 hours
Fourth of July from about 9 p.m. for 6 hours

As far as I can tell, however, Super Bowl is the biggest holiday.

Good idea to let non-US IMers know when our big holidays are. One thing to know about Thanksgiving is that it's not on a specific date each year. It's always on the fourth Thursday in November.

We need to add two more holidays when people take off to see family and friends, start their summer vacation period, or just take it easy during the preceding weekends:

Memorial day (last Monday of May)
Labor day (first Monday of September)
